Antônio Cícero just left – “A Francesa” – in French style, without notice, but with a note, dignity and giving us his brilliant mind, art, words, songs… If I could send him a reply I would use these words, his own words. Here is a collection of iPhone footage from our concert “Colourful Magic” in February 2024 celebrating the music 🎵 of his sister Marina Lima @marinalimax1 and his unforgettable lyrics … Thank you Antônio Cicero @antoniocicerocorreialima
“My love has left me , taking away my identity. I no longer know where I am, nor where is reality… If you left in French Style – without goodbyes – I would keep wondering forever… If I ask you to stay, oh please, my love, I swear to that I don’t want to let you down, nor leave you alone in the dark. But the happy moments are not hidden neither in the past nor in the future… You open your arms to me, and we make a full country. Therefore wherever you go, it is there that I will be… because I am pregnant, expecting an airplane ✈️, every time more pregnant, I am pregnant of ground. And I will get in labour over the city, when the night contracts, and when the sun dilates, I will give birth… What a such crazy world, what a overly crazy world, even crazier than myself. It is fever, it is love, and I want more. All I wish, seriously, it is all this mystery… A king (a being) like that, who cultivates solitude, a dark flower in his heart… searching for a way to find comfort, but not just for others…Men can do very little. Time always knows best how to act. The wait sometimes lasts a while: a day, a month, an existence.”
Band : Juliana Areias – vocals & Loro Bardot – piano/back vocal, Paul Millard – sax/flute, Tommi Flamenco – bass, Francisco Munoz – drums and Rafael Medeiros de Souza – percussion
Song order: Maresia, A Francesa, Fullgas, Grávida, Charme do Mundo, Eu Vi o Rei Chegar, Meus Irmãos. (All composed by Marina Lima & Antônio Cicero)

What a beautiful day to become Australian! So much to say… I feel only gratitude. This citizenship comes after living in Perth for 16 years and after receiving the rare Global Distinguished Talent Visa about 2 years ago thanks to a life long dedication to Bossa Nova worldwide.
Thank you Meu Amor Geoffrey, for all your love, encouragement and support at every step… For helping me and understanding how important it was to be granted Australian citizenship for me and for my beloved kids Jobim and Lilas, not by the easiest way… but because I am an artist.
Why we do what we do, is important. It matters that we persist in what we believe is the best contribution we can give to the world.
To be an artist means to deal with continuous uncertainty, frequent rejection and lack of understanding almost everyday. Yet, on a day like today, the value of culture and the arts is reaffirmed.
Thank you Australia.
Thank you Bossa Nova.
Thank you Ruy Castro. Thank you Menescal.
Thank you meus amores Geoffrey, Jobim, Lilas and Lua.
Thank you to my family and friends here and around the world. Thank you to every person I have ever met and every life event which has brought me to here and now.
This Friday 20 September, I get to do what I love doing and I hope I can have the honour of celebrating with you at our Juliana Areias – Jobim Forever Concert at the Ellington Jazz Club. http://www.julianaareias.com (link in bio).
Juliana Areias – Jobim Forever
Thank you Antônio Carlos Jobim, Leny Andrade, Joao Gilberto, Vinícius de Moraes and all bossa nova masters.
Thank you Perth.
Thank you the Ellington Jazz Club
Thank you all for supporting live music in this extraordinary city we all love to call home. Our Island Home – Australia.
Sergio Mendes and Antonio Carlos Jobim strolling the streets on Manhattan in 1962.
“1962, my first time walking the streets of New York City with my dear friend and mentor maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim. Completely surreal… for a young kid from Niteroi to get this opportunity… This was the moment when the Bossa Nova craze began in America.” ~ Sergio Mendes.
I call it, the “Mas que nada” effect. says, @julianaareiasbossanovababy. Any Brazilian musician living in an English speaking country, will recognise it. It happens every time this song by @jorgebenjoroficial is performed. Who made it famous was another musician, “my cousin”, this guy who plays at the end of the video with his band “Brazil 66”. Almost every family here in Australia has his album at home. Once I heard him claiming that this was the first time a song sung only in Portuguese became a global hit. Is he correct ? Correct or wrong thank you @sergiomendesmusic for your musical contribution over decades which goes far beyond this iconic recording. Like Carmen Miranda, Astrud Gilberto, Tom Jobim, João Gilberto and many more before and after you, thank you for your musical contribution, and for helping to pave the way for so many more Brazilian international artists like me. Thank you. Obrigada. Rest in music, aquarian visionary artist. Sergio Mendes – 11/2/1941 – 6/9/2024.

