Welcome to Bahia, the Bay of all rhythms! Award-winning Brazilian singer-songwriter – Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, invites you on a musical voyage to the first capital of Brazil, where samba and most of Brazilian music styles and fusions were born: bossa nova, samba-de-roda, afro-sambas, tropicalia, capoeira, afoxe, samba-reggae and carnaval. In the late 90s Juliana Areias lived in Salvador, Bahia’s capital, where colourful big drums are played in the streets and ladies still dress in the traditional African clothes made famous by the 1940s Hollywood star Carmen Miranda.
The Bahia of all rhythms concert will feature iconic songs about the heavenly beach of Itapuan, (where Juliana used to live and started her singing career); mythic creatures such as Yemanja, (the Afro-Brazilian Goddess of the Sea); African slave cultural contributions and the happiness of the Carnaval of Bahia. Juliana Areias will perform afhrodisiac Bahia related bossa and afro-sambas by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Baden Powell and Ary Barroso – to authentic tunes from Bahian artists such as Joao Gilberto, Dorival Caymmi, Assis Valente, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Tom Zé, Gal Costa, Maria Bethania, Rosa Passos, Carlinhos Brown, Olodum, A Cor do Som, Novos Baianos, Roberto Mendes, Jorge Portugal and Raul Seixas as well as a few originals from Juliana’s internationally-acclaimed Bossa Nova Baby album also inspired by Bahia.

“Ned Kelly & Maria Bonita” dancing together in our tableau vivant*… symbolising Australian and Brazilian cultures connecting and our statement of art rather than violence.
Maria Bonita has multiple and complex meanings to me. She embodies the paradigm of what it is to be a woman and the challenges faced only by women.
Like Ned, Maria Bonita was a bushranger captured and killed by the police. Her head was cut off and exhibited as trophy, along with the heads of her whole band, lead by her partner Virgulino Lampiao. But Maria Bonita’s body was the only one violated with a stick into her vagina. Why? Because she was a daring and powerful woman. Therefore, her dead body “deserved” extra humiliation and punishment.
I particularly thought about Maria Bonita this week for two very different reasons:
1. A male anaesthetist in Brazil was recently caught in the act of raping his patient, who was there to give birth to her baby by Caesarian. It shows that the potential for violence against women has no limit and that not much has changed since Maria Bonita’s time. A shocking reality all too close to Almodovar’s surreal film “Talk to her” – one that keeps happening every day.
2. This week is my mother’s birthday. She was initially cast to play the role of Maria Bonita in Globo TV’s first mini series in 1982, but ended up losing the role to Tania Alves – an already well known theatre actor-singer. Despite all the challenges and prejudices she faced, my mother – who has schizophrenia – has raised three kids with very little help. Thank you Mamae, happy birthday to you! Thanks to you here we are!
Every year during winter in Brazil we have our Folk Festival where we celebrate the culture, music and food of Brazil’s northeastern outback, where Maria Bonita came from. A version of this special Folk Festival will be happening in Perth this Sat 16 July at the Mess Hall – The BrazilWA July Fest. I will be there singing as a special guest and paying my respect as a woman and artist to Maria Bonita, my mother and to all women facing unique challenges every day.
Brazil WA – The Brazilian Association of Western Australia Inc, was founded on International Women’s day over 10 years ago, by four daring women: Eliane, Cema, Ester and myself. Thank you to all presidents and members for keeping it alive- Eliane, Wilson, Carlos, Cema and Raquel. Viva João Gilberto! 90 years since he was born. Without Joao, the song “Chega de Saudade”, could be a lost samba cancao that Jobim & Vinicius forgot in a drawer. We are glad they met, and it became the very first Bossa Nova song ever recorded in 1958! Here is our sweet tribute to João, who keeps influencing new generations around the globe with his voice and guitar.
