Hello Perth Royal Show lovers! This year WAM invites you to celebrate WA original music at the Perth Royal Show. If you are coming to the show this Sunday 29 Sept, lunch time (12pm-2pm) I will be there singing with my dear friend and superb guitarist Mark Shanahan the original songs of the Bossa Nova Baby Album. See you there!
In between her USA and Japan tours, Juliana Areias is glad to be back home in Perth, Western Australia, celebrating the amazing original music and unique creative community of Perth.
“The greatest cultural lesson I have learned in America, was how much Americans embrace and celebrate their own culture and the arts, making ordinary life extraordinary. Let’s face it, Perth has some of the best beaches of this planet, mesmerasing sky, trees, birds, friendly people, clean-safe-traffic free streets, a blessed life style and an amazing creative community exporting world class music, fine-art, films… No more understatements, please. It is time we celebrate how lucky we are to be able to live and produce culture and arts here. Perth is not just okay. Perth is great! Perth is wonderful! I love Perth! I am in love with Perth… I have always been… but now, even more than ever!I am so proud of calling Perth home and being part of this diverse and dynamic artistic scene. Let’s face the music and dance.”
In this spirit, after her “welcome back home” performances at the City of Perth’s Winter Festival (25/7) – Winter Sounds, celebrating the original music of Western Australia, produced by WAM ( Western Australia Music) and at the Ellington Jazz Club (28/7); Juliana Areias annouces her participation and support for the “Brazil V Australia Capoeira Fundraiser Gig” at the Rosemount Hotel on Sunday 26th August 2018 featuring an ecletic line-up from pop ballades, bossa, samba, capoeira to funk performers:
Renata Fantoches (4pm); Helen Townsend (4.45pm); Constanza Herrero (5.30pm); Belle Harvey & Band (6.15-6.45pm), Capoeira show (7-7.15pm); Juliana Areias (7.30-8pm – with Joshua de Silva – guitar and Rafael Souza – pandeiro); Randa And The Soul Kingdom (8.15pm-9pm), Brazilian DJ (9-10pm).
“Perth’s great music scene gets together to support a genuine school dedicated to teach kids and adults the art of Capoeira, the Brazilian martial art which is more than a self defence fight, it is the expression of dance, music, culture and resistance created by our African slave ancestors which now is admired all around the world. My kids – now teenagers – were among the first children to learn Capoeira at this school and it is such a pleasure to see every year more people discovering and falling in love with it. Come this Sunday to experienceo a watercolour of sounds and how beautiful, fun and powerful Capoeira is. Facebook event : Brazil V Australia Capoeira Fundraiser Gig” – invites Juliana.

Celebrating Rita Lee’s 70 birthday (31 Dec 2017) in Perth, Western Australia – the most isolated metropolis of the world
Irresistible, irreverent, witty, daring, fun, radiant, eclectic and romantic idealist – these are just few of the words used to describe the music and personality of Rita Lee, Brazil’s iconic tropical pop-rock singer/songwriter superstar. Rita Lee has sold more than 60 millions albums worldwide, has been performing for over 50 years and is turning 70 on the 31st of December 2017.
Juliana Areias invites you to celebrate Rita Lee’s music and discover Juliana’s own “psychedelic” side! Rita Lee was the daughter of American and Italian immigrants, and her music is the “most complete translation” of the cosmopolitan spectrum of Sao Paulo City – a mixture of Rock’ n Roll, Blues, Pop, Shuffle, Swing with Latin Rhythms such as Bolero, Samba and Bossa Nova.
Rita Lee, Queen of Rock, was Juliana’s very first musical influence.
