Why Brazilians celebrate “Valentine’s Day” on 12th of June – Dia dos Namorados

Do you know why Brazilians don’t celebrate “being in love” on “Valentine’s Day”?

While around the world love birds celebrate “Valentine’s Day” on 14th February, Brazilians celebrate it on St Antony’s Eve Day (12th June) as part of the traditional “ Festa Junina” – The Brazilian June Winter Folk Festival – where couples dance around bonfires.

In Brazil around St Valentine’s Day, (14th February) it’s summer and Carnaval time – not necessarily a time associated with fidelity and romantic love.

Curiously both saints are somehow connected with the idea of marriage.

St Valentine was beheaded in Rome for secretly marrying Roman Empire soldiers against the orders of the Emperor Claudius II the cruel, on 14th February 269 AC. Legend also has it that while in jail, St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine.”

St Antony was born in Portugal and died naturally in Padua in 13th June 1231 almost a millennium after St Valentine. He was considered a protector of lovers because he helped to finance marriages of pour families. In a time that fathers of girls were expected to pay to get their daughters married, St Antony helped them to find the funds for it.

If you love music, culture and stories, you are invited on a musical passage on the train of colours, precious gems, and songs from the Interior of Brazil. A blazing show to warm your winter and light a bonfire of the heart.

Juliana Areias – Beautiful Horizons – Festa do Interior Concert – ( Dia dos Namorados) – Sat 12 June 2021 – 7pm at The Ellington Jazz Club – Perth – Western Australia.

Our Multiverse Tableau Vivant

“Magritte jumps into the sea
of Aphrodite, petite mort
Joan of Arc
kisses Da Vinci
tableaux vivant d’amour”

This is a translation from Portuguese of the last verse of the song “Belas Artes” ( Fine Arts) composed by Doug de Vries and Juliana Areias.  The song is dedicated to Juliana’s love,   Australian Cybernets Artist Geoffrey Drake-Brockman. It talks about how Juliana sees Geoffrey’s artwork creations and inspirations. It is also about their love story and things they love doing together such as creating tableau vivants.

Tableau Vivant  – Joan of Arc – Created by Geoffrey Drake-Brockman & Juliana Areias –  Perth, Western Australia, October 2018.

Tableau vivant for Halloween… Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc) was burned at the stake in 1431 for the heresy of talking directly with God and dressing and fighting as a man. Jeanne was one of thousands of people (mainly women) burned as witches in medieval times.

Tableau Vivant – Frankenstein, created  by Geoffrey Drake-Brockman and Juliana Areias – Perth, Western Australia, October 2017.

Tableau Vivant – Magritte Leap after Golconda by Rene Magritte, created by Geoffrey Drake-Brockman – Perth, Western Australia, March 2013.

The Lovers – Magritte Kiss by Rene Magritte. Juliana Areias and Geoffrey Drake-Brockman at MoMa,  Museum of Modern Art, New York , USA, March 2018.

Frida Kahlo & Rene Magritte surreal presence in a burlesque night…

“Frida Kahlo e Rene Magritte “baixaram” surreal-sorrateiramente na noite burlesca…”

Full Lyrics in Portuguese with English translation of the song “Belas Artes” (Fine Arts) by Doug de Vries and Juliana Areias, dedicated to Geoffrey Drake-Brockman.

Let’s face it. Perth is great! It is time to celebrate it!

In between her USA and Japan tours, Juliana Areias is glad to be back home in Perth, Western Australia, celebrating the amazing original music and unique creative community of Perth.

“The greatest cultural lesson I have learned in America, was how much Americans embrace and celebrate their own culture and the arts, making ordinary life extraordinary. Let’s face it,  Perth has some of the best beaches of this planet, mesmerasing sky, trees, birds, friendly people, clean-safe-traffic free streets, a blessed life style and an amazing creative community exporting world class music, fine-art, films…  No more understatements, please. It is time we celebrate how lucky we are to be able to live and produce culture and arts here.  Perth is not just okay. Perth is great! Perth is wonderful! I love Perth! I am in love with Perth… I have always been… but now, even more than ever!I am so proud of calling Perth home and being part of this diverse and dynamic artistic scene. Let’s face the music and dance.”

In this spirit, after her “welcome back home” performances at the City of Perth’s Winter Festival (25/7) – Winter Sounds, celebrating the original music of Western Australia, produced by WAM ( Western Australia Music) and at the Ellington Jazz Club (28/7); Juliana Areias annouces her participation and support for the “Brazil V Australia Capoeira Fundraiser Gig”  at the Rosemount Hotel on Sunday 26th August 2018 featuring an ecletic line-up  from pop ballades, bossa, samba, capoeira to funk performers:

Renata Fantoches (4pm); Helen Townsend (4.45pm); Constanza Herrero (5.30pm); Belle Harvey & Band (6.15-6.45pm), Capoeira show (7-7.15pm);  Juliana Areias (7.30-8pm – with Joshua de Silva – guitar and Rafael Souza – pandeiro); Randa And The Soul Kingdom (8.15pm-9pm), Brazilian DJ (9-10pm).

“Perth’s great music scene gets together to support a genuine school dedicated to teach kids and adults the art of Capoeira, the Brazilian martial art which is more than a self defence fight, it is the expression of dance, music, culture and resistance created by our African slave ancestors which now is admired all around the world. My kids – now teenagers – were among the first children to learn Capoeira at this school and it is such a pleasure to see every year more people discovering and falling in love with it. Come this Sunday to experienceo a watercolour of sounds and how beautiful, fun and powerful Capoeira is. Facebook event : Brazil V Australia Capoeira Fundraiser Gig” – invites Juliana.

A show tribute to Graham Wood

A red rose on the piano. A special night at the Ellington Jazz Club. Bossa Nova Baby Show Tribute to Graham Wood’s life, talent and legacy. Thank you everyone for being part of it last night. With love from all of us.

This week on Wednesday 19th July,  Perth lost Graham Wood, great pianist, academic, co-owner of The Ellington Jazz Club and founder of The Perth International jazz Festival. My condolences to the family, Alex, the kids… May Graham be with his beautiful mother Stella and his father… May Graham always be with us through his music and all that he has created to make a difference.

Of course the show Juliana Areias – Bossa Nova Baby at the Ellington this Friday 21st, could not be a regular one, but also a tribute to Graham’s amazing legacy…

Without Graham, the Bossa Nova Baby album would not sound the same. Without Graham, there would be no Ellington Jazz Club, no Perth International Jazz Festival… It was even Graham who introduced me and recommended the talented young pianist Shai Martin who  performed and shared the Ellington stage with us this Friday… Without Graham all the pianists and jazz students from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) would not be the same… Jazz would not be the same, Perth and Australia would not be the same…

You never know how you feel about death until it strikes…

RIP, Graham… Eternal life to your music, creations and legacy… With love from all of us…
