All of us, guided by the beautifully colourful vision and extraordinary talent of maestro Sam Parry and his WACO team who’s mission statement is to change lives through music! Bravissimo!!! “Tupi or not Tupi? That is the question” that was made by Brazilian modernist author Oswald de Andrade at his “Antropophagite Manifest” in 1928. This week marks the centenary of the 1922 “Modern Art Week of São Paulo”, when artists with “vanguard aspirations” such as Oswald de Andrade and composer Heitor Villas-Lobos got together to think and discuss how Brazilian culture and the arts should not only value European Aesthetics but should reflect its own unique mixture of elements. This capacity of absorbing outside influences and at the same time mixing it with its own strong roots giving back to the world something new, is still what for me makes Brazilian Culture and Arts extraordinary. (In fact, I believe the mixture is what makes any culture richer, this is what we are also creating in Australia).
The Centenary of the Modernist Week of São Paulo, has been provoking a huge discussion and opportunity for Brazil to review these ideas and think about its cultural identity again. A lot of criticisms have been made about how relevant and at the vanguard the week truly was in its own time. Although it is great to try to review its history and context, it is clear that it is still very relevant 100 years on, otherwise nobody would be writing about it now.
In my art practice particularly, modernist ideas have been always pivotal as you can see by some of the projects I was already involved with in Switzerland in late 1998 and how these values are still present in my projects in Australia including my concert at the Western Australia Art Gallery in 2013 and my most recent collaborations with the Perth Symphony Oschestra in 2021 and this weekend with the West Coast Philharmonic Orchestra celebrating First Nation and all immigrants contributions to this place we love to call home. Tupi or not Tupi, that is still the question.

Tomorrow Sat 11 Dec it will be our last concert of the year at the Ellington Jazz Club. And what a year! We have literally produced over 20 completely different concerts, to be able to present to you a different theme every month at the Ellington plus countless performances at Cottesloe & Scarborogh Beaches, at the Perth Festival and so many other events, performing for thousands of people during the whole year in just one city due to covid restrictions. The Oceano Yemanja Concert will feature songs about the seven seas of Yemanja, iconic beaches, mythic creatures, lost treasures and magic tales of Neptune, Poseidon, sirens, mermaids, pirates, fish-men, African ships and Atlantis’s mysteries.
Dive into Brazil’s most evocative rhythms – bossa, samba, baiao, afoxe, maracatu, and samba-jazz fusions – featuring fresh arrangement of classics such as “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Beyond the Sea” (“La Mer”) as well as alluring songs by iconic Brazilian artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Djavan, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Alceu Valença, Tim Maia, Maria Gadu, Marina, Lenine, Lulu Santos, Marisa Montes, Ceu, Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo.

Dive into Brazil’s most evocative rhythms – bossa, samba, baiao, afoxe, maracatu, and samba-jazz fusions – featuring fresh arrangement of classics such as “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Beyond the Sea” (“La Mer”) as well as alluring songs by iconic Brazilian artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Djavan, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Alceu Valença, Tim Maia, Maria Gadu, Marina, Lenine, Lulu Santos, Marisa Montes, Ceu, Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo.
The concert will also reference Christiane Anu’s iconic rendition of Warumpi Band’s Australian song “My Island Home” and UK artists who influenced Juliana Areias when she lived in Europe during the 90’s – David Byrne’s record with Caetano Veloso “Dreamworld – Red Hot” (1998) and Smoke City’s record “Underwater Love” (1997) – as well as Madonna’s 1989 hit “Cherish” which includes a line from 1966 “Cherish” by California band “The Association”.

Juliana Areias has performed on major stages internationally including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro. Local performances include concerts at The Perth Festival, and as a soloist with The Perth Symphony Orchestra for the 2021 Western Australian of The Year Awards. Dubbed the “Bossa Nova Baby” by iconic Brazilian journalist Ruy Castro, her original album “Bossa Nova Baby” won “Best Brazilian Album” at the US Focus Brazil Awards in 2019 and spent five weeks in the US Top 100 Jazz Charts 2019/2020. Juliana has also been five times finalist for Western Australian Music Awards.

Perth’s own award-winning Brazilian singer-songwriter, Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, invites you celebrate 2021 Spring on a high note with the exuberant and colourful rhythms of her “Flor de Maracuja” – The Passion Flower Concert.
“Flor de Maracuja” will feature the exotic and irresistible music of Joao Donato, precursor of Bossa Nova and creator of Sambolero (a fusion of Brazilian Samba with Cuban & Mexican Bolero). You will be inspired to sway all the way during this magic night of Brazilian, Latin and Jazz Fusions.
To experience Donato’s music is to drink an elixir of happiness . You will feel enchanted by Donato’s fresh compositions such as his baiao/forro “Flor de Maracuja” (The Passion Fruit Flower), his funky “A Ra” (The Frog) and his iconic bossa “A Paz” (The Peace). “A Paz” was co-composed with Gilberto Gil, and reflects on the human paradox of only being able to truly appreciate beauty and peace after suffering pain, war or challenging times.
Grammy Award winner Joao Donato (86 years old in 2020) has been performing, arranging and composing for the past 70 years. He started his musical career in the 1940s as a teenage accordionist and pianist. He composed “Minha Saudade” with Joao Gilberto and inspired Gilberto to create Bossa Nova. He also composed and recorded iconic contemporary songs with Sergio Mendes, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Marisa Montes, Arnaldo Antunes, Carlinhos Brown, Tito Puentes, Astrud Gilberto, Bebel Gilberto, Gal Costa, Zizi Possi, Joyce, Joao Bosco, Emilio Santiago, Lisa Ono to name just a few. His “Sambolero” album won the Latin Grammy Award for best Latin Jazz Album in 2010 and his “Donato Eletrico” album was nominated for the Latin Grammy Best Instrumental Album of 2016. Rolling Stone magazine named two of his albums as the Best Brazilian album of 2016 and 2017.
