Bossa Nova is more alive than ever with the voice and groove of Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias. Dubbed the ‘Bossa Nova Baby’, this Perth-based Brazilian singer-songwriter and multiple award finalist, brings a new edge to traditional Brazilian rhythms – creating a contemporary Latin Jazz musical fusion which is taking the Australian and the International music scene by storm.
Juliana Areias Concert features the original songs of her Bossa Nova Baby album as well as exclusive arrangements of bossa and samba hits such as “Mas que Nada”, “Water of March”and “The Girl from Ipanema”.
Juliana was personally introduced to the Bossa Nova founders when she was a teenager by legendary Brazilian Music historian and journalist Ruy Castro who also named her “The Bossa Nova Baby”. This direct learning and unique experience have inspired her to become a professional singer and songwriter.

The Oceano concert will feature songs about the seven seas, iconic beaches, mythic creatures and magic tales of Neptune, Poseidon, Yemanja, sirens, mermaids, pirates, fish-men, African slave ships and Atlantis’s mysteries.
Dive into a repertoire of alluring originals and irresistible covers; from bossa and jazz classics like “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Beyond the Sea” (“La Mer”); to a water-colour of rhythms by Brazilian artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Roberto Menescal, Djavan, Tim Maia, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Marisa Montes, Ceu, Maria Gadu, Lenine, Marina, Lulu Santos, Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo.
The concert will also reference UK artists who influenced Juliana Areias when she lived in Europe during the 90’s – David Byrne’s record with Caetano Veloso “Dreamworld – Red Hot” (1998) and Smoke City’s record “Underwater Love” (1997).

The Bossa Nova Baby concertfeatures the exuberant arrangements of the 12 original songs of the Bossa Nova Baby álbum produced in Perth, Western Australia – with the support of The Department of Culture and the Arts of Western Australian and of a successful crowd-funding campaign – as well as exclusive arrangements of Bossa Nova classics such as “Waters of March”, “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Rio”.
Juliana will be joined by a stellar line-up of jazz musicians based in Japan, including Australian saxophonist Andy Bevan and guitarrist Hirishi Nakanuma in Tokyo ; and Brazilian bassist Bete Bezerra quintet in Nagoya featuring Japanese instrumentalists Manabu Suzuki – sax and flute, Shinobu Wakayama – piano, Komori Atsushi-guitar, Naoto-Tanii – bass and Hideki Shibata – Drums.

The Ladies of Latin Jazz celebrate Perth’s vibrant musical melting pot with a picnic concert at UWA St. George’s College Quadrangle
Latin jazz chanteuses Brenda Lee and Juliana Areias will perform together with the cream of Western Australia’s jazz instrumentalists on Saturday, 3rd December. The event is supported by cultural sponsorship from the European Union.
PERTH, November, 2016 – They have come from different corners of the world to meet in Perth and share their love for Latin jazz and their common Portuguese cultural heritage. Brenda Lee grew up in Malacca and moved to Perth in her early teens. Brazilian singer Juliana Areias has been performing overseas for the past
twenty years and decided to call Perth home in 2007.
_ We were both invited by Fremantle musician Mike Burns to perform at the World Portuguese Music Festival “6 Continentes”. It was then that I first heard Brenda singing in Cristao Portuguese from Malacca and I was enchanted by her performance. – said Juliana Areias.
_ I’ve always loved bossa nova and thought that it would be great to perform with Juliana, the Bossa Nova Baby. We are excited to present this open-air, picnic style concert in the beautiful grounds of Perth’s oldest university college with the support of the European Union Centre for Global Affairs at Adelaide University as well. – said Brenda Lee.
The Ladies of Latin Jazz will present an evening of passion and elegance, celebrating timeless Latin jazz classics such as “ The Girl from Ipanema”, “Besame Mucho”, “La Vie en Rose” and “Autumn Leaves” – performed in English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese – from Brazil and from Malacca. The concert will also feature the legendary guitarist Ray Walker, saxophonist/flautist Paul Millard and drummer Chris Tarr. Together on stage they will invite the audiences to sway and immerse their senses in the enchanting and sultry rhythms of Latin Jazz – Samba, Bossa Nova, Bolero, Swing, Salsa and Montuno.
