After her “All That Samba” tour of Singapore and Australia, completed just before the epidemic lockdown,  Perth’s own Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby” is glad to be back on stage to present her “True Live” Concert!

“True Live” will showcase the songs that inspired Juliana to keep her sanity, hope, and joy during the fearful pandemic period. She will pay tribute to the iconic Brazilian songwriter Aldir Blanc – who died of Covid -19 on May 4th. Aldir’s unforgettable sambas were co-composed and recorded by some of Brazil’s best artists such as Elis Regina, Joao Bosco, Guinga and  Moacyr Luz.

The concert will also reflect on Juliana’s Brazilian-Australian-Kiwi-World Citizen identity and how we all can feel related to the Black Lives Matter movement through the joyful and powerful songs of Afro-Brazillian composers such as Gilberto Gil, Djavan, Milton Nascimento, Carlinhos Brown, Luiz Melodia, Ale Kali and Luedji Luna. Juliana, originally from Sao Paulo City, has always been passionate in exploring her European, African and Indigenous roots. Juliana will also touch on her connection with Bahia, the most African State of Brazil, where she lived prior to moving to Switzerland, New Zealand and Australia.  Above all, this concert will celebrate the rich mixture of humanity, the joy of being alive, and the life-changing contributions made by music and musicians.

Juliana Areias is looking forward to performing again with her band of dear friends and incredible musicians – showcasing the amazing talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth: Paul Millard – sax/flute, Joshua de Silva – guitar, Tommi Flamenco – bass, Bronton Ainsworth – drums and special guests: percussionists Rafael Medeiro de Souza and Lee Coumbe along with samba de gafieira and forro dance teachers Ana Lucia Pereira Silva and Sarah Quinn – co-founders of “Let The Dance Speak”

Juliana Areias is an award-winning Brazilian Singer-Songwriter. Her debut original album “Bossa Nova Baby” won “Best Brazilian Album” at the US Focus Brazil Awards in 2019 and spent five weeks in the US Jazz Top 100 . Juliana has been nominated five times for Western Australian Music Awards including Best World Music Act and Best Song. Perth-based Brazilian singer Juliana Areias ends 2019 on a high note, with an open air free concert at The Fremantle Arts Center – Sunday Music on 29 December after being the finalist of Western Australian World Award Best World Music Act 2019 and her debut album ‘Bossa Nova Baby’ had charted at #70 on the US Jazz Top 100, following her win of ‘Best Brazilian Music Album’ at the US Focus Brazil Awards earlier this year.

‘Bossa Nova Baby’ was recorded and produced in Perth with the support of the Western Australian Department of Culture and the Arts, and features some of Australia’s finest musicians, including seven-string guitarist Doug De Vries, bassist, arranger and producer Pete Jeavons, many jazz lecturers from WAAPA, and the late pianist and Perth jazz scene luminary Graham Wood.

At the Fremantle Arts Centre she will present her original songs from her award-winning album as well as exclusive and exuberant arrangements of bossa, samba, forro, maracatu, Canaval Samba-Reggae classics – showing the full spectrum of Brazilian Music with its multiple colours, vibrant rhythms and magical fusions. Always surrounded by fabulous musicians, her show at the Fremantle Arts Centre will featured the grooviest cats is town: saxophonist Paul Millard ( leader of Straight Ahead Big Band); WAAPA guitarist Joshua de Silva, born in Sri Lanka, Cuban bassist Arvis Mena (leader of The Cuba Son band), drummer Bronton Ainsworth (menber of Beleza Samba School / Adam Hall’s Band) and Brazilian percussionists Rafael Medeiros de Souza and Lee Coumbe (Mestre Ourico from Capoeira Cordao de Ouro Perth).

Originally from São Paulo, Juliana has lived in Perth since 2007. Growing up in Brazil, Juliana was personally introduced to the Bossa Nova founders by legendary Brazilian Music historian and journalist Ruy Castro, and it was he who nicknamed her ‘Bossa Nova Baby’, which she would go on to use as her album title.

No stranger to international acclaim, Juliana Areias has performed around the world at iconic venues, jazz clubs and festivals such as the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Fukiagi Hall in Japan, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the Beco des Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro, but she still calls Perth home.

