Happy Bossa Nova Day – Tom Jobim & Leny Andrade birthday tribute

HAPPY BOSSA NOVA DAY! The day on which Antônio Carlos Jobim & Leny Andrade were born, both pivotal artists in the creation and development of Bossa Nova and Samba Jazz. No wonder they are my favourite composer and singer respectively.

Leny used to call me her “little friend photographer”… At the same time, my dear friend Ruy Castro gave me the nickname “Bossa Nova Baby”,  and gave me access to many rehearsals and concerts of the Chega de Saudade Concert Series featuring all my Bossa Nova idols…  This luck of meeting them all personally and taking all opportunities to watch them live, be with them during the rehearsals and after the concerts, having dinner all together, during my teenage years, inspired me to become a singer.

Here is our tribute to both of them, Leny Andrade and Tom Jobim, featuring 3 of their original arrangements and 1 surprise arrangement.

Waters of March – composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim

Wave – composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim, arranged by Leny Andrade’s band.

Dindi – composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Aloysio de Oliveira featuring Loro Bardot with Juliana Areias.

Eu quero ver – composed by Carlinhos Vergueiro / J. Petrolino / Landinho , arranged by Leny Andrade’s band.

🎥 Videos recorded at the Ellington Jazz Club, Perth, Australia, featuring: Juliana Areias (voice), Paul Millard (sax/flute), Moha Michel (piano), Joshua de Silva (guitar), Tommi Flamenco (bass), Rafael Medeiros de Souza (percussion), Francisco Munhoz (drums), Bronton Ainsworth (drums) and very special guest Loro Bardot.

Beautiful day to became Australian – thanks to Bossa Nova

What a beautiful day to become Australian! So much to say… I feel only gratitude. This citizenship comes after living in Perth for 16 years and after receiving the rare Global Distinguished Talent Visa about 2 years ago thanks to a life long dedication to Bossa Nova worldwide.

Thank you Meu Amor Geoffrey, for all your love, encouragement and support at every step… For helping me and understanding how important it was to be granted Australian citizenship for me and for my beloved kids Jobim and Lilas, not by the easiest way… but because I am an artist.

Why we do what we do, is important. It matters that we persist in what we believe is the best contribution we can give to the world.

To be an artist means to deal with continuous uncertainty, frequent rejection and lack of understanding almost everyday. Yet, on a day like today, the value of culture and the arts is reaffirmed.

Thank you Australia.

Thank you Bossa Nova.

Thank you Ruy Castro. Thank you Menescal.

Thank you meus amores Geoffrey, Jobim, Lilas and Lua.

Thank you to my family and friends here and around the world. Thank you to every person I have ever met and every life event which has brought me to here and now.

This Friday 20 September, I get to do what I love doing and I hope I can have the honour of celebrating with you at our Juliana Areias – Jobim Forever Concert at the Ellington Jazz Club. http://www.julianaareias.com (link in bio).

Juliana Areias – Jobim Forever

Thank you Antônio Carlos Jobim, Leny Andrade, Joao Gilberto, Vinícius de Moraes and all bossa nova masters.

Thank you Perth.

Thank you the Ellington Jazz Club

Thank you all for supporting live music in this extraordinary city we all love to call home. Our Island Home – Australia.

JUliANA AREIAS – SAMBA JAZZ – LENY ANDRADE (Sat 16 DEC – PERTH)

  • PERTH Sat 16 Dec 2023 – Juliana Areias – Samba Jazz – Leny Andrade  @ The Ellington Jazz Club 7pm – BOOK NOW

Award winning Brazilian singer-songwriter – Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, invites you to finish the year in the grooviest mode, celebrating the music and life of the greatest lady of Brazilian Samba-Jazz: Leny Andrade.

Described by Tony Bennett as the “Ella Fitzgerald  of Brazil”, Leny spent her career touring the world and living between her home town of Rio de Janeiro, New York and Mexico. Tony used to often come to watch Leny’s concerts and he loved to make live drawings of her while she was performing. Tony Bennet and Leny Andrade were together in music, friendship and life, to the point of leaving us only a few days apart, on the 21st and 24th of July 2023 respectively.

