Juliana Areias – SUNSET SONGS AT NORTH COTTESLOE IS BACK

Sunset Songs Returns to North Cottesloe – Free Every Friday this Summer
2 January – 27 March 2026 | 6–8pm | Beside Magic Apple

Award-winning Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, known as The Bossa Nova Baby, is back with her much-loved Sunset Songs at North Cottesloe series. Every Friday evening from 2 January to 27 March 2026, locals and visitors are invited to enjoy free, intimate beachside performances set against Perth’s iconic sunsets.

After a two-summer hiatus, Juliana brings her smooth bossa nova and Brazilian jazz back to her favourite local beach, joined by WAAPA-trained acoustic-guitarists Joshua de Silva and Ridge Moss. A minimalist, family-friendly activity for the whole community, Sunset Songs invites audiences to bring a picnic, unwind and enjoy iconic West Coast sunsets set to gentle Brazilian rhythms.

Perth’s own Girl from Ipanema — or rather, our Girl from Cottesloe — brings her authentic, gentle bossa nova tunes back to the place she calls home. Juliana explains that the community spirit behind the series is what brings her back:“Every time I walk along the beach, someone asks when the Sunset Songs at North Cottesloe series will return. I’ve missed it too. Bossa nova was born at the beach, and the beach was my first stage as a singer in Brazil, and even my surname Areias means beach sands, so returning to sing here is always deeply meaningful to me, it feels like coming full circle. I’m grateful to the Town of Cottesloe and the NCSLSC for supporting the idea again –  it’s truly a gift to share with the community. If I can keep singing close to the sea until I die, I’ll be happy.”

Recently seen at the Perth International Jazz Festival, Juliana has performed internationally at some of the world’s most renowned venues, including the Sydney Opera House, Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Ronnie Scott’s (London), The Green Room (New York), and Rio’s legendary Beco das Garrafas, where bossa nova was born.

Juliana’s love of music and performance stretches back to her teenage years in Brazil, when she was personally introduced to the founders of bossa nova by legendary Brazilian journalist and historian Ruy Castro, who gave her the nickname The Bossa Nova Baby. That early connection inspired her to pursue a professional career in music – one that has taken her across Europe, the USA, Japan, Singapore, Latin America, New Zealand and Australia.

Her acclaimed album Bossa Nova Baby won Best Brazilian Album at the US Focus Brazil Awards and reached the US Top 100 Jazz Charts. She is a five-time Western Australian Music Awards nominee, with ABC Radio National describing her as “the changing face of Australian music”, and The Australian praising her for “excelling in elegance.”

The Sunset Songs performances are entirely self-funded, with Juliana welcoming donations and sponsorship to help sustain the project. The series is designed to be inclusive and engaging: audiences are free to dance, walk along the sand, enjoy a meal or picnic, or simply stop for a moment and soak in the music.

Critics internationally have celebrated Juliana’s artistry:

  • “Rhythmically perfect and passionate vocal delivery… She excels in elegance.”The Australian
  • “A wonderful Brazilian-Australian bossa nova baby with contemporary bossa nova songs.”Key and Chords, Belgium
  • “It’s bossa that plays soccer with jazz — and scores.”O GLOBO, Brazil
  • “Mixing styles and cultures is reflected in her life and music.”Daily Record, USA

This summer, West Australians are invited to experience the magic of Sunset Songs at North Cottesloe — an enchanting mix of music, community and the golden beauty of Perth sunsets, created by a local artist for her home and the people who love it.

Brasilia Justice Statue smiles again

The Justice Statue in front of Brazil’s Supreme Court (Supremo Tribunal Federal) – 📸: Pedro França/Agência Senado / Artist: Alfredo Ceschiatti / Architect: Oscar Niemeyer

“Brasilia sky, architect’s lines, I like it/her so much in this way”. (Djavan/Caetano Veloso)

“Her” today is the Justice symbolised not only by the statue but by the Brazilian Supreme Court’s minister Carmen Lucia who’s female vote defined the condemnation of ex president Bolsonaro and his criminal allies who tried to do a coup d’état in Brazil, not respecting the results of last election. It was 4 x 1 votes for condemnation: Carmen along with Alexandre de Moraes, Flavio Dino and Cristiano Zanin votes in favour of the condemnation. Only Luiz Fux against it.

Finally!!! 🥂🍾 👏👏
Long live to Minister Carmen Lucia with her lucidity, Lux, while Luiz tried to -“F”ux the trial.

Still, once again, showing that democracy is built through dialogue, which allows for disagreements.

Fux’s authoritarian attitude, saying I’m the only one speaking and no one can contribute, clearly shows the kind of person him and Bolsonaro are – for whom only their own “freedom” and “truth” matter. His stance of absorbing the mandate and condemning his aides is also quite revealing, especially his decision regarding Mauro Cid, a vengeful and punitive attitude for having spoken out, collaborating with the justice system by making a plea bargain, to lessen his own sentence. The lordly mentality, with contempt for servants seen as disposable and despicable when they are no longer useful to the lord, is also emblematic of Fux’s vote—just like Bolsonaro’s conduct throughout his public life.

A democracy that does allow for a plurality of thought, a true trial where Fux also fulfilled his part, representing precisely the approximately 20% of the Brazilian population that insists on defending Bolsonaro fanatically and blindly, at any cost.

Mourning a loss is permitted. Planning a coup is not. Justice has been served! And the majority of Brazil celebrates and gives thanks! 👏👏🥂🍾

The Brazil represented by Carmen Lucia. This is the Brazil that I love and that I feel connected to.

Thank you. 💞 (IN PORTUGUSE below)

IN PORTUGUSE – 🇧🇷

“Céu de Brasília traço do arquiteto gosto tanto dela assim.” (Djavan / Caetano Veloso).