The show will feature Juliana Areias (vocals), Marcus Tranjan (guitar) and Dana Ogle (percussion) performing songs from Rita Lee’s endless list of greatest hits, such as the infectuous Lança Perfume (Perfume Spray – Prince Charles’s declared favourite tune), Ovelha Negra (Black Sheep), Doce Vampiro (Sweet Vampire), Mania de Você (Mania of you), Mutante (Changeable), Nem Luxo, nem Lixo (Neither Luxury nor Rubbish), Esse tal de Rock in Roll (This certain Rock in Roll), Ando Meio Desligado (I have been a bit absent minded)… as well as her Beatles arrangements and collaborations with other iconic Brazilian composers and singers such as Cazuza – Perto do Fogo (Near the fire), Zelia Duncan and Maria Rita – Pagu (a witch who died in the inquisition), Ed Motta – Fora da Lei (Outlaw) , Paulo Coelho – Arrombou a Festa (Broke into the Party), Elis Regina – Alo Alo Marciano (Hello Mars Alien) and Joao Gilberto – Jou Jou Balangadã and Brasil com S (Jou Jou Bijoux / Brazil with S).
Rita Lee has been passionately singing about the beauty of women’s freedom of expression, sexuality, pleasure, desires and life aspirations for decades – well before Madonna hit the scene. From the time when Rita’s teenage band “Mutantes” participated in the Tropicalia revolutionary musical movement (1966); to her arrest by the Brazilian Military Dictatorship when she was pregnant of her first son (1976); to her life and musical marriage with Roberto de Carvalho, (who she still calls her boyfriend after over 40 years together), here we have a 70 year old super-artist and woman “full of life and grace and keen to make a lot of people happy with her music” – as her song “Saude” (Health) well-says.
Let’s celebrate Rita Lee’s extravagant music and enjoy ourselves on Saturday the 9th of December from 7pm at Geoffrey’s Studio (end of Government Rd – Nedlands).
A red rose on the piano. A special night at the Ellington Jazz Club. Bossa Nova Baby Show Tribute to Graham Wood’s life, talent and legacy. Thank you everyone for being part of it last night. With love from all of us.
This week on Wednesday 19th July, Perth lost Graham Wood, great pianist, academic, co-owner of The Ellington Jazz Club and founder of The Perth International jazz Festival. My condolences to the family, Alex, the kids… May Graham be with his beautiful mother Stella and his father… May Graham always be with us through his music and all that he has created to make a difference.
Without Graham, the Bossa Nova Baby album would not sound the same. Without Graham, there would be no Ellington Jazz Club, no Perth International Jazz Festival… It was even Graham who introduced me and recommended the talented young pianist Shai Martin who performed and shared the Ellington stage with us this Friday… Without Graham all the pianists and jazz students from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) would not be the same… Jazz would not be the same, Perth and Australia would not be the same…
You never know how you feel about death until it strikes…
RIP, Graham… Eternal life to your music, creations and legacy… With love from all of us…

Juliana Areias announces her first performance at Far North Queensland, presenting the Bossa Nova Baby show at the Tanks Art Centre as part of the 10th Jazz Up North Series on Friday 3rd of June 2016, sharing the Tank Arts Centre with The Cat Empire.
Thanks to the support of the Department of Culture and the Arts of Western Australia, she is bringing her full band from Perth to Cairns featuring the legendary saxophonist/flutist Paul Millard and guitarist Ray Walker as well as some of the most exciting Australian new talents pianist Shai Martin, bassist Joe Southwell and drummer Bronton Ainsworth.
Calling all jazz and Bossa Nova aficionados, Perth-based singer Juliana Areias will be heading up north in June for a very special and intimate performance as part of the 2016 Jazz Up North Series at Tanks Arts Centre. Brazilian-born Juliana has an ardent passion for her musical heritage. Her performances are a manifestation of her love for Bossa Nova, Samba, Tango and jazz, each composed as a dialogue between traditional and contemporary forms.
The effervescent songstress is looking forward to bringing her unique style to North Queensland for her first ever performance at Tanks. “Brazilian music is my passion, my cultural identity, my artistic language and the gift I can share with the world,” she enthuses. “My friend – the singer Tara Tiba – has performed at Tanks Arts Centre before and told me that it was one of the best venues she has performed at in Australia. I cannot wait to experience it!”
