Sunday Samba Summer Breeze… After performing for thousands of people at the Darling Harbour in Sydney recently, Brazilian singer Juliana Areias – the Bossa Nova Baby is back in town for a special performance at the Kulcha Festival Club as part of the Fremantle Festival 2011.

Global Tunes performed with Brazilian Passion. From silk bossas to sultry sambas, Juliana Areias’s four-continent repertoire embraces the best of the traditional and contemporary Brazilian music spectrum plus originals, improvisations and fusions. Performing with her, a stellar line up of musicians: Paul Millard ( sax/flute), Marcio Mendes ( percussion/backvocals) and Glenn Rogers ( guitar).

Juliana Areias is excited to come back to Kulcha which was her very first Australian Stage, bringings with her the magic subtleties, stories and the evolution of the bossa rhythm that has inspired people to sway gently for over 50 years. Bossa Nova is more alive than ever through the voice of Brazilian singer Juliana Areias, who returns to Perth after performing for 30.000  people at the Darling Harbour in Sydney recently. Juliana brings with her the magic subtleties, stories and the evolution of the bossa rhythm that has inspired people to sway gently for over 50 years.

Known as The Bossa Nova Baby – a nickname given by Brazilian journalist Ruy Castro (author of Bossa Nova’s history book Chega de Saudade) – Juliana’s love for this seductive music evolved into a desire to become a professional singer after meeting and learning directly from some of its creators.

The concert will embrace timeless bossa classics – such as; The Girl from Ipanema, Desafinado, One note samba, Mas que nada,  No more blues ( Chega de Saudade), Waters of March ( Aguas de Marco)  – that were introduced to the Western English Speaking world by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao & Astrud Gilberto, Sergio Mendes, Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra –  as well as breathtaking new songs and fresh arrangements with its resonance reflecting upon Diana Krall,  Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau, Raphael Rabello, Joao Donato, Cazuza, Marisa Montes, Rosa Passos and other more recent jazz & contemporary music icons.

On board with Juliana Areias on this sensuous musical journey, is a stellar line up of musicians including: Glenn Rogers-guitar, Tal Cohen-piano, Paul Millard – sax/flute, Nick Abbey-bass (7/9), Pete Jeavons-bass (19/10), Michael Boase-drums and the multi talented Brazilian, Marcio Mendes-percussion/backing vocals.

To make this an even more sensational night, Juliana is honoured to announce the presence of three of Australia’s finest jazz vocalists as her very special guests: James Flynn  and  Victoria Newton (7/9); and Libby Hammer and Victoria Newton (19/10).

September 2011 – Perth is showing that it is a city that brings culture, art and people together all over Australia. This coming Sunday, 18th of September, some of Perth’s finest  world music  talents will be in Sydney performing at the Ritmo Brazilian Festival. Sponsored by the International Office of Edith Cowan University (ECU) and Oi Exchange;  Brazilian jazz singer Juliana Areias  and Marcio Mendes, Thiago Santos from Sambalicious  will step on stage to represent Perth’s culturally diverse music talent and encourage study at WA’s most vibrant university in Australia’s most exciting and liveable city.

The Ritmo Brazilian Festival is Australia’s biggest and most important Brazilian event. In it’s 12th edition, it is part of the annual events calendar of the Darling Harbour Foreshore Authority. In 2010, it attracted 30,000 people fulfilling its aim to promote the benefit and joy of diversity in Australian society. The event is an opportunity for people from all backgrounds to meet and have a fun day whist learning about Brazilian Culture.

 Created by the not-for-profit organization BraCCA – The Brazilian Community Council of Australia, the 12th Ritmo Brazilian Festival happens this Sunday at the Tumbalong Park (Darling Harbour) and promises to be a fun day of free entertainment and another example of celebration of Australia’s unique cultural diversity.

Filled with music, dance and Brazilian cuisine, people from all backgrounds will join the party and be able to listen to Juliana Areias and Marcio Mendes in concert for the first time thanks to Edith Cowan University, OiExchange and Brazil WA.

