In a Christmas mood, time to relax for a sec and indulge yourself in a sensuous bossa nova way. Brazilian Singer Juliana Areias’ last public concert of the year in Perth prior she heads to Adelaide for a New Year’s Eve Celebration.

An intimate performance full of sway and delicious subtleties sharing the stage with finest Australian Guitarist Mark Shanahan and Brazilian Multi instrumentalist Leandro Cezarino ( guitar, cavaquinho and percussion).

In the concert repertoire, classic and contemporary bossa, samba, baiao and maracatus by master composers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Baden Powell, Joao Bosco, Guinga ,Djavan, Joyce, Lenine and Maria Gadu – as well as a breathtaking selection of French, Italian , Spanish and Jazz tunes including the swing standards “Autumn Leaves” (Les feuilles mortes) and “I wish your love” (Que reste-t-il de nos amours ); plus surprising jazzy makeover of Pop tunes such as The Beatles’ “Stand by me”, Police’s “ Every breath you take” and Kate’s Perry’s “Firework” – all performed with an irresistible bossa nova accent.

Known as The Bossa Nova Baby – a nickname given by Brazilian journalist Ruy Castro (author of Bossa Nova’s history book Chega de Saudade) – Juliana’s love for this seductive music evolved into a desire to become a professional singer after meeting and learning directly from some of its creators.

Juliana Areias’ career includes a performance at the revered Montreux Jazz Festival. Her authentic Brazilian voice, sense of groove, engaging charisma and a very personal and passionate stage presence are trademarks of her work.

As the name suggests , the concert showcases Juliana’s singular sense of rhythm, authentic musicality and interpretation of bossa & samba classics, meeting contemporary Brazilian Popular Music & original favorites, in an explicit jazz format, context and perspective.

Lighting up the bonfire of the heart

Following the success of over a year of consecutive sold out concerts, Brazilian singer Juliana Areias is back to the Ellington presenting a new ablaze “hot” show.

From exciting arrangements of bossa nova and samba classics such as The Girl from Ipanema and Mas que nada, Juliana invites the audience to dive into a deeper musical trip to the “five corners” of Brazil, presenting a wider spectrum of its traditional and contemporary rhythmic diversity:

– ‪The “Carimbo” sounds of the ‬Amazon Forest (North);

– ‪The contrasting sounds that comes from the sertao (Brazilian “desert”) and from the sea coast – baiao (“forro”), coco, repente, ciranda, samba de roda, maracatu, afoxe – particularly from Bahia and Pernambuco (North East);‬

– ‪The Baroque/ Spanish/Arabic/Gypsy influences in Minas Gerais music and Urban Babel vibration of ‬Rio and Sao Paulo (Southeast).

– ‪The Guarani indigenous influence of the “Guarania” in ‬Pantanal Forest (West Central) and;

– ‪The European Folkloric influences (South);‬

The concert is primordially inspired by the colourful Brazilian Annual Winter Festivities where everybody get together to have fun and dance around bonfires.

Lighting up the night, Juliana shares the stage with an exclusive line up of musicians: 3 authentic Brazilian Multi instrumentalists Marcio Mendes ( percussion / musical direction) , the young talent Leandro Cezarino ( guitar/ Cavaquinho) and directly from Brazil for his first performance in Australia, Rafael Abdalla ( bass /  double bass); plus Perth’s own beautiful and young talent Nikki Dagostino (accordion).

Due to the high demand and incredible success of  Juliana Areias – Born to Samba Concert on 7 February, she is back to celebrate and create her own carnival in Perth, bringing to the Ellington Jazz Club a taste of this unique atmosphere again. Here comes the sun – Sunset Songs Series – Every Thursday @ The Kiosk Floreat Beach

Summer brings Juliana Areias back to her original element and stage: the beach sands.

This year accompanied by guitarist Mark Shanahan, the duo presents The Sunset Songs – A refreshing selection of sensuous Bossa,  Samba, Beatles and  French Jazz  tunes performed with Brazilian passion and accent. From 5/1/2012, every Thursday at the Kiosk – Floreat Beach –  6-7.30pm ( Challenger Parade). Free Entry.
