Perth’s own Brazilian singer-songwriter and recent winner of the USA Focus Brasil Music Award  – Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby” – is back at the Ellington Jazz Club with a blazing new show to warm your winter and light a bonfire of the heart. Juliana invites you on a musical passage on the train of colours, precious gems, and songs from the Interior of Brazil. On this journey you’ll discover the beautiful horizons and sounds from the diverse inland of Brazil: its baroque mining cities in Minas Gerais State; the broad farmlands of Southern Brazil, rainforests of Pantanal, modern architecture in the capital Brasilia, the tropical expanse of the Amazon, and the folk bonfire festivals from the north-eastern dry areas where the rhythm of Baiao and the popular Quadrilha and Forro dance originate.

This eclectic concert will embrace some of South America’s most evocative rhythms – samba, baiao, carimbo, maracatu, guarania, folkpop –  spanning traditional and contemporary composers and interpreters such as: Antonio Carlos Jobim (bossa-nova and beyond), Ary Barroso (composer of Brazil), Luiz Gonzaga (the king of Baiao), Joao Bosco,  Djavan, Lenine, Joao Donato, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, Beto Guedes, Lo Borges, Fatima Guedes, Flavio Venturini, Roupa Nova, 14 Bis, Maria Rita,  Maria Gadu, Diana Pequeno, Gal Costa, Toninho Horta, Wagner Tiso, Ronaldo Bastos, Fernando Brant, Dorival Caymmy,… as well as few songs from Juliana Areias’s award-winning album “Bossa Nova Baby”.


For this exceptionally colourful concert, Juliana Areias has assembled a scorching line-up of sensational musicians and special guests – showcasing the amazing talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth.  Juliana Areias is honoured to share the stage with:

– Joshua de Silva – Australian/Srilankan guitarist and singer;

Florida USA – Tribute to 60 years of Bossa Nova – Focus Brasil 2018 Florida

Three nations unite – the USA, Australia and Brazil – to celebrate the music of Perth-based Brazilian singer/songwriter Juliana Areias. Her album “Bossa Nova Baby” is winner of Best Brazilian Music Album released in the U.S. at the Focus Brasil Awards in Florida.

Juliana Areias has just been announced as winner of Focus Brasil Awards in Florida 2019, receiving the award of Best Brazilian Music Album released in the U.S., for her first original album “Bossa Nova Baby”. The album was produced in Perth, Western Australia with the support of the Department of the Culture and the Arts (now called Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries – DLGSC). DLGSC is also supporting Juliana Areias to travel to receive the award and perform at the Focus Brasil Red Carpet Gala Ceremony at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, in Florida on Saturday 11 May 2019. Back in Perth, she will celebrate at her next show at the Ellington Jazz Club, her favourite Australian Jazz venue, on Friday the 24th of May.

In 2018, Juliana Areias, along with her partner Cybernetics Artist Geoffrey Drake-Brockman and her kids Jobim and Lilas, embarked on the adventure of living in Manhattan for several months to promote their artistic works. Juliana Areias performed and promoted her Bossa Nova Baby album in New York, California, Florida, New Jersey and Washington DC.

Sao Paulo born Juliana was personally introduced to the Bossa Nova founders when she was a teenager by legendary Brazilian Music historian and journalist Ruy Castro who also nicknamed her “The Bossa Nova Baby”. This direct exposure and unique experience inspired her to become a professional singer and songwriter.

Juliana Areias left Brazil in 1996 and she has been living in Perth, Australia since 2007. Perth, the most isolated capital of the world, is where she has produced her first original album “Bossa Nova Baby” with the support of the Department of the Culture and the Art of Western Australia and a crowdfunding campaign. The album features some of the best Australian Jazz musicians including seven-string guitarist Doug De Vries and many Jazz lecturers from WAAPA – the best Jazz University in Australia located in Perth, including bassist, arranger and producer Pete Jeavons and the late pianist Graham Wood.

