Roll-up for an entrancing night of rhythms and sultry songs from the country of bossa nova, samba and carnival with Perth’s own Brazilian singer-songwriter and best album released in the USA award winner – Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”.
Juliana Areias invites you to indulge your senses, savouring the perfect match between samba and jazz and celebrating some of the most iconic Brazilian songs, interpreters and composers of all time. From fresh arrangements of bossa and samba classic recordings such “One Note Samba” (by Jobim – Getz/Gilberto) and “Mas que Nada” (by Jorge Benjor – Sergio Mendes Brazil 66) – to new compositions Juliana’s band is preparing for her forthcoming album – the “Samba-Jazz It Up Concert” will also pay tribute to masters and divas of Brazilian Jazz, including Elis Regina, Leny Andrade, Rosa Passos, Tamba Trio, Simonal, Baden Powell, Joao Donato, Johnny Alf, Robero Menescal, Carlinhos Lyra and Antonio Adolfo – and the ways their music has inspired other artists including; Steve Wonder, Esperanza Spalding, Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock, George Benson, Sade, Sting, Ivan Lins, Joyce, Djavan, Joao Bosco, Gilberto Gil, Gozaguinha, Marisa Montes, Ceu, Maria Rita, Simoninha, Marvio Ciribelli and of course, Juliana Areias herself.
For this vibrant concert, Juliana Areias has assembled a blazing line-up of sensational musicians and special guests – showcasing the amazing talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth. Juliana is honoured to share the stage on this musical journey with the grooviest cats in town; Paul Millard – sax/flute, Joshua de Silva – seven string hybrid guitar and percussionist Rafael Medeiro de Souza.
Juliana Areias has performed on major stages internationally including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro. In Perth some of her iconic performances include: Koort Boodja – Heartland 2022 at the Perth Concert Hall with West Coast Philharmonic Orquestra, Perth Festival, Kings Park Festival, Perth International Jazz Festival and at the Western Australian of the Year Ceremony 2021 with The Perth Symphony Orchestra.
Dubbed the “Bossa Nova Baby” by iconic Brazilian journalist Ruy Castro, her original album “Bossa Nova Baby” won “Best Brazilian Album” at the US Focus Brazil Awards in 2019 and spent five weeks in the US Top 100 Jazz Charts. Voted in the Top 5 Brazilian Singers around the world at the Best of Brazil Global Awards 2021 in London, Juliana has also been nominated five times for Western Australian Music Awards including Best World Music Act and Best Song.
