All That Samba YouTube Playlist – Keeping alive and searching for meaning

Hello beloved people around the planet… Since Mid March you have not heard much about music from me, but much more about my political journey … Thank you for caring, for listening… You know who you are…

Each one of us is coping the best (or worse) we can with these multiple global crises… Most of the time I have been feeling in fear, lost, depressed, worried, guilty, overwhelmed, drained, paralysed… finding very hard to be my “normal positive self”, with all tragedies around… searching for perspective, meaning in every view, every news, every day, every challenge… Dealing with survival, life threatening and death in the family and of friends.

Brazil’s out of control situation particularly has created even a serious identity crisis… Is the Brazil I represent with my art still current? This colourful country with friendly and talented people capable to face any challenge with creativity and joy? Or has Brazil become just a country of brutality and hypocrisy? How to keep singing the beauty of a country that is dying, is killing itself?

I have no answers yet, but I can see that I am not the only one feeling like this… And, ironically, this seams to be the only way I can feel some hope for Brazil, for humanity, for the planet, for the future, for my art…

Since I am not feeling strong, I am not yet capable to smile and produce “lives” as requested by some people I love … But I am finally very slowly uploading a playlist on my YouTube channel with live performances from my most recent All That Samba Tour around Australia and Singapore which we were lucky to be able to finish in mid March 2020… Only three months ago,but it feels like it was another life… There are about 15 news videos there and I will keep uploading more slowly… when I find energy to do so… I hope it can bring us some hope, light and joy…

Keep looking after yourselves and helping others anyway you can…

With love , Ju

Juliana Areias and Yamandu Costa

“After all the craziness of interrupting our work lives and the kids school routine by moving for months in the USA, with the loves of my life, my partner and my kids, to promote our artistic works there – and investing so much courage, energy, money, time, hard work and emotion – it is humbly gratifying to be among so many amazing artists at this award… Including the superstar prima-ballerina Ana Botafogo and opera singer Thiago Arancam, my dear Ivo de Carvalho and Yamandu Costa and my idol Antonio Adolfo (composer of “Pretty World/Sa Marina” as covered by Steve Wonder in 1971, by Ivete Sangalo in 2011 and many others). Congratulations to all the nominees and winners! To be alongside you is an enormous privilege… Thank you to the team at Focus Brasil Foundation and to all our old and new friends in the USA for opening your doors, your arms and your hearts, welcoming us so well… Thank you so much my beloved  Perth City and all who helped to give birth to this Bossa Nova Baby. Sao Paulo born Juliana was personally introduced to the Bossa Nova founders when she was a teenager by legendary Brazilian Music historian and journalist Ruy Castro who also nicknamed her “The Bossa Nova Baby”. This direct exposure and unique experience inspired her to become a professional singer and songwriter.

Juliana Areias left Brazil in 1996 and she has been living in Perth, Australia since 2007. Perth, the most isolated capital of the world, is where she has produced her first original album “Bossa Nova Baby” with the support of the Department of the Culture and the Art of Western Australia and a crowdfunding campaign. The Bossa Nova Baby album presents a dialogue between Bossa Nova and other music genres such as pop, jazz and tango – creating a contemporary Latin Jazz musical fusion which is taking the Australian and the International music scene by storm. It was praised by Roberto Menescal, one of the creator of Bossa Nova and it was also declared as the “new face of Australian Music” by ABC Radio National.  The twelve songs of the album talk about places, people, sounds and stories from Juliana’s wonderful current life in Perth as well as reminisce about her past in Brazil, Switzerland and New Zealand. The album features songs including Maré Cheia / Full Tide (a pop-funk tune about the Yemanjá – queen of the sea in Afro-Brazilian Mythology); Flecha / Arrow (a samba-jazz tribute to Rio de Janeiro City);  Garoto de Copacabana / Boy from Copacabana (a bossa tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim, composer of the iconic The Girl From Ipanema); Missão / Mission (a samba dedicated to the Samba de Gafieira Dance community in Perth); Belas Artes / Fine Artes (a choro about her love Geoffrey Drake-Brockman’s artworks and artistic inspirations in Perth).

After the success of her USA and Japan tours in 2018, Perth-based Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, is back at the Ellington Jazz Club. Juliana invites you on a musical voyage to Bahia, the “bay of all rhythms”. On this journey you will discover the origins of many of Brazil’s most significant musical movements: Samba, Bossa-Nova, and Tropicalia, as well as the Afro-Bahia fusions of Samba-de-Roda, Capoeira, Afoxe, Samba-Reggae and Carnaval.