The Bossa Nova Baby album presents a dialogue between Bossa Nova and other music genres such as pop, jazz and tango – creating a contemporary Latin Jazz musical fusion which is taking the Australian and the International music scene by storm. It was praised by Roberto Menescal, one of the creator of Bossa Nova and it was also declared as the “new face of Australian Music” by ABC Radio National.  The twelve songs of the album talk about places, people, sounds and stories from Juliana’s wonderful current life in Perth as well as reminisce about her past in Brazil, Switzerland and New Zealand. The album features songs including Maré Cheia / Full Tide (a pop-funk tune about the Yemanjá – queen of the sea in Afro-Brazilian Mythology); Flecha / Arrow (a samba-jazz tribute to Rio de Janeiro City);  Garoto de Copacabana / Boy from Copacabana (a bossa tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim, composer of the iconic The Girl From Ipanema); Missão / Mission (a samba dedicated to the Samba de Gafieira Dance community in Perth); Belas Artes / Fine Artes (a choro about her love Geoffrey Drake-Brockman’s artworks and artistic inspirations in Perth).

Bossa Nova is more alive than ever with the voice and groove of Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias. After the success of her USA and Japan tours in 2018, Perth-based Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, is back at the Ellington Jazz Club. Juliana invites you on a musical voyage to Bahia, the “bay of all rhythms”. On this journey you will discover the origins of many of Brazil’s most significant musical movements: Samba, Bossa-Nova, and Tropicalia, as well as the Afro-Bahia fusions of Samba-de-Roda, Capoeira, Afoxe, Samba-Reggae and Carnaval.

In the late 90s Juliana Areias lived in Salvador, Bahia’s capital and also the first capital of Brazil. Salvador is the Brazil’s most African city, where colourful big drums are played in the streets and ladies still dress in the traditional African clothes made famous by the 1940s Hollywood star Carmen Miranda.

The Bahia of all rhythms concert will feature magic songs about the heavenly beach of Itapuan, (where Juliana used to live and started her singing career); mythic creatures such as Yemanja, the Afro-Brazilian Goddess of the Sea; African slave cultural contributions and the happiness of the Carnaval of Bahia. Juliana Areias will perform iconic bossa and afro-sambas composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Baden Powell and Ary Barroso – to delicious tunes from Bahian artists such as Joao Gilberto (creator of Bossa Nova), Dorival Caymmi, Assis Valente, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Carlinhos Brown, Olodum, A Cor do Som, Novos Baianos, Roberto Mendes, Jorge Portugal and Raul Seixas as well as a few originals from Juliana’s internationally-acclaimed Bossa Nova Baby album.

For this exceptionally colourful concert, Juliana Areias has assembled a very special line-up of musicians and special guests – showcasing the amazing talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth:

After enthralling audiences across the USA, Japan and Europe, Juliana Areias, globally acclaimed as the “Bossa Nova Baby”, for the first time in Brisbane.

Bossa Nova is more alive than ever with the voice and groove of Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias. Dubbed the ‘Bossa Nova Baby’, this Perth-based Brazilian singer-songwriter and multiple award finalist, brings a new edge to traditional Brazilian rhythms – creating a contemporary Latin Jazz musical fusion which is taking the Australian and the International music scene by storm.

Juliana Areias Concert features the original songs of her Bossa Nova Baby album as well as exclusive arrangements of bossa and samba hits such as “Mas que Nada”, “Water of March”and “The Girl from Ipanema”.

Juliana was personally introduced to the Bossa Nova founders when she was a teenager by legendary Brazilian Music historian and journalist Ruy Castro who also named her “The Bossa Nova Baby”. This direct learning and unique experience have inspired her to become a professional singer and songwriter.

Juliana Areias opens The Surrealist Ball – Dali Land – Fringe World Festival

Walk the red carpet into the mind of Salvador Dali in an exclusive, cocktail-style event and be one of the first people in the world to experience DALI LAND.

Including full access to all exhibition areas, guests will also see a range of premier performers and artists deliver an unforgettable evening of food, wine, art and decadence. Pull out all the stops and dress to impress as you walk the red carpet into this exclusive event.

Tickets include champagne on arrival, canapé food service and all entertainment from 7:30pm to 11:00 before retreating to The Salon rooftop bar to watch the sun rise over Fringe World 2019.

