The concert will embrace timeless Jobim bossa classics – such as; The Girl from Ipanema, One note samba,  Corcovado, No more blues (Chega de Saudade), Waters of March (Aguas de Marco)  – which were introduced to the English Speaking world by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao & Astrud Gilberto, Sergio Mendes, Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock, and Al Jarreau, Esperanza Spalding; –  as well as other breathtaking Jobim compositions that may sound new for the audience.

“True Live” will showcase the songs that inspired Juliana to keep her sanity, hope, and joy during the fearful pandemic period. Juliana, originally from Sao Paulo City, has always been passionate in exploring her European, African and Indigenous roots. Juliana will also touch on her connection with Bahia, the most African State of Brazil, where she lived prior to moving to Switzerland, New Zealand and Australia.  Above all, this concert will celebrate the rich mixture of humanity, the joy of being alive, and the life-changing contributions made by music and musicians.

Juliana Areias, the Bossa Nova Baby declares her love for Rita Lee, the Queen of Rock.

Juliana Areias channels Rita Lee (Brazil’s Pop/Rock Queen)- Concert

Celebrating Rita Lee’s 70 birthday (31 Dec 2017) in Perth, Western Australia – the most isolated metropolis of the world

Irresistible, irreverent, witty, daring, fun, radiant, eclectic and romantic idealist – these are just few of the words used to describe the music and personality of Rita Lee, Brazil’s iconic tropical pop-rock singer/songwriter superstar. Rita Lee has sold more than 60 millions albums worldwide, has been performing for over 50 years and is turning 70 on the 31st of December 2017.

Juliana Areias invites you to celebrate Rita Lee’s music and discover Juliana’s own “psychedelic” side! Rita Lee was the daughter of American and Italian immigrants, and her music is the “most complete translation” of the cosmopolitan spectrum of Sao Paulo City – a mixture of Rock’ n Roll, Blues, Pop, Shuffle, Swing with Latin Rhythms such as Bolero, Samba and Bossa Nova.

Rita Lee, Queen of Rock, was Juliana’s very first musical influence.

The show will feature Juliana Areias (vocals), Marcus Tranjan (guitar) and Dana Ogle (percussion) performing songs from Rita Lee’s endless list of greatest hits, such as the infectuous Lança Perfume (Perfume Spray – Prince Charles’s declared favourite tune), Ovelha Negra (Black Sheep), Doce Vampiro (Sweet Vampire), Mania de Você (Mania of you), Mutante (Changeable), Nem Luxo, nem Lixo (Neither Luxury nor Rubbish), Esse tal de Rock in Roll (This certain Rock in Roll), Ando Meio Desligado (I have been a bit absent minded)… as well as her Beatles arrangements and collaborations with other iconic Brazilian composers and singers such as Cazuza – Perto do Fogo (Near the fire), Zelia Duncan and Maria Rita – Pagu (a witch who died in the inquisition), Ed Motta – Fora da Lei (Outlaw) , Paulo Coelho – Arrombou a Festa (Broke into the Party), Elis Regina – Alo Alo Marciano (Hello Mars Alien) and Joao Gilberto – Jou Jou Balangadã and Brasil com S (Jou Jou Bijoux / Brazil with S).

Rita Lee has been passionately singing about the beauty of women’s freedom of expression, sexuality, pleasure, desires and life aspirations for decades – well before Madonna hit the scene. From the time when Rita’s teenage band “Mutantes” participated in the Tropicalia revolutionary musical movement (1966); to her arrest by the Brazilian Military Dictatorship when she was pregnant of her first son (1976); to her life and musical marriage with Roberto de Carvalho, (who she still calls her boyfriend after over 40 years together), here we have a 70 year old super-artist and woman “full of life and grace and keen to make a lot of people happy with her music” – as her song “Saude” (Health) well-says.

Let’s celebrate Rita Lee’s extravagant music and enjoy ourselves on Saturday the 9th of December from 7pm at Geoffrey’s Studio (end of Government Rd – Nedlands).

A show tribute to Graham Wood

A red rose on the piano. A special night at the Ellington Jazz Club. Bossa Nova Baby Show Tribute to Graham Wood’s life, talent and legacy. Thank you everyone for being part of it last night. With love from all of us.

This week on Wednesday 19th July,  Perth lost Graham Wood, great pianist, academic, co-owner of The Ellington Jazz Club and founder of The Perth International jazz Festival. My condolences to the family, Alex, the kids… May Graham be with his beautiful mother Stella and his father… May Graham always be with us through his music and all that he has created to make a difference.

Of course the show Juliana Areias – Bossa Nova Baby at the Ellington this Friday 21st, could not be a regular one, but also a tribute to Graham’s amazing legacy…

Without Graham, the Bossa Nova Baby album would not sound the same. Without Graham, there would be no Ellington Jazz Club, no Perth International Jazz Festival… It was even Graham who introduced me and recommended the talented young pianist Shai Martin who  performed and shared the Ellington stage with us this Friday… Without Graham all the pianists and jazz students from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) would not be the same… Jazz would not be the same, Perth and Australia would not be the same…

You never know how you feel about death until it strikes…

RIP, Graham… Eternal life to your music, creations and legacy… With love from all of us…

Ginga Brazil Concert Review and what’s next.

The Ginga Brazil Concert at Kulcha, the Multicultural Arts Centre of Western, was a great success.

In a quartet format, Juliana Areias (voice), Glenn Rogers (guitar), Adam Springhetti (double bass) and Marcio Mendes (percussion) had the pleasure to perform to a great and attentive public of Brazilian Music lovers on the 23 July. Their sophisticated repertoire included songs by Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, Joao Bosco, Ivan Lins, Djavan, Joyce and Lenine; among others composers.

Their innovative arrangement for “Carinhoso” (by Pixinguinha) demonstrated how a melodic choro can also become a pulsing baiao.

The public cheered with excitement and enthusiasm the 3 original tunes of the concert: “Mare Cheia” (Johannes Dimyadi/ Juliana Areias); “Relaxa” (Adam Springhetti/Juliana Areias) and “Flecha de Oxossi” (Glenn Rogers/Juliana Areias) – where the genuineness of the cuica sound transported everyone to the mystical dimension of samba.

At the end of the concert, the public were still keen to listening to the performers’ music for much longer.  Many people have also inquired about CDs for sale. However it is not available yet, the next goal of the project is to record it. Therefore, keep your eyes and ears at www.julianaareias.com to be the first ones to know about it.

Seasoning the night, Brazilian Zest provided a delicious platter of typical Brazilian finger foods: pao de queijo ( Cheesebuddy), kibe, coxinha and risoles. (See the upcoming gigs page to find out about the new Brazilian Zest Jazz Club with Juliana Areias and guests starting from Fri 27 August).

“It was a stunning and magical night of Brazilians and Aussies creating music and celebrating cultural diversity together. A ruge thank to Kulcha  and  “gros merci”  to Bruno, ( Kulcha’s sound engineer of the night). Thank so much to all involved in this production (from musicians to sponsors), to all present in the concert and to all friends from near and far. Thank you for being part of it. Obrigadao!”. – says Juliana Areias.
