Award-winning Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, known as the “Bossa Nova Baby,” invites you to dance and celebrate the incredible music, life, and irreverent free spirit of Rita Lee. Rita Lee was a Brazilian superstar singer-songwriter with a career spanning over 50 years, who unfortunately passed away from cancer on May 8, 2023, at the age of 75.
Rita Lee’s eclectic music combines sunny Latin jazz rhythms with psychedelic guitars, smooth bossa-like vocals, and a witty mix of romantic, feminist, and transgressive ideas – all delivered with an elegance rarely found in pop music.
Having sold over 60 million albums worldwide, Rita Lee is considered the greatest musical exponent of São Paulo, Latin America’s largest city with a population exceeding 20 million. Both Rita Lee and Juliana Areias were born and raised in São Paulo, close to Paulista Avenue. The very first song Juliana Areias ever sung in public was a Rita Lee song, the same one that Prince Charles of England (now King) declared as his favorite song of all time. Bossa Nova creator João Gilberto also recorded with Rita Lee, and every iconic Brazilian recording artist since the 60s has performed her tunes. For decades, Rita Lee sang about the beauty of women’s freedom of expression, sexuality, pleasures, desires, and aspirations – well before Madonna and Lady Gaga hit the scene.
The concert will feature selections from Rita Lee’s greatest hits, including the infectious “Lanca Perfume” (Perfume Spray – King Charles’s favorite tune), “Ovelha Negra” (Black Sheep), “Doce Vampiro” (Sweet Vampire), “Mutante” (Changeable), “Nem Lixo, nem Lixo” (Neither Luxury nor Rubbish), as well as a few of her Beatles arrangements and collaborations with other major Brazilian composers and singers such as Cazuza, Zelia Duncan, Ed Motta, and Paulo Coelho (bestselling author of The Alchemist).

Award-winning Brazilian singer Juliana Areias and her Bossa Nova Baby Band invites you to celebrate the music of Elis Regina – Brazil’s most loved voice.
Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) would not be the same if Elis Regina hadn’t discovered and given voice to so many new composers. She was among the first mainstream artist to champion the works of an up-and-coming generation of Brazilian songwriters, including many that had their songs censored by the Brazilian Military Dictatorship – Edu Lobo, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, João Bosco, Ivan Lins, Joyce, Rita Lee. Elis’s rendition of João Bosco and Aldir Blanc’s “O Bêbado e o Equilibrista,” became the anthem of Brazil’s political amnesty movement, as the days of the junta drew to a close in 1984. At the same time, she was probably the finest-and most loyal interpreter of the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Bossa Nova’s most defining composer, immortalising many of his songs including “Waters of March”.
Elis Regina signed her first recording contract at the age of fifteen at her hometown of Porto Alegre, in South Brazil, and by 1965 had relocated to Rio and taken Brazil and the world by storm, with triumphant performances such as her Montreux Jazz Festival Concert 1979, TV shows and 30 albums released included the iconic “Elis & Tom”, with Antonio Calos Jobim.
It has been 41 years since Elis tragically died in 1982 of an overdose – mother of three and aged only 36. Yet the beauty of her work keeps inspiring the following generations, including her children; music producer João Marcello Boscolli and singers Pedro Mariano and Maria Rita.
To honour and celebrate Elis’ music and life, Juliana Areias is excited to share the stage with her Bossa Nova Baby Band, comprising the grooviest cats in town; Paul Millard – sax/flute, Joshua de Silva – seven string hybrid guitar, Bronton Ainsworth – drums, and percussionist Rafael Medeiro de Souza.

The year has started in full swing with Juliana Areias’ Sunset Songs & Jobim Songbook Concerts, as well as her recent performances on International Women’s Day (along with violinist Emily Gelineau Band and jazz singers Jessie Gordon and Simone Craddock) and her superb presentation at The Joondalup Festival this week, as part of the celebrations of Harmony Week in Western Australia.

Award-winning Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias presents “Flying Guitars”, featuring the magical sounds of Brazil in the perfect combination of voice, percussion and two fabulously inventive guitars – together performing iconic songs from the country of bossa nova, samba and carnaval – for the first time at the Ellington Jazz Club.

