Juliana Areias – SUNSET SONGS AT NORTH COTTESLOE IS BACK

Sunset Songs Returns to North Cottesloe – Free Every Friday this Summer
2 January – 27 March 2026 | 6–8pm | Beside Magic Apple

Award-winning Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, known as The Bossa Nova Baby, is back with her much-loved Sunset Songs at North Cottesloe series. Every Friday evening from 2 January to 27 March 2026, locals and visitors are invited to enjoy free, intimate beachside performances set against Perth’s iconic sunsets.

After a two-summer hiatus, Juliana brings her smooth bossa nova and Brazilian jazz back to her favourite local beach, joined by WAAPA-trained acoustic-guitarists Joshua de Silva and Ridge Moss. A minimalist, family-friendly activity for the whole community, Sunset Songs invites audiences to bring a picnic, unwind and enjoy iconic West Coast sunsets set to gentle Brazilian rhythms.

Perth’s own Girl from Ipanema — or rather, our Girl from Cottesloe — brings her authentic, gentle bossa nova tunes back to the place she calls home. Juliana explains that the community spirit behind the series is what brings her back:“Every time I walk along the beach, someone asks when the Sunset Songs at North Cottesloe series will return. I’ve missed it too. Bossa nova was born at the beach, and the beach was my first stage as a singer in Brazil, and even my surname Areias means beach sands, so returning to sing here is always deeply meaningful to me, it feels like coming full circle. I’m grateful to the Town of Cottesloe and the NCSLSC for supporting the idea again –  it’s truly a gift to share with the community. If I can keep singing close to the sea until I die, I’ll be happy.”

Recently seen at the Perth International Jazz Festival, Juliana has performed internationally at some of the world’s most renowned venues, including the Sydney Opera House, Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Ronnie Scott’s (London), The Green Room (New York), and Rio’s legendary Beco das Garrafas, where bossa nova was born.

Juliana’s love of music and performance stretches back to her teenage years in Brazil, when she was personally introduced to the founders of bossa nova by legendary Brazilian journalist and historian Ruy Castro, who gave her the nickname The Bossa Nova Baby. That early connection inspired her to pursue a professional career in music – one that has taken her across Europe, the USA, Japan, Singapore, Latin America, New Zealand and Australia.

Her acclaimed album Bossa Nova Baby won Best Brazilian Album at the US Focus Brazil Awards and reached the US Top 100 Jazz Charts. She is a five-time Western Australian Music Awards nominee, with ABC Radio National describing her as “the changing face of Australian music”, and The Australian praising her for “excelling in elegance.”

The Sunset Songs performances are entirely self-funded, with Juliana welcoming donations and sponsorship to help sustain the project. The series is designed to be inclusive and engaging: audiences are free to dance, walk along the sand, enjoy a meal or picnic, or simply stop for a moment and soak in the music.

Critics internationally have celebrated Juliana’s artistry:

  • “Rhythmically perfect and passionate vocal delivery… She excels in elegance.”The Australian
  • “A wonderful Brazilian-Australian bossa nova baby with contemporary bossa nova songs.”Key and Chords, Belgium
  • “It’s bossa that plays soccer with jazz — and scores.”O GLOBO, Brazil
  • “Mixing styles and cultures is reflected in her life and music.”Daily Record, USA

This summer, West Australians are invited to experience the magic of Sunset Songs at North Cottesloe — an enchanting mix of music, community and the golden beauty of Perth sunsets, created by a local artist for her home and the people who love it.

A cool wave of Brazilian Music

Brazilian music is a vast universe – and it is rare to find a Radio Show curator who truly understands, researches and is able to bring a cool and full panorama of it with diversity and discernment combined.

This is exactly what you will find at the new radio show “Back in Brazil” hosted by Pablo Nascer at Radio Northern Beaches FM – Sydney – every Tuesday or online worldwide anytime you want.

I had the pleasure to meet Pablo for the first time in 2011 during my first presentation in Sydney at the Ritmo Festival for over 30k people at Darling Harbour. Thanks to Pablo, I also met and become friends with a fantastic team of artists behind the superb Abuka project – Tiago de Lucca, Sandro Bueno and Raphael Brasil.

Here are some historical photos of these encounters in 2011. Thank you Pablo for your eclectic fine taste, research and the information you bring to the show. I wish you could be here in Perth for our presentation at the Perth International Jazz Festival on 25 Oct! PIJF: JULIANA AREIAS (BRA/PER) at The Ellington Jazz Club ! Happy Bossa Nova Day – Tom Jobim & Leny Andrade birthday tribute

HAPPY BOSSA NOVA DAY! The day on which Antônio Carlos Jobim & Leny Andrade were born, both pivotal artists in the creation and development of Bossa Nova and Samba Jazz. No wonder they are my favourite composer and singer respectively.