In the late 90s Juliana Areias lived in Salvador, Bahia’s capital and also the first capital of Brazil. The Bahia of all rhythms concert will feature magic songs about the heavenly beach of Itapuan, (where Juliana used to live and started her singing career); mythic creatures such as Yemanja, the Afro-Brazilian Goddess of the Sea; African slave cultural contributions and the happiness of the Carnaval of Bahia. Juliana Areias will perform iconic bossa and afro-sambas composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Baden Powell and Ary Barroso – to delicious tunes from Bahian artists such as Joao Gilberto (creator of Bossa Nova), Dorival Caymmi, Assis Valente, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Carlinhos Brown, Olodum, A Cor do Som, Novos Baianos, Roberto Mendes, Jorge Portugal and Raul Seixas as well as a few originals from Juliana’s internationally-acclaimed Bossa Nova Baby album.

For this exceptionally colourful concert, Juliana Areias has assembled a very special line-up of musicians and special guests – showcasing the amazing talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth:

  • Paul Millard, – Australian Saxophonist, flautist (Leader of Straight Ahead Big Band);

Rita Lee has sold more than 60 millions albums worldwide, has been performing for over 50 years and is turning 70 on the 31st of December 2017.

Juliana Areias invites you to celebrate Rita Lee’s music and discover Juliana’s own “psychedelic” side! Rita Lee was the daughter of American and Italian immigrants, and her music is the “most complete translation” of the cosmopolitan spectrum of Sao Paulo City – a mixture of Rock’ n Roll, Blues, Pop, Shuffle, Swing with Latin Rhythms such as Bolero, Samba and Bossa Nova.

Rita Lee, Queen of Rock, was Juliana’s very first musical influence.

The show will feature Juliana Areias (vocals), Marcus Tranjan (guitar) and Dana Ogle (percussion) performing songs from Rita Lee’s endless list of greatest hits, such as the infectuous Lança Perfume (Perfume Spray – Prince Charles’s declared favourite tune), Ovelha Negra (Black Sheep), Doce Vampiro (Sweet Vampire), Mania de Você (Mania of you), Mutante (Changeable), Nem Luxo, nem Lixo (Neither Luxury nor Rubbish), Esse tal de Rock in Roll (This certain Rock in Roll), Ando Meio Desligado (I have been a bit absent minded)… as well as her Beatles arrangements and collaborations with other iconic Brazilian composers and singers such as Cazuza – Perto do Fogo (Near the fire), Zelia Duncan and Maria Rita – Pagu (a witch who died in the inquisition), Ed Motta – Fora da Lei (Outlaw) , Paulo Coelho – Arrombou a Festa (Broke into the Party), Elis Regina – Alo Alo Marciano (Hello Mars Alien) and Joao Gilberto – Jou Jou Balangadã and Brasil com S (Jou Jou Bijoux / Brazil with S).

Rita Lee has been passionately singing about the beauty of women’s freedom of expression, sexuality, pleasure, desires and life aspirations for decades – well before Madonna hit the scene. From the time when Rita’s teenage band “Mutantes” participated in the Tropicalia revolutionary musical movement (1966); to her arrest by the Brazilian Military Dictatorship when she was pregnant of her first son (1976); to her life and musical marriage with Roberto de Carvalho, (who she still calls her boyfriend after over 40 years together), here we have a 70 year old super-artist and woman “full of life and grace and keen to make a lot of people happy with her music” – as her song “Saude” (Health) well-says.

Let’s celebrate Rita Lee’s extravagant music and enjoy ourselves on Saturday the 9th of December from 7pm at Geoffrey’s Studio (end of Government Rd – Nedlands).

A show tribute to Graham Wood

A red rose on the piano. A special night at the Ellington Jazz Club. Bossa Nova Baby Show Tribute to Graham Wood’s life, talent and legacy. Thank you everyone for being part of it last night. With love from all of us.

This week on Wednesday 19th July,  Perth lost Graham Wood, great pianist, academic, co-owner of The Ellington Jazz Club and founder of The Perth International jazz Festival. My condolences to the family, Alex, the kids… May Graham be with his beautiful mother Stella and his father… May Graham always be with us through his music and all that he has created to make a difference.

Of course the show Juliana Areias – Bossa Nova Baby at the Ellington this Friday 21st, could not be a regular one, but also a tribute to Graham’s amazing legacy…

Without Graham, the Bossa Nova Baby album would not sound the same. Without Graham, there would be no Ellington Jazz Club, no Perth International Jazz Festival… It was even Graham who introduced me and recommended the talented young pianist Shai Martin who  performed and shared the Ellington stage with us this Friday… Without Graham all the pianists and jazz students from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) would not be the same… Jazz would not be the same, Perth and Australia would not be the same…

You never know how you feel about death until it strikes…

RIP, Graham… Eternal life to your music, creations and legacy… With love from all of us…

JAM no MAM