Spring brings award-winning Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, the Bossa Nova Baby, with her new band to present a magical tribute to her favourite composer and bossa nova master; Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the iconic album Getz/Gilberto, the 50th anniversary of Elis & Tom album, and remembering the 30th anniversary of Jobim’s death, the Jobim Forever concert will embrace timeless Jobim bossa classics – such as; The Girl from Ipanema, One Note Samba, Waters of March – which were introduced to the English-speaking world by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao & Astrud Gilberto, Stan Getz, Sergio Mendes, Charlie Byrd, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau and Esperanza Spalding; – as well as other breathtaking Jobim compositions that may sound new for the audience.
Juliana was personally introduced to the Bossa Nova founders when she was a teenager by the legendary Brazilian music historian and journalist Ruy Castro who also dubbed her “The Bossa Nova Baby”. This direct contact with the bossa masters inspired her to become a professional singer and songwriter. Juliana still vividly remembers the last time she saw Jobim’s live open air concert at Ibirapuera Park in Sao Paulo City, one year before his passing in 1994 and how his music has been influencing her and future generations globally ever since.
For this exceptionally special concert, Juliana Areias’s Bossa Nova Baby band will feature for the first time Cuban pianist Mohamed Michel and bassist Danny Moss Jr, as well as her long time music partners Paul Millard (sax-flute), Francisco Muñoz (drums) and Rafael Mendeiros de Souza (percussion). – showcasing the amazing talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth.
Juliana Areias has performed on major stages around the world including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro. Her original album “Bossa Nova Baby” won “Best Brazilian Album” at the US Focus Brazil Awards in 2019 and spent five weeks in the US Top 100 Jazz Charts. Juliana has also been nominated five times for Western Australian Music Awards including Best World Music Act and Best Song.

SUPPORTING PERTH’S NEW GENERATION TALENT AND CELEBRATING 15th YEARS OF THE ELLINGTON JAZZ CLUB – ELLINGTON 15 PHOTO EXHIBITION LAUNCH – 7 June 2024
This week, feeling a new wave of energy, after taking a pivotal decision and also after going out to appreciate the UNDENIABLE artistic talent of some incredible women I truly admire and their tremendous contribution to Perth’s superb arts scene.
Since Thursday discovering the original instrumental songs of CARLTON/FORSTER/PASS/VALENTI Quartet – via their beautiful live concert and album “UNDENIABLE”. Thank you Talya for this precious gift.
Yesterday at the opening of “Ellington 15 Exhibition: Fifteen Years of Jazz Photography” – Upstairs at The Ellington – curated by ANGELYNE WOLFE featuring the beautiful photographies of ANGELYNE Wolfe, Nathan Bullivant, Steven Emmerson, Ewa Ginal-Cumblidge, and Corey James. The free exhibition stays open until this Sunday night . You should come and see it.
Without Angelyne, the Ellington Jazz Club as we know it, would not have been created and succeed. Not only because thanks to her Graham Wood and Bernard Kong have met but also because her mark is in its every conceptual detail including its logo, its original website, posters and flyers and all her “behind the camera” work, literally helping to run the show.
Angelyne was also the photographer and graphic designer who did my album “Bossa Nova Baby” and who photographed its launch. It was extremely emotional to me to see that special night also represented in the exhibition as well as all the amazing moments captured of all my muso colleagues over these 15 years .
Thank you Angelyne for creating this exhibition and the Ellington itself and all your tremendous work for its success and its fine reputation. Thank you for celebrating and documenting The Ellington’s history and evolution – this place which is like home for all of us. Thank you.
Thank you as well for being there with me and for capturing these moments dear friend photographer Laura Casotti and Meu Amor Geoffrey Drake- Brockman.