For this exceptional concert, Juliana Areias has assembled a blazing line-up of sensational musicians and special guests – showcasing the amazing talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth. Juliana Areias is honoured to share the stage on this sensuous musical journey with the grooviest cats in town: Australian-SriLankan seven-string guitarist Joshua de Silva from WAAPA, together with French-Canadian guitarist Shon Boublil from Berklee, plus Brazilian percussionist Rafael Medeiros de Souza and Australian drummer Bronton Ainsworth. Their musical chemistry has developed while performing together over two consecutive summers at Juliana Areias’ Sunset Songs Concert Series and at the recent George Street Festival. An afternoon celebration of the work of Brazilian writer João Guimarães Rosa, literary translation, creative writing and Brazilian music.
In 1965 João Guimarães Rosa published Grande Sertão: Veredas, Brazil’s most iconic work of literature, written in a blend of backlands dialect and made-up language. The award-winning Australian literary translator Alison Entrekin is working on a new English-language translation of this literary masterpiece with the support of the Itaú Cultural and the Australia Council.
Join Alison for a talk on this most innovative of writers, and then get creative in a “transcreation” workshop (translation + creative writing), in which participants recreate passages of this work in English. No knowledge of Portuguese is required and support materials will be provided.
Afterwards, enjoy a late-afternoon snack and take in the beautiful woodland setting of the Fellowship of Australian Writers WA’s Mattie Furphy House as the award-winning Juliana Areias performs Brazilian music.

After being officially acknowledged as a “Global Distinguished Talent” by Australia, Perth’s own award winning Brazilian singer-songwriter – Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, invites you on a magic musical voyage.
Hoist the colours high and set your imagination free! The Oceano concert will feature songs about the seven seas, iconic beaches, mythic creatures, lost treasures and tales of Neptune, Poseidon, Yemanja, sirens, mermaids, pirates, fish-men, African slave ships and Atlantis’s mysteries.
Dive into Brazil’s most evocative rhythms – bossa, samba, baiao, afoxe, maracatu, and samba-jazz fusions – featuring fresh arrangement of classics such as “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Beyond the Sea” (“La Mer”) as well as alluring songs by iconic Brazilian artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Djavan, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Alceu Valença, Tim Maia, Maria Gadu, Marina, Lenine, Lulu Santos, Marisa Montes, Ceu, Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo.
The concert will also reference Christiane Anu’s iconic rendition of Warumpi Band’s Australian song “My Island Home” and UK artists who influenced Juliana Areias when she lived in Europe during the 90’s – David Byrne’s record with Caetano Veloso “Dreamworld – Red Hot” (1998) and Smoke City’s record “Underwater Love” (1997) – as well as Madonna’s 1989 hit “Cherish” which includes a line from 1966 “Cherish” by California band “The Association”.
Aboard with Juliana for this musical adventure are her captains of groove, showcasing the amazing young talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth: Joshua de Silva (guitar), Paul Millard (sax/flute), Bronton Ainsworth (drums) and Rafael Medeiros de Souza (percussion).
Juliana Areias has performed on major stages internationally including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro. Dubbed the “Bossa Nova Baby” by iconic Brazilian journalist Ruy Castro, her original album “Bossa Nova Baby” won “Best Brazilian Album” at the US Focus Brazil Awards in 2019 and spent five weeks in the US Top 100 Jazz Charts. Juliana has also been nominated five times for Western Australian Music Awards including Best World Music Act and Best Song.