Leny used to call me her “little friend photographer”… At the same time, my dear friend Ruy Castro gave me the nickname “Bossa Nova Baby”,  and gave me access to many rehearsals and concerts of the Chega de Saudade Concert Series featuring all my Bossa Nova idols…  This luck of meeting them all personally and taking all opportunities to watch them live, be with them during the rehearsals and after the concerts, having dinner all together, during my teenage years, inspired me to become a singer.

Here is our tribute to both of them, Leny Andrade and Tom Jobim, featuring 3 of their original arrangements and 1 surprise arrangement.

Waters of March – composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim

Wave – composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim, arranged by Leny Andrade’s band.

Dindi – composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Aloysio de Oliveira featuring Loro Bardot with Juliana Areias.

Eu quero ver – composed by Carlinhos Vergueiro / J. Petrolino / Landinho , arranged by Leny Andrade’s band.

🎥 Videos recorded at the Ellington Jazz Club, Perth, Australia, featuring: Juliana Areias (voice), Paul Millard (sax/flute), Moha Michel (piano), Joshua de Silva (guitar), Tommi Flamenco (bass), Rafael Medeiros de Souza (percussion), Francisco Munhoz (drums), Bronton Ainsworth (drums) and very special guest Loro Bardot.

Beautiful day to became Australian – thanks to Bossa Nova

What a beautiful day to become Australian! So much to say… I feel only gratitude. This citizenship comes after living in Perth for 16 years and after receiving the rare Global Distinguished Talent Visa about 2 years ago thanks to a life long dedication to Bossa Nova worldwide.

Thank you Meu Amor Geoffrey, for all your love, encouragement and support at every step… For helping me and understanding how important it was to be granted Australian citizenship for me and for my beloved kids Jobim and Lilas, not by the easiest way… but because I am an artist.

Why we do what we do, is important. It matters that we persist in what we believe is the best contribution we can give to the world.

To be an artist means to deal with continuous uncertainty, frequent rejection and lack of understanding almost everyday. Yet, on a day like today, the value of culture and the arts is reaffirmed.

Thank you Australia.

Thank you Bossa Nova.

Thank you Ruy Castro. Thank you Menescal.

Thank you meus amores Geoffrey, Jobim, Lilas and Lua.

Thank you to my family and friends here and around the world. Thank you to every person I have ever met and every life event which has brought me to here and now.

This Friday 20 September, I get to do what I love doing and I hope I can have the honour of celebrating with you at our Juliana Areias – Jobim Forever Concert at the Ellington Jazz Club. http://www.julianaareias.com (link in bio).

Juliana Areias – Jobim Forever

Thank you Antônio Carlos Jobim, Leny Andrade, Joao Gilberto, Vinícius de Moraes and all bossa nova masters.

Thank you Perth.

Thank you the Ellington Jazz Club

Thank you all for supporting live music in this extraordinary city we all love to call home. Our Island Home – Australia.

“True Live” will showcase the songs that inspired Juliana to keep her sanity, hope, and joy during the fearful pandemic period. All That Samba YouTube Playlist – Keeping alive and searching for meaning

Hello beloved people around the planet… Since Mid March you have not heard much about music from me, but much more about my political journey … Thank you for caring, for listening… You know who you are…

Each one of us is coping the best (or worse) we can with these multiple global crises… Most of the time I have been feeling in fear, lost, depressed, worried, guilty, overwhelmed, drained, paralysed… finding very hard to be my “normal positive self”, with all tragedies around… searching for perspective, meaning in every view, every news, every day, every challenge… Dealing with survival, life threatening and death in the family and of friends.

Brazil’s out of control situation particularly has created even a serious identity crisis… Is the Brazil I represent with my art still current? This colourful country with friendly and talented people capable to face any challenge with creativity and joy? Or has Brazil become just a country of brutality and hypocrisy? How to keep singing the beauty of a country that is dying, is killing itself?

I have no answers yet, but I can see that I am not the only one feeling like this… And, ironically, this seams to be the only way I can feel some hope for Brazil, for humanity, for the planet, for the future, for my art…

Since I am not feeling strong, I am not yet capable to smile and produce “lives” as requested by some people I love … But I am finally very slowly uploading a playlist on my YouTube channel with live performances from my most recent All That Samba Tour around Australia and Singapore which we were lucky to be able to finish in mid March 2020… Only three months ago,but it feels like it was another life… There are about 15 news videos there and I will keep uploading more slowly… when I find energy to do so… I hope it can bring us some hope, light and joy…

Keep looking after yourselves and helping others anyway you can…

With love , Ju