Now that the pandemic is starting to be under control, we with our Bossa Nova Baby Band hope that we can start to tour again around Australia, Brazil, USA, New Zealand, Japan, Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa… anywhere our music and tributes can be appreciated. Award-winning Brazilian singer Juliana Areias and her Bossa Nova Baby Band invites you to celebrate the music of Elis Regina – Brazil’s most loved voice.
Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) would not be the same if Elis Regina hadn’t discovered and given voice to so many new composers. She was among the first mainstream artist to champion the works of an up-and-coming generation of Brazilian songwriters, including many that had their songs censored by the Brazilian Military Dictatorship – Edu Lobo, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, João Bosco, Ivan Lins, Joyce, Rita Lee. Elis’s rendition of João Bosco and Aldir Blanc’s “O Bêbado e o Equilibrista,” became the anthem of Brazil’s political amnesty movement, as the days of the junta drew to a close in 1984. At the same time, she was probably the finest-and most loyal interpreter of the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Bossa Nova’s most defining composer, immortalising many of his songs including “Waters of March”.
Elis Regina signed her first recording contract at the age of fifteen at her hometown of Porto Alegre, in South Brazil, and by 1965 had relocated to Rio and taken Brazil and the world by storm, with triumphant performances such as her Montreux Jazz Festival Concert 1979, TV shows and 30 albums released included the iconic “Elis & Tom”, with Antonio Calos Jobim.
It has been 40 years since Elis tragically died in 1982 of an overdose – mother of three and aged only 36. Yet the beauty of her work keeps inspiring the following generations, including her children; music producer João Marcello Boscolli and singers Pedro Mariano and Maria Rita.

Two thirds of the population of the City of Stirling comes from a diverse background and it is beautiful to see how much this is valued and celebrated by its local government! Last weekend, the true colours of generosity, femininity, plurality, friendship and the arts were present at the magical Brazilian Divas Concert – a celebration of International Women’s Day, at The Scarborough Amphitheatre last Saturday 12 March 2022. This free open air concert at the heart of Scarborough Beach (City of Stirling) featured Juliana Areias with her Bossa Nova Baby Band , plus over 20 female singers and performers as her special guests – celebrating the International Women’s Day as well as the extraordinary diversity and talent we have in Western Australia.

Juliana Areias – Bossa Nova Baby Band is composed by a blazing line-up of sensational musicians – showcasing the amazing talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth. Juliana is honoured to share the stage on this musical journey to the Feminine Universe with the grooviest cats in town: Paul Millard – sax/flute, Joshua de Silva – seven string hybrid guitars, Filipe Rimis – drums, and percussionist Rafael Medeiro de Souza. The band has been performing together for almost 4 years, although some of the members – Paul Millard and drummer Bronton Ainsworth – have been together with Juliana Areias already for 12 years. All together they have enchanted audiences with multiple sold-out performances at The Ellington Jazz Club, Perth Festival, Jazz by the Beach Festival, WAM Festival, Harmony Week, Fremantle Arts Centre, Mandurah Performing Arts Centre and 2022 New Year Event at Indigo Oscar (Indiana House – iconic Cottesloe landmark).

Indigenous Australian Jazz legend Lois Olney is Juliana Areias’s special guest of honour at “Brazilian Divas” – free concert at Scarborough Amphitheatre a celebration of International Women’s Day – this Saturday 12 March 2022 6pm.
A singer with a distinctive, blues-bound style, she is a unique storyteller and a symbol of resilience having faced a number of personal challenges in her life.
Lois was born in her mother’s country at Roebourne, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Her father was a Yamatji man from Meekatharra. Her story is of the stolen generation and reconnection to family and culture. For Lois, healing the wounds of stolen generation is a life long journey, but as she shares in her story, “music helps heal the people that I love and the sorrow that we all have in common.”
Lois Olney and Juliana Areias performed together at the Western Australian of the Year 2021 Ceremony as soloists of The Perth Symphony Orchestra. At Brazilian Divas, Lois Olney will be accompanied by her guitarist Dave Johnson.
