Juliana Areias & Co – Bahia of All Rhythms Concert feat. Quentin Thony

Fri 29 March – Juliana Areias & Co – Bahia of all rhythms Concert @ The Ellington Jazz Club – PERTH – 7pm  – SOLDOUT

After the success of her USA and Japan tours in 2018, Perth-based Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, is back at the Ellington Jazz Club. Juliana invites you on a musical voyage to Bahia, the “bay of all rhythms”. On this journey you will discover the origins of many of Brazil’s most significant musical movements: Samba, Bossa-Nova, and Tropicalia, as well as the Afro-Bahia fusions of Samba-de-Roda, Capoeira, Afoxe, Samba-Reggae and Carnaval.

In the late 90s Juliana Areias lived in Salvador, Bahia’s capital and also the first capital of Brazil. Salvador is the Brazil’s most African city, where colourful big drums are played in the streets and ladies still dress in the traditional African clothes made famous by the 1940s Hollywood star Carmen Miranda.

The Bahia of all rhythms concert will feature magic songs about the heavenly beach of Itapuan, (where Juliana used to live and started her singing career); mythic creatures such as Yemanja, the Afro-Brazilian Goddess of the Sea; African slave cultural contributions and the happiness of the Carnaval of Bahia. Juliana Areias will perform iconic bossa and afro-sambas composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Baden Powell and Ary Barroso – to delicious tunes from Bahian artists such as Joao Gilberto (creator of Bossa Nova), Dorival Caymmi, Assis Valente, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Carlinhos Brown, Olodum, A Cor do Som, Novos Baianos, Roberto Mendes, Jorge Portugal and Raul Seixas as well as a few originals from Juliana’s internationally-acclaimed Bossa Nova Baby album.

For this exceptionally colourful concert, Juliana Areias has assembled a very special line-up of musicians and special guests – showcasing the amazing talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth:

  • Paul Millard, – Australian Saxophonist, flautist (Leader of Straight Ahead Big Band);

  • Joshua de Silva – Australian/Srilankan guitarist and singer;

  • Arvis del Vedado – Cuban bassist and singer ( leader of De Cuba Son Band);

  • Filippe Rimis – Brazilian drummer

    And special guests:

  • Quentin Thony – Reunion Island singer (leader of Soukouss Internationale Band)

  • Rafael Medeiros – Brazilian percussionist

  • Ourico – Lee Coumbe – Australian percussionist and Capoeira teacher (leader of Cdo-Perth Capoeira Group)

Juliana Areias has performed on major stages internationally including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro.

Now it is your turn to feel spellbound by the Bossa Nova Baby, Juliana Areias.

– “The toast of the Perth Jazz Scene. The release of Bossa Nova Baby has elevated her above a mere covers singer or bossa specialist. The singer excels in an elegant co-composed duet (Belas Artes) with Australia’s finest Brazilian-oriented 7-string guitarist, Doug de Vries”.– The Australian – Tony Hillier

– “It’s bossa that plays soccer with Jazz – as it has since the 60’s – and scoring a goal. Bossa Nova Baby” is a welcome surprise of great Brazilian music, made far away.” –  O GLOBO– Brazil– Antonio
Carlos Miguel – Music critic  and judge member of the Latin Grammy Award.

– “The idea of mixing styles and cultures is reflected in Areias’ life and her music” – Daily Record, USA – Bill Nutt

Our Multiverse Tableau Vivant

“Magritte jumps into the sea
of Aphrodite, petite mort
Joan of Arc
kisses Da Vinci
tableaux vivant d’amour”

This is a translation from Portuguese of the last verse of the song “Belas Artes” ( Fine Arts) composed by Doug de Vries and Juliana Areias.  The song is dedicated to Juliana’s love,   Australian Cybernets Artist Geoffrey Drake-Brockman. It talks about how Juliana sees Geoffrey’s artwork creations and inspirations. It is also about their love story and things they love doing together such as creating tableau vivants.

Tableau Vivant  – Joan of Arc – Created by Geoffrey Drake-Brockman & Juliana Areias –  Perth, Western Australia, October 2018.