Before she goes touring the globe again, you can catch her at the Fremantle Arts Centre – Sunday Music on December 29. She confesses – “It has been a long time dream to perform at the Fremantle Arts Centre Sunday Music Series, one of my favourite places in WA! Hoist the colours high and set your imagination free. Perth’s own Brazilian singer-songwriter and recent winner of the USA Focus Brasil Music Award – Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, invites you on a musical voyage to the tropical waters of her “Oceanos” Concert.

Dive into the seven oceans of songs about iconic beaches, mythic creatures, lost treasures and magic tales of Neptune, Poseidon, Yemanja, sirens, mermaids, mermen, albatrosses, pirates, fish-men, African slave ships and Atlantis’s mysteries.

This alluring concert will embrace some of Brazil’s most evocative rhythms and fusions – bossa, samba, baiao, afoxe, maracatu, samba-jazz, samba-funk, samba-rock, samba-reggae – featuring many celebrated composers and interpreters as well as few songs from Juliana Areias’s award-winning album “Bossa Nova Baby”. Juliana invites you on a musical passage on the train of colours, precious gems, and songs from the Interior of Brazil. On this journey you’ll discover the beautiful horizons and sounds from the diverse inland of Brazil: its baroque mining cities in Minas Gerais State; the broad farmlands of Southern Brazil, rainforests of Pantanal, modern architecture in the capital Brasilia, the tropical expanse of the Amazon, and the folk bonfire festivals from the north-eastern dry areas where the rhythm of Baiao and the popular Quadrilha and Forro dance originate.

After the success of her USA and Japan tours in 2018, Perth-based Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, is back at the Ellington Jazz Club. Juliana invites you on a musical voyage to Bahia, the “bay of all rhythms”. On this journey you will discover the origins of many of Brazil’s most significant musical movements: Samba, Bossa-Nova, and Tropicalia, as well as the Afro-Bahia fusions of Samba-de-Roda, Capoeira, Afoxe, Samba-Reggae and Carnaval.

In the late 90s Juliana Areias lived in Salvador, Bahia’s capital and also the first capital of Brazil. Salvador is the Brazil’s most African city, where colourful big drums are played in the streets and ladies still dress in the traditional African clothes made famous by the 1940s Hollywood star Carmen Miranda.

The Bahia of all rhythms concert will feature magic songs about the heavenly beach of Itapuan, (where Juliana used to live and started her singing career); mythic creatures such as Yemanja, the Afro-Brazilian Goddess of the Sea; African slave cultural contributions and the happiness of the Carnaval of Bahia. Juliana Areias will perform iconic bossa and afro-sambas composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Baden Powell and Ary Barroso – to delicious tunes from Bahian artists such as Joao Gilberto (creator of Bossa Nova), Dorival Caymmi, Assis Valente, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Carlinhos Brown, Olodum, A Cor do Som, Novos Baianos, Roberto Mendes, Jorge Portugal and Raul Seixas as well as a few originals from Juliana’s internationally-acclaimed Bossa Nova Baby album.

After the craziness of living four months in the USA with the loves of my life, my partner and kids, to promote our artistic works there; investing so much courage, energy, money, time, hard work and emotion – it is humbly gratifying to be nominated among so many amazing artists… including many of our new incredibly talented friends and also one of my idols – Grammy & Latin Grammy finalist Antonio Adolfo (composer of “Sa Marina” and many other Brazilian iconic songs). Congratulation to all nominees! To be nominated alongside you is an enormous privilege… Thank you to the Focus Brasil Foundation team for all the opportunities and to all our old and new friends in the USA for opening the doors, your arms and your hearts, welcoming us so well…

Our Multiverse Tableau Vivant

This is a translation from Portuguese of the last verse of the song “Belas Artes” ( Fine Arts) composed by Doug de Vries and Juliana Areias.  The song is dedicated to Juliana’s love,   Australian Cybernets Artist Geoffrey Drake-Brockman. It talks about how Juliana sees Geoffrey’s artwork creations and inspirations. It is also about their love story and things they love doing together such as creating tableau vivants.

Tableau vivant for Halloween… Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc) was burned at the stake in 1431 for the heresy of talking directly with God and dressing and fighting as a man. Jeanne was one of thousands of people (mainly women) burned as witches in medieval times.