Victoria Newton
Western Australian Lady of Jazz and UK Pop Star Victoria Newton is Juliana Areias’s special guest at “Brazilian Divas” – free concert at Scarborough Amphitheatre a celebration of International Women’s Day – this Saturday 12 March 2022, 6pm.
Recognised as one of the most exciting and dynamic singers on the WA & London jazz scene, Victoria Newton has appeared at many festivals including The London International Jazz Festival, The Soho Jazz Festival and at The Perth Internacional Jazz Festival. However one of Victoria’s favorite gigs to date has been performing Brazilian music whilst cruising up the Amazon! Victoria also had a cheeky stint as a pop star in the mid 1990s with UK dance/pop group, Strike and their massive hit ‘U Sure Do’. The success of this single followed by 4 UK top 40 hits and the critically acclaimed album ‘I Saw the Future’ saw a whirlwind of TV appearances including MTV and BBC’s Top of the Pops, and touring to many countries around the world.
Victoria Newton and Juliana Areias have performed together at The Kings Park Festival and The Ellington Jazz Club. At Brazilian Divas, they will be together on stage again presenting a tribute to one of their favourite female Brazilian singer-composers.
Brenda Lee
Australian-Eurasian Lady of Jazz, Brenda Lee is Juliana Areias’s special guest at “Brazilian Divas” – free concert at Scarborough Amphitheatre a celebration of International Women’s Day – this Saturday 12 March 2022, 6pm.
A descend of Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, and Irish ancestors, Brenda Lee was born in Kuala Lumpur and grew up in historical Portuguese speaking Malacca before relocating to Perth, Australia in her early teens. Trained as a jazz vocalist at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Brenda has traveled and performed in Sydney, Kuala Lumpur, New York and Canada with a diverse range of established jazz artists around the globe.
Brenda Lee and Juliana Areias have co-produced concerts including “ The Ladies of Latin Jazz at St George’s College Quad – UWA, and “Coraçao” at The Ellington Jazz Club and Fremantle Jazz Club. At Brazilian Divas, they will perform together one of their favourite Brazilian samba hits of all times.
Banda Ziriguidum
Female Drumming Group Banda Ziriguidum is Juliana Areias’s special guest at “Brazilian Divas” – free concert at Scarborough Amphitheatre a celebration of International Women’s Day – this Saturday 12 March 2022, 6pm.
Banda Ziriguidum was born in 2012 in Salvador, Bahia when its founders – Sandrinha Barbosa, Karen Hill, Miranda Wiltshire and Claire Hegarty visited Brazil during Carnaval.
Inspired by Brazilian most iconic female drumming group “Banda Dida”, Banda Ziriguidum deeply believes in the power of women and cultural diversity. The band is currently composed by women from 10 different countries: Brazil, England , Australia, Japan, Argentina, Mexico, Seychelles and France and Mauritius; and their youngest player Bianca Costa is 12 years old. Others members of the band are: Brigitte Underwood Legeron, Rikki Walsh, Aartee Vindetzis, Emilie Miesch, Denise Salomao, Laila Santos Oliveira, Jimena Garcia Vega, Patricia Costa, Bianca Costa.
Ziriguidum and Juliana Areias will perform for the very first time together at The Brazilian Divas concert, a dream about to come true. This presentation will also features their special guest and instructor Fabio Macarrao. They will present a tribute to Bahia and the Afro-Brazilian rhythms and Orixas.
Mariah HLatywayo
Extraordinary Gospel-Jazz singer-composer Mariah HLatywayo is Juliana Areias’s special guest at “Brazilian Divas” – free concert at Scarborough Amphitheatre a celebration of International Women’s Day – this Saturday 12 March 2022, 6pm.
Mariah Hlatywayo is a singer songwriter and drummer from Perth, WA. Inspired by her upbringing in a musical family and studies as a jazz vocalist at The Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts, her songs are a mix of jazz and gospel harmonies with infectious Latin American rhythms that are sure to get you dancing and singing along. Mariah’s debut single ‘My One and Only One Jesus’ was released on the 18th of November, 2021. It draws on her own life experiences and Christian faith to uplift and encourage people from all walks of life.
