Beautiful day to became Australian – thanks to Bossa Nova

What a beautiful day to become Australian! So much to say… I feel only gratitude. This citizenship comes after living in Perth for 16 years and after receiving the rare Global Distinguished Talent Visa about 2 years ago thanks to a life long dedication to Bossa Nova worldwide.

Thank you Meu Amor Geoffrey, for all your love, encouragement and support at every step… For helping me and understanding how important it was to be granted Australian citizenship for me and for my beloved kids Jobim and Lilas, not by the easiest way… but because I am an artist. 

Why we do what we do, is important. It matters that we persist in what we believe is the best contribution we can give to the world. 

To be an artist means to deal with continuous uncertainty, frequent rejection and lack of understanding almost everyday. Yet, on a day like today, the value of culture and the arts is reaffirmed. 

Thank you Australia. 

Thank you Bossa Nova. 

Thank you Ruy Castro. Thank you Menescal. 

Thank you meus amores Geoffrey, Jobim, Lilas and Lua.

Thank you to my family and friends here and around the world. Thank you to every person I have ever met and every life event which has brought me to here and now.

After her “All That Samba” tour of Singapore and Australia, completed just before the epidemic lockdown,  Perth’s own Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby” is glad to be back on stage to present her “True Live” Concert!

“True Live” will showcase the songs that inspired Juliana to keep her sanity, hope, and joy during the fearful pandemic period. She will pay tribute to the iconic Brazilian songwriter Aldir Blanc – who died of Covid -19 on May 4th. Aldir’s unforgettable sambas were co-composed and recorded by some of Brazil’s best artists such as Elis Regina, Joao Bosco, Guinga and  Moacyr Luz.

The concert will also reflect on Juliana’s Brazilian-Australian-Kiwi-World Citizen identity and how we all can feel related to the Black Lives Matter movement through the joyful and powerful songs of Afro-Brazillian composers such as Gilberto Gil, Djavan, Milton Nascimento, Carlinhos Brown, Luiz Melodia, Ale Kali and Luedji Luna. Juliana, originally from Sao Paulo City, has always been passionate in exploring her European, African and Indigenous roots. Juliana will also touch on her connection with Bahia, the most African State of Brazil, where she lived prior to moving to Switzerland, New Zealand and Australia.  Above all, this concert will celebrate the rich mixture of humanity, the joy of being alive, and the life-changing contributions made by music and musicians.

Juliana Areias is looking forward to performing again with her band of dear friends and incredible musicians – showcasing the amazing talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth: Paul Millard – sax/flute, Joshua de Silva – guitar, Tommi Flamenco – bass, Bronton Ainsworth – drums and special guests: percussionists Rafael Medeiro de Souza and Lee Coumbe along with samba de gafieira and forro dance teachers Ana Lucia Pereira Silva and Sarah Quinn – co-founders of “Let The Dance Speak”

After enthralling audiences across the US and Japan, with her “Bossa Nova Baby” concerts in New York, California, Florida, New Jersey, Tokyo and Nagoya, Perth-based Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, is back at the Ellington Jazz Club, and invites you on a musical voyage, with her new show called “Oceano”.

The Oceano concert will feature songs about the seven seas, iconic beaches, mythic creatures and magic tales of Neptune, Poseidon, Yemanja, sirens, mermaids, pirates, fish-men, African slave ships and Atlantis’s mysteries.

Dive into a repertoire of alluring originals and irresistible covers; from bossa and jazz classics like “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Beyond the Sea” (“La Mer”); to a water-colour of rhythms by Brazilian artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Roberto Menescal, Djavan, Tim Maia, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Marisa Montes, Ceu, Maria Gadu, Lenine, Marina, Lulu Santos, Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo.

The concert will also reference UK artists who influenced Juliana Areias when she lived in Europe during the 90’s – David Byrne’s record with Caetano Veloso “Dreamworld – Red Hot” (1998) and Smoke City’s record “Underwater Love” (1997).

In between her USA and Japan tours, Juliana Areias is glad to be back home in Perth, Western Australia, celebrating the amazing original music and unique creative community of Perth.

“The greatest cultural lesson I have learned in America, was how much Americans embrace and celebrate their own culture and the arts, making ordinary life extraordinary. Let’s face it,  Perth has some of the best beaches of this planet, mesmerasing sky, trees, birds, friendly people, clean-safe-traffic free streets, a blessed life style and an amazing creative community exporting world class music, fine-art, films…  No more understatements, please. It is time we celebrate how lucky we are to be able to live and produce culture and arts here.  Perth is not just okay. Perth is great! Perth is wonderful! I love Perth! I am in love with Perth… I have always been… but now, even more than ever!I am so proud of calling Perth home and being part of this diverse and dynamic artistic scene. My kids – now teenagers – were among the first children to learn Capoeira at this school and it is such a pleasure to see every year more people discovering and falling in love with it. Juliana Areias, the Bossa Nova Baby invites Mike Bevan – one of the best Australian guitarists, based in Adelaide –  for this unique musical collaboration at The Ellington Jazz Club.

Together with bassist Adam Springuetti, they will present an enchanting repertoire of cool jazz, summer sambas, breezy bossas and captivating choros – Brazil’s most sophisticated musical genre, the precursor of samba – authentically performed by Mike in a seven string guitar.

It will also be a great opportunity to enjoy groovy improvisations and interesting originals such as “Estrela Acalanto” ( Star Lullaby) and “Garoto de Copacabana” ( The boy from Copacabana) co-composed by Juliana and Mike during one of Juliana’s trips to Adelaide.

Perth based, Brazil born singer and song-writer Juliana Areias’s career includes performances at Montreux Jazz Festival, Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s of London and Auckland Festival. Mike Bevan has performed jazz, blues and Brazilian music locally, nationally and internationally in Brazil, Japan, Korea and the US.

Mike tours the country regularly and has played WOMADelaide, Bellingen Global Carnival, the Famous Spiegeltent, the Adelaide Fringe and Cabaret Festivals and the Adelaide International Guitar Festival with Doug de Vries and Yamandu Costa.

Brazilian singer Juliana Areias, known as The Bossa Nova Baby is back in town celebrating the success of her Sydney and European tours, where she presented her Bossa Nova Baby Show at the Sydney Opera House, at the Munganga Theatre in Amsterdam and at the Ronnie Scott in London, the “Mecca” of the Jazz in Europe.

Showcasing a fine mixture of well loved bossa and samba hits such as the Girl from Ipanema and Mas que Nada, as well as her original songs, the concert presents an intimate version of the touring shows featuring a quintet formed by Juliana Areias – vocals, Paul Millard – sax/flute, Gabriel Fatin – piano, Adam Springuetti – bass and Brazilian super groovy stars Marcio Mendes – percussion/guitar and Fabio Macarrao – Drums.
