Hoist the colours high and set your imagination free. Perth’s own award winning Brazilian singer-songwriter – Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, invites you on a new musical voyage.

The Oceano concert will feature songs about the seven seas, iconic beaches, mythic creatures, lost treasures and magic tales of Neptune, Poseidon, Yemanja, sirens, mermaids, pirates, fish-men, African slave ships and Atlantis’s mysteries.

Dive into Brazil’s most evocative rhythms  – bossa, samba, baiao, afoxe, maracatu, and samba-jazz fusions – featuring fresh arrangement of classics such as “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Beyond the Sea” (“La Mer”) as well as alluring songs by iconic Brazilian artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Djavan, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Alceu Valença, Tim Maia, Maria Gadu, Marina, Lenine, Lulu Santos, Marisa Montes, Ceu, Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo.

The concert will also reference Christiane Anu’s iconic rendition of Warumpi Band’s Australian song “My Island Home” and UK artists who influenced Juliana Areias when she lived in Europe during the 90’s – David Byrne’s record with Caetano Veloso “Dreamworld – Red Hot” (1998) and Smoke City’s record “Underwater Love” (1997) – as well as Madonna’s 1989 hit “Cherish” which includes a line from 1966 “Cherish” by California band “The Association”.

Aboard with Juliana for this musical adventure are her captains of groove, showcasing the amazing young talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth: Joshua de Silva (guitar), Tommi Flamenco (bass), Francisco Javier Muñoz (drums) and Rafael Medeiros de Souza (percussion).

Juliana Areias has performed on major stages internationally including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro. After her “All That Samba” tour of Singapore and Australia, completed just before the epidemic lockdown,  Perth’s own Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby” is glad to be back on stage to present her “True Live” Concert!

“True Live” will showcase the songs that inspired Juliana to keep her sanity, hope, and joy during the fearful pandemic period. She will pay tribute to the iconic Brazilian songwriter Aldir Blanc – who died of Covid -19 on May 4th. Aldir’s unforgettable sambas were co-composed and recorded by some of Brazil’s best artists such as Elis Regina, Joao Bosco, Guinga and  Moacyr Luz.

The concert will also reflect on Juliana’s Brazilian-Australian-Kiwi-World Citizen identity and how we all can feel related to the Black Lives Matter movement through the joyful and powerful songs of Afro-Brazillian composers such as Gilberto Gil, Djavan, Milton Nascimento, Carlinhos Brown, Luiz Melodia, Ale Kali and Luedji Luna. Juliana, originally from Sao Paulo City, has always been passionate in exploring her European, African and Indigenous roots. Juliana will also touch on her connection with Bahia, the most African State of Brazil, where she lived prior to moving to Switzerland, New Zealand and Australia.  Above all, this concert will celebrate the rich mixture of humanity, the joy of being alive, and the life-changing contributions made by music and musicians.

Perth-based Brazilian singer Juliana Areias ends 2019 on a high note, with an open air free concert at The Fremantle Arts Center – Sunday Music on 29 December after being the finalist of Western Australian World Award Best World Music Act 2019 and her debut album ‘Bossa Nova Baby’ had charted at #70 on the US Jazz Top 100, following her win of ‘Best Brazilian Music Album’ at the US Focus Brazil Awards earlier this year.

‘Bossa Nova Baby’ was recorded and produced in Perth with the support of the Western Australian Department of Culture and the Arts, and features some of Australia’s finest musicians, including seven-string guitarist Doug De Vries, bassist, arranger and producer Pete Jeavons, many jazz lecturers from WAAPA, and the late pianist and Perth jazz scene luminary Graham Wood.

At the Fremantle Arts Centre she will present her original songs from her award-winning album as well as exclusive and exuberant arrangements of bossa, samba, forro, maracatu, Canaval Samba-Reggae classics – showing the full spectrum of Brazilian Music with its multiple colours, vibrant rhythms and magical fusions. Always surrounded by fabulous musicians, her show at the Fremantle Arts Centre will featured the grooviest cats is town: saxophonist Paul Millard ( leader of Straight Ahead Big Band); WAAPA guitarist Joshua de Silva, born in Sri Lanka, Cuban bassist Arvis Mena (leader of The Cuba Son band), drummer Bronton Ainsworth (menber of Beleza Samba School / Adam Hall’s Band) and Brazilian percussionists Rafael Medeiros de Souza and Lee Coumbe (Mestre Ourico from Capoeira Cordao de Ouro Perth).

Originally from São Paulo, Juliana has lived in Perth since 2007. Growing up in Brazil, Juliana was personally introduced to the Bossa Nova founders by legendary Brazilian Music historian and journalist Ruy Castro, and it was he who nicknamed her ‘Bossa Nova Baby’, which she would go on to use as her album title.

No stranger to international acclaim, Juliana Areias has performed around the world at iconic venues, jazz clubs and festivals such as the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Fukiagi Hall in Japan, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the Beco des Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro, but she still calls Perth home.

Before she goes touring the globe again, you can catch her at the Fremantle Arts Centre – Sunday Music on December 29. She confesses – “It has been a long time dream to perform at the Fremantle Arts Centre Sunday Music Series, one of my favourite places in WA! Bossa Nova is more alive then ever with the voice and groove of Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias. The ‘Bossa Nova Baby’ returns to The Ellington Jazz Club for her last concert of the year to close the celebrations of Bossa Nova’s 60th Anniversary. Her Bossa ‘n Roll Concert will present the exciting origins and evolution of this rhythm that has inspired people to sway gently for 60 years.

The concert will embrace timeless Bossa classics – such as; The Girl from Ipanema, One note samba, Mas que nada, Waters of March, No More Blues (Chega de Saudade) – that were introduced to the English-speaking world by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao & Astrud Gilberto, Sergio Mendes, Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. The show will also feature irresistible Pop songs and fresh arrangements with the Bossa resonance reflecting upon artists such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Black Eyes Peas, Crowded House, The Police, Madonna, Sade, George Michael, Culture Club, Kate Perry, Bruno Mars, Al Jarreau, Diana Krall and Herbie Hancock.

The concert will give you the opportunity to taste Bossa Nova-inspired songs composed by Brazilian contemporary Pop Rock artists such as Rita Lee (Brazil’s Queen of Rock), Cazuza (Brazil’s Poet of Rock), Lenine, Paralamas do Sucesso, Lobao, Djavan, Maria Gadu, Marisa Montes, Tribalistas, Lulu Santos, Guilherme Arante, Bebel Gilberto and Rosa Passos as well as a few Juliana Areias original compositions.

Juliana Areias will samba-rock the stage with some of the grooviest cats in town: Paul Millard (sax-flute), Joshua de Silva (seven string guitar), Joe Southwell (bass), Bronton Ainsworth (drums) and special guest Rafael Medeiros (Brazilian percussion).

Juliana Areias has performed on celebrated stages around the world including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand, the Fukiagi Hall in Japan and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro.
