PERTH SINGER CHARTS IN US JAZZ TOP 100

The Perth-based Brazilian singer Juliana Areias’ ‘Bossa Nova Baby’ album, which was recorded and produced in Perth, has charted at #70 in the US Jazz Top 100

Perth singer Juliana Areias was delighted to find out this week that her debut album ‘Bossa Nova Baby’ had charted at #70 on the US Jazz Top 100, following her win of ‘Best Brazilian Music Album’ at the US Focus Brazil Awards earlier this year.

Bossa Nova Baby’ was recorded and produced in Perth with the support of the Western Australian Department of Culture and the Arts, and features some of Australia’s finest musicians, including seven-string guitarist Doug De Vries, bassist, arranger and producer Pete Jeavons, many jazz lecturers from WAAPA, and the late pianist and Perth jazz scene luminary Graham Wood.

Originally from São Paulo, Juliana has lived in Perth since 2007. Growing up in Brazil, Juliana was personally introduced to the Bossa Nova founders by legendary Brazilian Music historian and journalist Ruy Castro, and it was he who nicknamed her ‘Bossa Nova Baby’, which she would go on to use as her album title.

No stranger to international acclaim, Juliana Areias has performed around the world at iconic venues, jazz clubs and festivals such as the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Fukiagi Hall in Japan, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the Beco des Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro, but she still calls Perth home.

When she isn’t touring the globe, Juliana performs regularly at Perth’s own iconic jazz club, The Ellington Jazz Club. You can catch her there on November 2 and at the Fremantle Arts Center on December 29.

After enthralling audiences across the USA, Japan and Europe, Juliana Areias, globally acclaimed as the “Bossa Nova Baby”, come to Sydney for one night only at Foundry 616.

Bossa Nova is more alive than ever with the voice and groove of Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias. Dubbed the ‘Bossa Nova Baby’, this Perth-based Brazilian singer-songwriter and multiple award finalist, brings a new edge to traditional Brazilian rhythms – creating a contemporary Latin Jazz musical fusion which is taking the Australian and the International music scene by storm.

Juliana Areias Concert features the original songs of her Bossa Nova Baby album as well as exclusive arrangements of bossa and samba hits such as “Mas que Nada”, “Water of March”and “The Girl from Ipanema”.

The Bossa Nova Baby is super excited to share the stage with this fantastic line up of Sydney based musicians: Pedro Licio, pianist Rodric White, saxophinst/flutist Glenn Henrich, bassit Stan Valacos drummer Andrew Dickeson and very special guests from Sydney Choro Club – flautist Sara Müller, accordionist Lukas Maio, seven string guitarist Pedro Licio, bassist George Machado and percussionist Douglas Aguiar (playing Brazil’s luxurious tambourine called pandeiro).

Juliana was personally introduced to the Bossa Nova founders when she was a teenager by legendary Brazilian Music historian and journalist Ruy Castro who also named her “The Bossa Nova Baby”. This direct learning and unique experience have inspired her to become a professional singer and songwriter.

Bossa Nova is more alive then ever with the voice and groove of Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias. The ‘Bossa Nova Baby’ returns to The Ellington Jazz Club for her last concert of the year to close the celebrations of Bossa Nova’s 60th Anniversary. Her Bossa ‘n Roll Concert will present the exciting origins and evolution of this rhythm that has inspired people to sway gently for 60 years.

The concert will embrace timeless Bossa classics – such as; The Girl from IpanemaOne note sambaMas que nada, Waters of MarchNo More Blues (Chega de Saudade) – that were introduced to the English-speaking world by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao & Astrud Gilberto, Sergio Mendes, Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. The show will also feature irresistible Pop songs and fresh arrangements with the Bossa resonance reflecting upon artists such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Black Eyes Peas, Crowded House, The Police, Madonna, Sade, George Michael, Culture Club, Kate Perry, Bruno Mars, Al Jarreau, Diana Krall and Herbie Hancock.

In the country of Samba, even Brazilian Pop Rock Stars were influenced by Bossa Nova in the way they sang so smoothly and composed songs combing Rock ‘n Roll attitude with poetry, wit, and tropical waves. The concert will give you the opportunity to taste Bossa Nova-inspired songs composed by Brazilian contemporary Pop Rock artists such as Rita Lee (Brazil’s Queen of Rock), Cazuza (Brazil’s Poet of Rock), Lenine, Paralamas do Sucesso, Lobao, Djavan, Maria Gadu, Marisa Montes, Tribalistas, Lulu Santos, Guilherme Arante, Bebel Gilberto and Rosa Passos as well as a few Juliana Areias original compositions.

After a brilliant USA Tour, with performances in New York, California, Florida and New Jersey; Perth-based Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, is back to salute 60 years of Bossa Nova at the Ellington Jazz Club.

The concert will feature exuberant arrangements of select originals and many of the most-loved Bossa Nova classics – including The Girl From Ipanema, Mas que Nada, and One Note Samba – revealing how Bossa Nova keeps evolving and enchanting the world.

Juliana will be joined by a stellar line-up of musicians and friends: Paul Millard – sax/flute, Ray Walker – guitar, Joe Southwell – bass and Brazilian drummer Fabio Macarrao.

Juliana Areias has performed on major stages internationally including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro.

As a teenager Juliana was personally introduced to the Bossa Nova founders by the iconic Brazilian music historian and journalist Ruy Castro – who also named her the “Bossa Nova Baby”. This direct contact with the Bossa masters inspired her to become a professional singer and songwriter.

Before moving to Australia, Juliana Areias began her music career in Europe and lectured in New Zealand, but it was her first original album “Bossa Nova Baby” produced in Perth that elevated her to the next level. Featured on Australia Day 2016, the CD received multiple music award nominations and earned regular air play around the world. Filled with original tunes, the CD is an infectious blend of bossa-nova with samba, jazz, pop, funk, choro, ballad, and tango rhythms.