Lamentar perda eh permitdo. Planejar golpe de estado não eh. Justiça foi feita! E a maioria do Brasil comemora e agradece! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🥂🍾

O Brasil representado por Carmen Lucia. Esse eh o Brasil que eu amo e me sinto conectada.

Obrigada. 💞

Happy Bossa Nova Day – Tom Jobim & Leny Andrade birthday tribute

HAPPY BOSSA NOVA DAY! The day on which Antônio Carlos Jobim & Leny Andrade were born, both pivotal artists in the creation and development of Bossa Nova and Samba Jazz. No wonder they are my favourite composer and singer respectively.

Leny used to call me her “little friend photographer”… At the same time, my dear friend Ruy Castro gave me the nickname “Bossa Nova Baby”,  and gave me access to many rehearsals and concerts of the Chega de Saudade Concert Series featuring all my Bossa Nova idols…  This luck of meeting them all personally and taking all opportunities to watch them live, be with them during the rehearsals and after the concerts, having dinner all together, during my teenage years, inspired me to become a singer.

Here is our tribute to both of them, Leny Andrade and Tom Jobim, featuring 3 of their original arrangements and 1 surprise arrangement.

Waters of March – composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim

Wave – composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim, arranged by Leny Andrade’s band.

Dindi – composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Aloysio de Oliveira featuring Loro Bardot with Juliana Areias.

Eu quero ver – composed by Carlinhos Vergueiro / J. Petrolino / Landinho , arranged by Leny Andrade’s band.

🎥 Videos recorded at the Ellington Jazz Club, Perth, Australia, featuring: Juliana Areias (voice), Paul Millard (sax/flute), Moha Michel (piano), Joshua de Silva (guitar), Tommi Flamenco (bass), Rafael Medeiros de Souza (percussion), Francisco Munhoz (drums), Bronton Ainsworth (drums) and very special guest Loro Bardot.

Beautiful day to became Australian – thanks to Bossa Nova

What a beautiful day to become Australian! So much to say… I feel only gratitude. This citizenship comes after living in Perth for 16 years and after receiving the rare Global Distinguished Talent Visa about 2 years ago thanks to a life long dedication to Bossa Nova worldwide.

Thank you Meu Amor Geoffrey, for all your love, encouragement and support at every step… For helping me and understanding how important it was to be granted Australian citizenship for me and for my beloved kids Jobim and Lilas, not by the easiest way… but because I am an artist.

Why we do what we do, is important. It matters that we persist in what we believe is the best contribution we can give to the world.

To be an artist means to deal with continuous uncertainty, frequent rejection and lack of understanding almost everyday. Yet, on a day like today, the value of culture and the arts is reaffirmed.

Thank you Australia.

Thank you Bossa Nova.

Thank you Ruy Castro. Thank you Menescal.

Thank you meus amores Geoffrey, Jobim, Lilas and Lua.

Thank you to my family and friends here and around the world. Thank you to every person I have ever met and every life event which has brought me to here and now.

This Friday 20 September, I get to do what I love doing and I hope I can have the honour of celebrating with you at our Juliana Areias – Jobim Forever Concert at the Ellington Jazz Club. http://www.julianaareias.com (link in bio).

Juliana Areias – Jobim Forever

Thank you Antônio Carlos Jobim, Leny Andrade, Joao Gilberto, Vinícius de Moraes and all bossa nova masters.

Thank you Perth.

Thank you the Ellington Jazz Club

Thank you all for supporting live music in this extraordinary city we all love to call home. Our Island Home – Australia.

  • PERTH Sat 16 Dec 2023 – Juliana Areias – Samba Jazz – Leny Andrade  @ The Ellington Jazz Club 7pm – BOOK NOW

Award winning Brazilian singer-songwriter – Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, invites you to finish the year in the grooviest mode, celebrating the music and life of the greatest lady of Brazilian Samba-Jazz: Leny Andrade.

Described by Tony Bennett as the “Ella Fitzgerald  of Brazil”, Leny spent her career touring the world and living between her home town of Rio de Janeiro, New York and Mexico. Tony used to often come to watch Leny’s concerts and he loved to make live drawings of her while she was performing. Tony Bennet and Leny Andrade were together in music, friendship and life, to the point of leaving us only a few days apart, on the 21st and 24th of July 2023 respectively.

For the The New York Times Andrade was both the Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald of bossa nova …”her voice seems to contain the body and soul of Brazil.”

Leny Andrade’s impeccable sense of rhythm, signature scats, rich low vocals, and majestic presence has gained the respect and admiration of generations. Indeed, Leny is the singer who Juliana Areias most saw live since her teenage years, and is Areias’s greatest inspiration to become a singer herself.

The concert will feature some of the most iconic songs and arrangements from Leny’s repertoire, featuring composers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ivan Lins, Djavan, Chico Buarque, Gonzaquinha, Moacyr Luz, Aldir Blanc, Dolores Duran, Carlos Lyra, Durval Ferreira, Mauricio Einhorn… as well as the very first bolero Leny learned in Spanish “Si me enamoro” by Sergio Mianovich, and some of the delicious stories she used to tell on stage which Juliana Areias still remembers by heart.

Juliana Areias is honoured to share the stage once more with the amazing musicians of her Bossa Nova Baby band: Joshua de Silva (seven string guitar), Paul Millard (sax/flute), Tommi Flamenco (bass), Bronton Ainsworth (drums), Rafael Medeiros de Souza (percussion); and special guest singer-songwriter Loro Bardot. This will be the last opportunity to enjoy Juliana Areias and Joshua de Silva performing together and a celebration of all the beautiful musicianship they have created during six years of collaboration.

Juliana Areias has performed on major stages internationally including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro.
