After her “All That Samba” tour of Singapore and Australia, completed just before the epidemic lockdown, Perth’s own Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby” is glad to be back on stage to present her “True Live” Concert!

“True Live” will showcase the songs that inspired Juliana to keep her sanity, hope, and joy during the fearful pandemic period. She will pay tribute to the iconic Brazilian songwriter Aldir Blanc – who died of Covid -19 on May 4th. Aldir’s unforgettable sambas were co-composed and recorded by some of Brazil’s best artists such as Elis Regina, Joao Bosco, Guinga and Moacyr Luz.

The concert will also reflect on Juliana’s Brazilian-Australian-Kiwi-World Citizen identity and how we all can feel related to the Black Lives Matter movement through the joyful and powerful songs of Afro-Brazillian composers such as Gilberto Gil, Djavan, Milton Nascimento, Carlinhos Brown, Luiz Melodia, Ale Kali and Luedji Luna. Juliana, originally from Sao Paulo City, has always been passionate in exploring her European, African and Indigenous roots. Juliana will also touch on her connection with Bahia, the most African State of Brazil, where she lived prior to moving to Switzerland, New Zealand and Australia. Above all, this concert will celebrate the rich mixture of humanity, the joy of being alive, and the life-changing contributions made by music and musicians.

Her debut original album “Bossa Nova Baby” won “Best Brazilian Album” at the US Focus Brazil Awards in 2019 and spent five weeks in the US Jazz Top 100 . Juliana has been nominated five times for Western Australian Music Awards including Best World Music Act and Best Song. Bossa Nova is more alive then ever with the voice and groove of Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias. The ‘Bossa Nova Baby’ returns to The Ellington Jazz Club for her last concert of the year to close the celebrations of Bossa Nova’s 60^th Anniversary. Her Bossa ‘n Roll Concert will present the exciting origins and evolution of this rhythm that has inspired people to sway gently for 60 years.

The concert will embrace timeless Bossa classics – such as; The Girl from Ipanema, One note samba, Mas que nada, Waters of March, No More Blues (Chega de Saudade) – that were introduced to the English-speaking world by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao & Astrud Gilberto, Sergio Mendes, Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. The show will also feature irresistible Pop songs and fresh arrangements with the Bossa resonance reflecting upon artists such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Black Eyes Peas, Crowded House, The Police, Madonna, Sade, George Michael, Culture Club, Kate Perry, Bruno Mars, Al Jarreau, Diana Krall and Herbie Hancock.

In the country of Samba, even Brazilian Pop Rock Stars were influenced by Bossa Nova in the way they sang so smoothly and composed songs combing Rock ‘n Roll attitude with poetry, wit, and tropical waves. After enthralling audiences across the US and Japan, with her “Bossa Nova Baby” concerts in New York, California, Florida, New Jersey, Tokyo and Nagoya, Perth-based Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, is back at the Ellington Jazz Club, and invites you on a musical voyage, with her new show called “Oceano”.

The Oceano concert will feature songs about the seven seas, iconic beaches, mythic creatures and magic tales of Neptune, Poseidon, Yemanja, sirens, mermaids, pirates, fish-men, African slave ships and Atlantis’s mysteries.

Dive into a repertoire of alluring originals and irresistible covers; from bossa and jazz classics like “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Beyond the Sea” (“La Mer”); to a water-colour of rhythms by Brazilian artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Roberto Menescal, Djavan, Tim Maia, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Marisa Montes, Ceu, Maria Gadu, Lenine, Marina, Lulu Santos, Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo.

The concert will also reference UK artists who influenced Juliana Areias when she lived in Europe during the 90’s – David Byrne’s record with Caetano Veloso “Dreamworld – Red Hot” (1998) and Smoke City’s record “Underwater Love” (1997).

Brazilian Singer Juliana Areias presents a tribute to Djavan , recognized worldwide as one of Brazil’s greatest and most loved composers and musical stars.