The performance will provide Juliana with the opportunity to showcase music from her debut album Bossa Nova Baby, a melting pot of Brazilian jazz that has been earning her rave reviews. “It features 12 songs co-written with superb musicians around the globe,” says Juliana. “It was arranged, produced and performed by some of the best jazz musicians in Perth and Melbourne, including Pete Jeavons, Doug De Vries, Graham Wood, Ray Walker, Paul Millard, Marcio Mendes, Chris Tarr and Cathie Travers.”
The album has been embraced by audiences and even featured on national radio, which has meant a great deal to Juliana, validating her attempts to universalise Brazilian music and make it more accessible to Australian audiences. Since moving to Perth – after years of living in New Zealand and Europe – she has been determined to integrate Brazilian jazz into the Aussie psyche, something she has not only been succeeding with, but also making impressive impressions on fans and critics alike.
“The main difference between Australian and European audiences is that European audiences have been exposed to Brazilian Jazz for decades,” explains Juliana. “In New Zealand and Australia, Brazilian jazz is still quite new. Australian audiences are similarly appreciative though, extremely receptive and keen to discover what it is all about…I couldn’t be happier performing to audiences here and with the support of the Australian music industry as well.”
Juliana’s upcoming Cairns’ show will feature original music from her debut Bossa Nova Baby, plus contemporary arrangements of Latin jazz standards. She will be joined by her band, a selection of inspired jazz musicians, including young pianist Shai Martin and legendary guitarist Ray Walker.
Don’t miss out when Juliana Areias performs for one night only at Tanks Arts Centre on Friday 3rd June as part of the Jazz Up North Series. Tickets are on sale now through Ticketlink.

Tuesday 18th November – 7pm at The Ellington Jazz Club – BOOK NOW Diana May Clark – “The Other Side of the Girl” Album Launch – feat. opening act by Juliana Areias & Doug de Vries Trio. (touring from Melbourne/ Brazil).
Juliana Areias is thrilled to announce that she will be sharing the stage and supporting her superb friends and performers from Melbourne for one night only magic presentation.
“While producing my own original album “Bossa Nova Baby” it is a honor to support another great original work, showcasing in Perth one of the best acts from Melbourne.”
Melbourne singer-songwriter and Brazilian song interpreter Diana May Clark launches her debut original album ‘The Other Side of the Girl’ at this special Ellington Launch event, with the support of Perth based Brazilian Singer Juliana Areias and the virtuoso Doug de Vries Trio.
Diana May Clark established her interpretive credentials by way of 2 award-winning recordings with Guitarist (collaborator and husband) Doug de Vries. Their take on the Brazilian Songbook is superb.
This project of ‘sunny grown up pop’ was in response to Clark taking to the piano after losing her voice for a winter. It combines the pop/rock/jazz influences she grew up with and the font of ‘musica brasileira’ that she still loves. Produced by Greg Arnold (Things of Stone and Wood) through a 60s Pure Pop filter, this is an album of summer anthems.
Playing Perth in acoustic mode, Diana’s songs speak of unity, the wheel of life, travel, family and having an escape plan. Her ‘film-noir’ ripe vocals the heart wrapped in collaborator/husband Doug de Vries’ cool guitar riffs and the good groove of Alastair Kerr’s drum kit and superb Pete Jeavons’ bass.
Patrons can expect psychedelic melodies peppered with occasional Portuguese lyrics, – don’t be afraid to dress with a 60s twist and be ready to fall in love with Diana’s sound!
“From the get go, Diana May Clark & The Sunny Sets’ ‘The Other Side of the Girl’ makes you wanna undulate. Not nod your head, not tap your toes nor click your fingers – you wanna move your hips. This is a disc designed to drive you to the dance floor.
Later, you can lie on your back staring at the sky and let the sublime blend of voice and music take you slipping through time like sunshine through tree tops. You’ll be needing a rest after all that dance floor action.”
The City of Perth – Winter Arts Season 2014 and the Northbridge Piazza’s popular Sunday Piazza Live music series, present a World Cup special with The Juliana Areias Brazillian Experience on 22 June -2-3pm – Free Family Event.