Their repertoire is still a surprise, but the smoking musicians will certainly bring along with them the hottest and originally Brazilian moves and grooves from the sands of the beautiful beaches of the state that nurtures their talent, Western Australia.

Back at the Ellington

After the success of her latest concerts at the Fremantle Festival, Sunset @ Subi  and her premiere night at the Ellington, Juliana was back at the Ellington with  her authentic Brazilian voice, great stage presence, groove and charisma on 8 June.

The audience rolled up for a stunning night of classic and contemporary bossa, samba, fusions, originals and improvisations featuring some of Perth’s most versatile musicians: guitarist Glenn Rogers, bassist Matt Bell and drummer Michael Boase – creating a new ‘Ginga’.

Ginga is a Brazilian word that describes the signature element, the malleable bilateral motion and spirit that Brazilians present in everyday life – always keeping in rhythm.

Ginga Brazil Concert repertoire embraced several shades of the Brazilian music spectrum and its resonance upon jazz and other international musical styles. Performing compositions by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Pixinguinha, Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, Joao Bosco, Ivan Lins, Djavan, Joyce, Ceu, Lenine and Arlindo Cruz; the concert also brough original tunes composed by Juliana with local and international music partners around the world.

Roll up for a stunning afternoon of classic and contemporary bossa, samba, fusions, originals and improvisations in the latest sunset@subi concert featuring Juliana Areias Brazilian chanteuse.

Juliana teams up with some of Perth’s most versatile musicians including guitarist Glenn Rogers, bassist Adam Springhetti, percussionist Marcio Mendes and drummer Mike Boase, creating a new ‘Ginga’.

Ginga is a Brazilian word that describes the signature element, the malleable bilateral motion and spirit that Brazilians present in everyday life – always keeping in rhythm. Juliana Areias’ career, centred on traditional Brazilian music, includes a performance at the revered Montreux Jazz Festival.

The Ginga Brazil Concert repertoire embraces several shades of the Brazilian music spectrum and its resonance upon jazz and other international musical styles. Performing compositions by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Pixinguinha, Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, Joao Bosco, Ivan Lins, Djavan, Joyce and Lenine; the concert also brings original tunes composed by Juliana with local and international music partners around the world.

While living in New Zealand, Juliana performed at the Auckland Festival and worked for the University of Auckland as a Brazilian music expert. Her official debut in Perth happened in 2009, a full house concert at Kulcha, performing with the local band Aquarela and afterwards creating the So Brazil Duo with the Brazilian guitarist/ bassist Jose Henrique Alves; performing at Live@Woodside and the Chilli Festival in 2009, and at the Sculptures by the Sea Exhibition in Cottesloe Beach in 2010.

Juliana said, “I am glad to be part of sunset@subi and having the opportunity of celebrating music, Subi, summer, nature, outdoor living and cultural diversity all at once. What a great idea! I am looking forward to it!”

Juliana Areias performs this Sunday 6 February at Lake Jualbup, Shenton Park, from 5pm to 7pm.

The sunset@subi series is a free community concert series that covers a mix of themes and genres suitable for all ages. The series runs every Sunday through to 27 February, excluding 19 and 26 December at various parks and gardens within the City of Subiaco. The Oasis in the middle of the week.

The end of the year brings the end of some projects and the prospective of new ones in the way.

Juliana  Areias made her last performance at the Ocean One Bar on 24 November 2010. She had performed at the venue every Wednesday night for over 10 months, attracting a devoted public of music lovers who were avid for a pleasant alternative of entertainment in the Perth Night Scene.

These regular performances were defined as “The oasis in the middle of the week” by Juliana Areias’ fans who were always there to get  inspired and vitalised by her music.

For Juliana Areias it also represented a live opportunity to create a musical lab, where she could share and experiment new songs, new ideas, new rhythms, new fusions and sonorities every week.

She says: “Thanks to the public who came to appreciate our music. Thanks to all friends and musicians for their enthusiasm and talent. Thanks to Ocean One team and sponsors for supporting the project. We all had a great and special time.”

Juliana Areias Band has recently performed at the Fremantle Festival 2010 and is already booked to perform at the Sunset @ Subi Series on 2011.