POLITICS AND BOSSA NOVA– AIIA Event – Monday 7 Nov 2022
Last night, We had a wonderful event dedicated to Brazil’s Democracy future. Thank you AIIA WA and super Political Scientist Flavia Bellieni Zimmermann for the fantastic evening, and for the pleasure to be part of it.
On 30 Oct 2022, I voted against Bolsonaro and so did the majority of the Brazilians voters. Our votes must be respected, this is democracy. Coping Trump style, Bolsonaro and his fanatic supporters are shamefully not accepting the democratic results. There is no acceptable excuse for it.
Since I was a child, the songs that come to my mind every day reviews my feelings and state of spirit. Since the official results of the the 2022 Brazilian Presidential election was announced, where Brazilian democratic candidate Lula won, defeating Brazilian autocratic Bolsonaro, this is the song that has been in my mind. It was a joy to perform it for the first time last night Monday 7 Nov 2022. See the song’s translation below

Perth based Brazilian singer and songwriter, Juliana Areias, the Bossa Nova Baby – is granted a Global Distinguished Talent Visa in Australia in the year she celebrates 15 years of living in Perth and 25 years of living outside Brazil. Catch her next concert “Juliana Areias – Viva Brazil” on Saturday 24 August at The Ellington Jazz Club.
It was way back at the end of February 2020, when just before catching a plane to perform in Singapore, that Juliana Areias ran with partner Geoffrey Drake-Brockman and her kids Jobim and Lilas to the Post Office to send her over 400 page long application requesting that to be granted a Global Distinguished Talent Visa in Australia (Permanent Resident Visa Subclass 858). That morning she could not predict that a pandemic would shake the world and that it would also delay the outcome of her application.
The Global Distinguished Talent Visa – subclass 858 is a permanent visa for people who have an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in an eligible field of arts, sport, academia, research or the professions. To demonstrate this exceptional and outstanding achievement in her field of Bossa Nova and Brazilian Music locally, nationally and internationally, Areias had to submit a huge application consisting of newspaper reviews, articles, interviews, plus award confirmations, tours photos and support letters from APRA AMCOS, WAM, Brazilian diplomats, music producers, academics, and key Brazilian Jazz music experts and musicians in Australia, Brazil, USA, Europe and Japan – who were all keen to recognise her work as relevant in the Global Contemporary Brazilian Jazz – Bossa Nova Musical Movement – including Bossa Nova icon Roberto Menescal and famous Brazilian journalist Ruy Castro who nicked named Juliana Areias – Bossa Nova Baby since in her teenage years.
While waiting for the application result and the “normality” to be restored, like all artists in Western Australia, Juliana kept working locally, respecting the closed borders. During this two year plus period she developed over 12 different thematic concerts for The Ellington Jazz Club, countless outdoor Sunset Songs performances at North Cottesloe Beach and Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre and performed at The Perth Festival, at the Western Australian of The Year Ceremony with The Perth Symphony Orchestra and at The Perth Concert Hall with The WACO Philharmonic Orchestra. Yet she was afraid that the application would not be accepted because of the pandemic’s effects – making the future very uncertain for independent artists like her.
Juliana celebrates: “You can imagine how overjoyed I felt when I received the visa approval news. This is monumental for me not only because it benefits my career by giving recognition of my work as a composer and singer – but on many other levels as well. It brings me a very strong symbol of acceptance and belonging. It means that Australia values my contribution to the arts and cultural diversity. It also means that both my kids Jobim and Lilas are now permanent residents of Australia due to their mum’s work as an independent artist. Symbols are so important.”
“This news marks 15 years since I moved from New Zealand to Australia with my kids and 25 years since I left Brazil to perform abroad, when I was 21 years old. Now my son Jobim is 20 and my daughter Lilas is 16. Although the three of us have New Zealand passports which means we can live and work here in Australia indefinitely (special category visa for kiwis – subclass 444) – without needing to have a Permanent Residence Visa, and although I also could have applied for Partner Permanent Residence Visa via Geoffrey, which is a much easier visa option. I did not want to do so, because that option just didn’t seem romantic to me and because I would much rather give my kids an example based on my artistic work and achievements. I thought that applying for the Global Distinguished Talent Visa, – a much more difficult visa especially when you do it without any immigration agent’s help – would be the best way to show to my kids the recognized value of the arts. Of course, Geoffrey’s love, help and support was also pivotal in this entire process.”
This news also comes just before Juliana Areias next concert at the Ellington, “Viva Brazil” on Sat 24 Sept 2022 – a celebration of the 200 years of Brazilian Independence and music.