Tableau vivant for Halloween… Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc) was burned at the stake in 1431 for the heresy of talking directly with God and dressing and fighting as a man. Jeanne was one of thousands of people (mainly women) burned as witches in medieval times.

Tableau Vivant – Magritte Leap after Golconda by Rene Magritte, created by Geoffrey Drake-Brockman – Perth, Western Australia, March 2013.

WAMFest Canon Ball celebration of WA original music and gender diversity

Article published by Around The Sound

THE CANON BALL

WAMFest 2018 features a special event, as the team from the Canon Ball take over two stages at The Court Hotel.  In the lead up to the event, Around The Sound spoke to the originators of the Canon Ball, Addison Axe and Vanessa Thornton.

The first Canon Ball happened at Fremantle’s Buffalo Club on 10 March this year.  If asked, I would struggle to think of a gig that I’ve attended where the atmosphere was more welcoming, the sense of unity between bands and audience was greater and the smiles on people’s dials were bigger.  The Canon Ball was a salve for the wounds of a world weary of division — between genders, between cultures, between countries.  It was a uniting experience that left people wanting more.

The Canon Ball is happening again.  This time at WAMFest, over two stages at The Court Hotel on Saturday 3 November.  To let you know what to expect, Around The Sound spoke to Vanessa Thornton (Jebediah, Axe Girl, Tommyhwaks) and Addison Axe (Axe Girl, Tommyhawks), who founded the festival.

“The Canon Ball is an event put on by a collective of like-minded people reflecting all genders and identities.  It’s a celebration of female creativity, a carnival of the arts.  We welcome everyone,” says Thornton.

We’re really lucky that WAM (WA Music Industry Association) have let us run these stages for WAMFest, it’s great to have their support for this.  And The Court is a great venue, the performance spaces and the sound and lighting are just about the best in Perth.

“Yes!  That’s it!” adds Axe. “The Canon Ball puts on events where you can be just whoever you are, learn about other ways of being and have an awesome time while doing it.  We just want people to have a good time, you know, and to see what women can do in the music industry.  Not just the performers, but in all parts of the industry, staging, sound, lighting, security…everything it takes to put on a successful event.  And we want people to see it done in an ethical way, to be part of an event that tries to look after the environment as well as people.”

Thornton agrees, “That’s what we’re all about, having a good time, being good at what we do and doing good things.”

We’re all about goodness.”  Thornton says this last bit with her trademark wicked grin, while Axe just full on laughs.  They revel in their goodness, but they’re not aspiring to sainthood.  The Canon Ball is wicked fun.

“Yup, at the end of the day, we just want people to have fun,” Thornton adds.  “The bands at the Canon Ball, they’re not all women, but there’s at least 50 percent women in the bands, they’re female led.  It’s important to us to have that balance.  This isn’t about the gender divide, it’s about bringing people together and showing how the music industry really is.  There’s always been women in the industry, but we’ve been under represented a lot of the time, particularly on festival line ups.  I suppose, if we’re trying to put anything right, it’s showing that balance, and giving everyone a chance to see the awesome talent that women bring to music.”

“Yes!” Axe adds, “We want to run a festival that shows things how they really are.  That’s all.  We want to showcase all genders, all ways of being and the talent that people often miss out on, because there is still a bias towards males in music.  Not always, and things are changing, but there’s plenty still to be done.”

“And we want people so see the talent, to have a great time. Have we said that yet?” Thornton is smiling again and the partners in crime break into uproarious laughter.  They’re deadly serious, but they also get a giant kick out of what they’re doing with the Canon Ball.

WAMFest 2018 is a showcase of the massive talent that is the WA music industry.  Massive not only in numbers of artists and bands, but in the quality of original music that is generated across the state.  With free events taking place in regional areas as well as across Perth over 2 and 3 November, there’s a lot to take in.  We don’t really like to get all preachy here at Around The Sound, but WAMFest is one event you should take in.

Even it you don’t go to any other live music events this year, make some time for WAMFest.  You will be richly rewarded.