For the The New York Times Andrade was both the Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald of bossa nova …”her voice seems to contain the body and soul of Brazil.”

Leny Andrade’s impeccable sense of rhythm, signature scats, rich low vocals, and majestic presence has gained the respect and admiration of generations. Indeed, Leny is the singer who Juliana Areias most saw live since her teenage years, and is Areias’s greatest inspiration to become a singer herself.

The concert will feature some of the most iconic songs and arrangements from Leny’s repertoire, featuring composers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ivan Lins, Djavan, Chico Buarque, Gonzaquinha, Moacyr Luz, Aldir Blanc, Dolores Duran, Carlos Lyra, Durval Ferreira, Mauricio Einhorn… as well as the very first bolero Leny learned in Spanish “Si me enamoro” by Sergio Mianovich, and some of the delicious stories she used to tell on stage which Juliana Areias still remembers by heart.

Juliana Areias is honoured to share the stage once more with the amazing musicians of her Bossa Nova Baby band: Joshua de Silva (seven string guitar), Paul Millard (sax/flute), Tommi Flamenco (bass), Bronton Ainsworth (drums), Rafael Medeiros de Souza (percussion); and special guest singer-songwriter Loro Bardot. This will be the last opportunity to enjoy Juliana Areias and Joshua de Silva performing together and a celebration of all the beautiful musicianship they have created during six years of collaboration.

Juliana Areias has performed on major stages internationally including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro. Dubbed the “Bossa Nova Baby” by iconic Brazilian journalist Ruy Castro, her original album “Bossa Nova Baby” won “Best Brazilian Album” at the US Focus Brazil Awards in 2019 and spent five weeks in the US Top 100 Jazz Charts. Juliana has also been nominated five times for Western Australian Music Awards including Best World Music Act and Best Song.

Now it is your turn to feel spellbound by the Bossa Nova Baby, Juliana Areias.

–“The idea of mixing styles and cultures is reflected in Areias’ life and her music.”, Daily Record – USA

–“Rhythmically perfect and passionate vocal delivery. The toast of the Perth Jazz Scene. The release of Bossa Nova Baby has elevated her above a mere covers singer or bossa specialist. The singer excels in an elegant co-composed duet (Belas Artes) with Australia’s finest Brazilian-oriented 7-string guitarist, Doug de Vries” – The Australian

In this spirit, after her “welcome back home” performances at the City of Perth’s Winter Festival (25/7) – Winter Sounds, celebrating the original music of Western Australia, produced by WAM ( Western Australia Music) and at the Ellington Jazz Club (28/7); Juliana Areias annouces her participation and support for the “Brazil V Australia Capoeira Fundraiser Gig”  at the Rosemount Hotel on Sunday 26th August 2018 featuring an ecletic line-up  from pop ballades, bossa, samba, capoeira to funk performers:

Renata Fantoches (4pm); Helen Townsend (4.45pm); Constanza Herrero (5.30pm); Belle Harvey & Band (6.15-6.45pm), Capoeira show (7-7.15pm);  Juliana Areias (7.30-8pm – with Joshua de Silva – guitar and Rafael Souza – pandeiro); Randa And The Soul Kingdom (8.15pm-9pm), Brazilian DJ (9-10pm).

“Perth’s great music scene gets together to support a genuine school dedicated to teach kids and adults the art of Capoeira, the Brazilian martial art which is more than a self defence fight, it is the expression of dance, music, culture and resistance created by our African slave ancestors which now is admired all around the world. My kids – now teenagers – were among the first children to learn Capoeira at this school and it is such a pleasure to see every year more people discovering and falling in love with it. Come this Sunday to experienceo a watercolour of sounds and how beautiful, fun and powerful Capoeira is. Facebook event : Brazil V Australia Capoeira Fundraiser Gig” – invites Juliana.
