Award-winning Brazilian Jazz singer-songwriter Juliana Areias was personally introduced to the Bossa Nova founders when she was a teenager by the legendary Brazilian music historian and journalist Ruy Castro who also named her “The Bossa Nova Baby”. This direct contact with the bossa masters inspired her to become a professional singer and songwriter.
Living in Perth since 2007, Juliana Areias celebrates the 3rd consecutive year of her Sunset Songs at North Cottesloe project: “It has been my dream come true to sing gentle bossa nova and bring a bit of the Copacabana 60’s atmosphere to North Cottesloe, my favourite beach in Perth, the place I love to call home. North Cottesloe in many ways is more beautiful than iconic beaches such as Malibu, Bondi, Copacabana and Ipanema. It is wonderful to see that our Sunset Songs Series have been contributing to enhance this perception”.
Recently considered as a Distinguished Global talent by Australia, Juliana Areias has performed on major stages around the world including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro. Dubbed the “Bossa Nova Baby” by iconic Brazilian journalist Ruy Castro, her original album “Bossa Nova Baby” won “Best Brazilian Album” at the US Focus Brazil Awards in 2019 and spent five weeks in the US Top 100 Jazz Charts. Juliana has also been nominated five times for Western Australian Music Awards including Best World Music Act and Best Song.