For 30 days, the currently vacant Metro City will be transformed into DALI LAND, a four-level temple to the surreal from 18 January to 17 February 2019. Designed by Perth curator Robert Buratti, DALI LAND is an immersive exhibition that gives the people of Perth the unique opportunity to enter the mind of surrealist master Salvador Dali.

With 2019 marking the 30th anniversary of Salvador Dali’s passing, the exhibition will feature more than 200 of Dali’s works, including drawings, sculptures, film, graphics, virtual reality and photography.

A secondary DALI LAND exhibition entitled Unconscious Contemporary will showcase works of early surrealist masters Max Ernst, Andre Masson, Jean Cocteau, Andre Breton and Man Ray alongside contemporary artists including Geoffrey Drake-Brockman, Stormie Mills, Kyle Hughes-Odgers, Alex Maciver, Ben Juniper, Steve Browne, Robert Buratti and Katie Moore.
Unconscious Contemporary will also feature works by filmmaker Alex Proyas (director of The Crow, Dark City, Gods of Egypt, I-Robot) and award winning photographer, Thor Engelstad.

Included in the exhibition ticket, visitors to DALI LAND can also experience the Dada Cinema, where the best and most influential surrealist films of all time will be shown. View screenings of films by Maya Deren, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Hans Richter, Ferdinand Leger to name a few. Or step into the award winning virtual reality experience that is “Dreams Of Dali”, and take a trip through Dali’s most mesmerising visions.

In addition to the exhibitions, DALI LAND will play host to a spectacular nightly program of live events and performances during the Fringe World Festival, including:

Leny Andrade, soon turning 76 (26/1) is the goddess of Brazilian Jazz. Her voice and groove has been my greatest influence as a singer… she is also the singer I have watched live the most in my life, my diva… Now she is living at this amazing place called “Retiro dos Artistas”, a place created 100 years ago by artists and maintained mainly by artists to dignify artists who have contribute to the Brazilian Culture and the Arts their entire life. This is the Brazil I am so proud of… the Brazil I carry with me for over 22 years living abroad. Thank you beloved Leny! Thank you all involved in creating this tribute to our queen of groove. Thank you as well to all creators, supporters and all people behind “Retiro dos Artistas” home, bravely keeping this space and the memory of our extraordinary cultural and artistic legacy alive and living with quality of life! This is a translation from Portuguese of the last verse of the song “Belas Artes” ( Fine Arts) composed by Doug de Vries and Juliana Areias.  The song is dedicated to Juliana’s love,   Australian Cybernets Artist Geoffrey Drake-Brockman. It talks about how Juliana sees Geoffrey’s artwork creations and inspirations. It is also about their love story and things they love doing together such as creating tableau vivants.

Tableau vivant for Halloween… Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc) was burned at the stake in 1431 for the heresy of talking directly with God and dressing and fighting as a man. Jeanne was one of thousands of people (mainly women) burned as witches in medieval times.

The concert will embrace timeless Bossa classics – such as; The Girl from Ipanema, One note samba, Mas que nada, Waters of March, No More Blues (Chega de Saudade) – that were introduced to the English-speaking world by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao & Astrud Gilberto, Sergio Mendes, Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. The show will also feature irresistible Pop songs and fresh arrangements with the Bossa resonance reflecting upon artists such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Black Eyes Peas, Crowded House, The Police, Madonna, Sade, George Michael, Culture Club, Kate Perry, Bruno Mars, Al Jarreau, Diana Krall and Herbie Hancock.

In the country of Samba, even Brazilian Pop Rock Stars were influenced by Bossa Nova in the way they sang so smoothly and composed songs combing Rock ‘n Roll attitude with poetry, wit, and tropical waves. The concert will give you the opportunity to taste Bossa Nova-inspired songs composed by Brazilian contemporary Pop Rock artists such as Rita Lee (Brazil’s Queen of Rock), Cazuza (Brazil’s Poet of Rock), Lenine, Paralamas do Sucesso, Lobao, Djavan, Maria Gadu, Marisa Montes, Tribalistas, Lulu Santos, Guilherme Arante, Bebel Gilberto and Rosa Passos as well as a few Juliana Areias original compositions.