Few moments of a very emotional Memorial for our beloved Lois Olney, which happended on 31/5 at the Kidogo House – beautifully organised by Lois’s closest friends Moira Finucane, Mama Alto and Dave Johnson featuring them along so many artists and friends who love Lois and could be there, including Diane Niyati, Dellla Rae Morrison, Maatakitj, Arunachala, Kate Pass, Talya Valenti, Lucky Oceans, Tenille Elkins, Ross McCallum, Horatio T Birdbath, Kylie Bracknel, Dan Howls, Ken Kelso, Reuben Kooperman, Ben Powers, Donna Simpson, Starlight Hotel Choir, Justin Olney, Kenton Pell, Kath Ryan, James Kerr and us: Meu Amor Geoffrey Drake-Brockman, myself and special friends who came to share the stage and this moment as well Shon Boublil and Loro Bardot. Last Saturday 4 May 2024 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1.6 million people came to Copacabana Beach to watch the last performance of Madonna’s Celebration Tour, marking 40 years of her artistic Pop Star journey.
It is not surprising that Madonna’s show in Copacabana broke the record for the most attended stand-alone concert for any artist performing for free, and was the all-time highest attended concert by a female artist.
Perhaps it is also not surprising that 4 decades after recording her second album “Like a Virgin”, there are still so many people bothered by our Pop Queen’s deliberate sexual references, playbacks and dance sequences on stage – as if these elements were not “expected” in the Pop scene. If Madonna’s trademark has always been to be controversial, we can quote her, now 65 years old, saying: “The most controversial thing I’ve ever done, it is to stick around”. *
What Madonna has delivered in this audacious and generous over-2-hours-long free open air live-streamed pop spectacle, only Madonna could produce. It was visually magnificent with beautiful contemporary dance choreographies, artistically sublime in terms of its symbolic meaning, and unapologetically authentic pop music. Watching the concert felt like participating in a live version of her iconic video clips and at the same time having a magical portal connecting New York and Rio’s Carnival.
The spectacle was also a declaration of love to cultural and gender diversity. It paid tribute to people who died from AIDS over decades including Freddie Mercury and Brazilian pop singers Renato Russo and Cazuza. It also paid its respects to many Brazilian iconic artists and personalities including composers Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, minister of Environment and Climate Change Marina Silva and assassinated queer politician and human rights activist Marielle Franco. Madonna has also invited two controversial young Brazilian pop artists to share her stage: female singer Anitta and trans singer Pablo Vittar accompanied by Brazilian samba school drumming musicians.
Before Madonna, for me there was already the “Brazilian Queen of Rock”; Rita Lee and the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo – both extraordinary rebellious artists never afraid of declaring their own desires and living the life of their own choice. In this context, to love Madonna and her work has been always natural for me.
Thank you Madonna for appreciating Brazil and for your understanding of Brazilian Culture and arts. Thank you for being the true artist that you are – inspiring, questioning and transforming our contemporary society for 4 decades and for reminding Brazil, Rio and Copacabana of its bright, colourful, pluralistic, richly multicultural-nature which was so misrepresented during Bolsonaro’s latest event in Copacabana just few weeks ago. Sadly on that day, about 35,000 people came to Copacabana to support Bolsonaro’s impunity, denial of responsibility and theocratic state agendas. I am so glad to see that so many more people were in Copacabana to watch Madonna last Saturday: 1.6 million people – who clearly are much more progressive than Bolsonaro’s fanatic crowd.
“Music makes the people come together. Yeah! Music mix the bourgeoisie and the rebel. “
With Madonna, “Rio remains beautiful.” (O Rio de Janeiro continua lindo).
Artistic mission well accomplished! Viva Madonna! Viva the arts! Viva Brazilian Cultural Diversity!
* Billboard 2016 – Madonna’s Women of the Year – acceptance award quote:
“People say that I’m so controversial but I think the most controversial thing I’ve ever done is to stick around. What I would like to say to all the women here today is this. Women have been so oppressed for so long that they believe what men say about them. And they believe they have to back a man to get the job done. And there are some very good men that worth of backing, but not because they’re men but because they’re worthy. As women we have to start appreciating our own worth and each other worth. Seek out strong women to be friend, to align yourself with, to learn from, to be inspired by, to collaborate with, to support, to be enlightened by.”
“Your action is worthy, my dear indigenous…Despite of my clothes I am also indigenous.” Song: “Cara de Indio” (Indigenous Face) by Djavan.
On 19 April in Brazil, it’s the Indigenous Nations Day. I particularly remember this celebration during my pre-primary school time, where we used to make clay pots, paint our faces and make caxixi “maraca” shakers.