Mariah Hlatywayo and Juliana Areias have previously performed together at The Ellington Jazz Club. At Brazilian Divas, they will present a tribute to Bossa Nova also featuring Mariah’s brother Joshua de Silva on vocals and seven string guitar.
Danielle de Silva
One of Perth’s greatest new talents Australian-Sri-Lankan singer-songwriter Danielle de Silva is Juliana Areias’s special guest at “Brazilian Divas” – free concert at Scarborough Amphitheatre a celebration of International Women’s Day – this Saturday 12 March 2022, 6pm.
Danielle de Silva’s melodic voice and heartfelt songs are inspired by human expression, personal experience and faith. This 21 years old full artist has recently graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) with a Diploma in Contemporary Performance(2020) and released her debut single titled, ‘The Player,’ in March 2021. She performed for the WAM festival 2021 and she presents regular concerts at The Lyrics Underground, The Bird and other music venues around WA.
Danielle de Silva and Juliana Areias have previously performed together at The Ellington Jazz Club. At Brazilian Divas, they will present a beautiful samba by Arlindo Cruz called “Meu Lugar” (My Place).
Luciana Negroni
Brazilian-Australian soulful gospel singer Luciana Negroni is Juliana Areias’s special guest at “Brazilian Divas” – free concert at Scarborough Amphitheatre a celebration of International Women’s Day – this Saturday 12 March 2022, 6pm.
Luciana Negroni formed her Pop Gospel Duo with guitarist Jonas Viana in Perth in 2008, when she arrived from Brazil. After living in Adelaide for many years where she performed with award-winning “Gospo Collective” (Australia’s leading Vocal Powerhouse Gospel Choir) and with “Sounds of Brazil” at Adelaide Fringe Festival and other festivals and events, Luciana Negroni, is finally back in WA.
Luciana Negroni and Juliana Areias have performed together at The Ellington Jazz Club and at Juliana Areias very first concert in Australia in 2009. At Brazilian Divas, they will present a tribute to Brazilian Female singer-songwriter Adriana Calcanhoto.
Renata Garcia de Melo
Brazilian singer, guitar & ukulele player Renata Garcia de Melo is Juliana Areias’s special guest at “Brazilian Divas” – free concert at Scarborough Amphitheatre a celebration of International Women’s Day – this Saturday 12 March 2022, 6pm.
Renata Garcia de Melo has been dedicating her multiple talents as an artist and teacher to inspire waves of kids in Australia to experience and learn Brazilian music, culture and Portuguese language at Projeto Cabana and at her weekly Roda de Musica” at Kings Park Project. She has also performed at major events of the Brazilian Community including Brazil WA “Festa Junina” Winter Festival and at the 2nd and 3th productions of “Saltimbancos” – Brazilian’s most loved kids play.
Renata Garcia de Melo and Juliana Areias have previously performed together at Juliana Areias – Sunset Songs at North Cottesloe Series. At Brazilian Divas, they will present a tribute to Marisa Montes – one of the most important contemporary Brazilian artists.
Viviane Coentro & Mari Mazzio
Exuberant Brazilian actors Viviane Coentro & Mari Mazzio are Juliana Areias’s special guests at “Brazilian Divas” – free concert at Scarborough Amphitheatre a celebration of International Women’s Day – this Saturday 12 March 2022, 6pm.
Known in the WA Brazilian Community and beyond as our super doula Vivi & super event producer Mari, these two super cat women can transform themselves in anything they like. They have over two decades of experience in storytelling and acting as a circus-street-stage-television-videoclip-film performers in Brazil, Europe and Australia.
In 2020 they staged together in Perth “As Saltimbancas”, directed by Eduardo de Franca, bringing a new female perspective and metalanguage (theatre inside the theatre) to the iconic kids play “Os Saltimbancos” which was already produced 3 times in Perth, with Juliana Areias, Viviane Coentro and Mari Mazzio playing the cat character respectively in each production.