If you only get to one WAMFest event, and you really should go to more, make it the Canon Ball.  Having been to the first one back in March, we guarantee you’ll have a great time.  Here’s the line up:
Belle Harvey
FLOSSY
HUSSY
Intercontinental Sounds
Juliana Areias
Julie Kember
Legs Electric
Leopard Lake
Lucy Peach

Racoo

Check out the Canon Ball event page here and get more information on WAMFest 2018 here.

A bit more about the Canon Ball from the organisers
We chose the name The Canon Ball because we want people to have the opportunity to be exposed to artists that are the genuine article, at the peak of their creative powers.  That’s the canon part and, of course, ball, because we want everyone who comes to have the best time, to have a ball.

The Canon Ball showcases women from different cultures, ages and walks of life and welcomes all identities, and genders to join together to rejoice and revel in the arts and creativity.

In a time when the politics of gender have become confusing and excluding of some identities and orientations, we aim to showcase and celebrate the best of female creativity to the whole world.  Come one come all and join us in this celebration.

Juliana Areias, the Bossa Nova Baby declares her love for Rita Lee, the Queen of Rock.

Juliana Areias channels Rita Lee (Brazil’s Pop/Rock Queen)- Concert

Celebrating Rita Lee’s 70 birthday (31 Dec 2017) in Perth, Western Australia – the most isolated metropolis of the world

Irresistible, irreverent, witty, daring, fun, radiant, eclectic and romantic idealist – these are just few of the words used to describe the music and personality of Rita Lee, Brazil’s iconic tropical pop-rock singer/songwriter superstar. Rita Lee has sold more than 60 millions albums worldwide, has been performing for over 50 years and is turning 70 on the 31st of December 2017.

Juliana Areias invites you to celebrate Rita Lee’s music and discover Juliana’s own “psychedelic” side! Rita Lee was the daughter of American and Italian immigrants, and her music is the “most complete translation” of the cosmopolitan spectrum of Sao Paulo City – a mixture of Rock’ n Roll, Blues, Pop, Shuffle, Swing with Latin Rhythms such as Bolero, Samba and Bossa Nova.

Rita Lee, Queen of Rock, was Juliana’s very first musical influence.

The show will feature Juliana Areias (vocals), Marcus Tranjan (guitar) and Dana Ogle (percussion) performing songs from Rita Lee’s endless list of greatest hits, such as the infectuous Lança Perfume (Perfume Spray – Prince Charles’s declared favourite tune), Ovelha Negra (Black Sheep), Doce Vampiro (Sweet Vampire), Mania de Você (Mania of you), Mutante (Changeable), Nem Luxo, nem Lixo (Neither Luxury nor Rubbish), Esse tal de Rock in Roll (This certain Rock in Roll), Ando Meio Desligado (I have been a bit absent minded)… as well as her Beatles arrangements and collaborations with other iconic Brazilian composers and singers such as Cazuza – Perto do Fogo (Near the fire), Zelia Duncan and Maria Rita – Pagu (a witch who died in the inquisition), Ed Motta – Fora da Lei (Outlaw) , Paulo Coelho – Arrombou a Festa (Broke into the Party), Elis Regina – Alo Alo Marciano (Hello Mars Alien) and Joao Gilberto – Jou Jou Balangadã and Brasil com S (Jou Jou Bijoux / Brazil with S).

Rita Lee has been passionately singing about the beauty of women’s freedom of expression, sexuality, pleasure, desires and life aspirations for decades – well before Madonna hit the scene. From the time when Rita’s teenage band “Mutantes” participated in the Tropicalia revolutionary musical movement (1966); to her arrest by the Brazilian Military Dictatorship when she was pregnant of her first son (1976); to her life and musical marriage with Roberto de Carvalho, (who she still calls her boyfriend after over 40 years together), here we have a 70 year old super-artist and woman “full of life and grace and keen to make a lot of people happy with her music” – as her song “Saude” (Health) well-says.

Let’s celebrate Rita Lee’s extravagant music and enjoy ourselves on Saturday the 9th of December from 7pm at Geoffrey’s Studio (end of Government Rd – Nedlands).