“Curumim” is the word for child in “Tupi-Guarani”, the largest Indigenous language of Brazil. Growing up, I had no idea that I was also an indigenous “curumim”. I discovered it after making my first DNA test some years ago, which revealed that I had about 2% of Indigenous DNA. (As well as, unsurprisingly 6% African and 92% European).
Thanks to the wonderful research of my dear cousin Vania Mendes Ramos da Silva, last year we got to learn that we are descendants from 2 emblematic “Tupiniquim” brothers and chiefs , Cacique Tibiriçá and Cacique Piquerobi, both born around 1480 in Brazil, “curumins” of chief Cacique Amyipaguana and Arumã Guayaná Tibiriça.
Although both brothers married their daughters to some of the first Portuguese settlers, they had opposite atitude toward colonisation. Tibiriçá welcome and collaborated with the Portuguese conquerors and converted to Christianity helping the Jesuits to found São Paulo city (where I was born) by fighting and killing his own brother Piquerobi and nephew Jaguaranho who resisted colanisation and refused to abandon their own culture and believes. Tibiriçá was baptised with an European name Martim Afonso and got a crypt monument made for him inside Sao Paulo’s Cathedral (Catedral da Sé). Piquerobi just recently, got a painting called “A face to Piquerobi” in 2020.
And here we are, telling their stories almost 500 years later. Their stories which are our stories.
This amalgam of people cohabits in me: natives and invaders, collaborators and resistants, enslaved and colonisers, siblings and enemies, priests and young maiden.
Knowledge gives opportunity to reflection.
Reflection is pivotal to make sense of who we are, our past, present and future.

PERTH – Sat 24 Feb 2024 – Juliana Areias – COLOURFUL MAGIC – between Marina Lima & Loro bardot @ The Ellington Jazz Club 7pm – BOOK NOW
“Summer is on, a warmth in the heart, this colourful magic, is part of life”.
Award-winning Brazilian singer/songwriter – Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, invites you to celebrate a rainbow of rhythms featuring the hits of Brazilian 80-90’s pop star Marina Lima, as well as the alluring voice and compositions of Loro Bardot, Brazilian movie-star and singer/songwriter who is currently in Perth.
Part of Marina Lima’s lasting impact on the Brazilian Music scene was to be one of the first pop artists to declare and sing about being non-heterosexual, paving the way for contemporary artists like Loro Bardot. Both of them had their voices showcased as opening themes of major television shows in Brazil and are prominent artists of their generations, with their songs well-loved both inside and outside the LGBTQ+ community.
The Colourful Magic concert will present some of the most iconic songs from Marina Lima’s brilliant repertoire, including “Fullgas”, “Uma noite e meia”, “A Francesa”; as well as an exclusive selection of songs by Loro Bardot. Stand by also to learn a little of the history and interesting stories behind these songs.
For this exceptional concert, Juliana Areias is thrilled to share the stage with the amazing musicians of her Bossa Nova Baby band: Paul Millard (sax/flute), Tommi Flamenco (bass), Francisco Munõz (drums), Rafael Medeiros de Souza (percussion); this time, also featuring Loro Bardot playing piano for the entire night.
Come and discover or rediscover these irresistible tunes and experience Juliana’s “pop” side as she connects with these legendary artists.
Loro Bardot began their musical career at the age of 18 with the release of his first EP “Café dos Pássaros” (Bird Cafe). Despite having started out in music, they hold a bachelor’s degree in Performing Arts from ESCH, and their intelligence is focused on physical theater and soundtrack production. In 2015, Loro acted in “Ramp”, an English play directed by Scottish director Shona Cowie about the occupation of public schools in São Paulo. Loro is best known for singing the opening song for the TV series “Assédio” (Globo, 2019) and being featured in GQ magazine as one of the rising voices of 2019, alongside other artists such as Duda Beat, Jaloo, and MC Tha. In May 2021, they released the EP “Sessões de Quarentena” (Quarantine Sessions), which addressed themes such as desire, death, and the passage of time. In 2023, Bardot made their debut in the film industry in the movie LEVANTE (Power Alley), in which they starred alongside actress Ayomi Domenica. This multi-award winning film was nominated for best movie at Cannes Film Festival Critics Week, and also won the Fipresci prize at Cannes.
Juliana Areias has performed on major stages internationally including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro.
