Rest in music – Sergio Mendes – Brazil 66 Tribute

Sergio Mendes and Antonio Carlos Jobim strolling the streets on Manhattan in 1962.

“1962, my first time walking the streets of New York City with my dear friend and mentor maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim. Completely surreal… for a young kid from Niteroi to get this opportunity… This was the moment when the Bossa Nova craze began in America.”
~ Sergio Mendes.

I call it, the “Mas que nada” effect. says, @julianaareiasbossanovababy. Any Brazilian musician living in an English speaking country, will recognise it. It happens every time this song by @jorgebenjoroficial is performed. Who made it famous was another musician, “my cousin”, this guy who plays at the end of the video with his band “Brazil 66”. Almost every family here in Australia has his album at home. Once I heard him claiming that this was the first time a song sung only in Portuguese became a global hit. Is he correct ? Correct or wrong thank you @sergiomendesmusic for your musical contribution over decades which goes far beyond this iconic recording. Like Carmen Miranda, Astrud Gilberto, Tom Jobim, João Gilberto and many more before and after you, thank you for your musical contribution, and for helping to pave the way for so many more Brazilian international artists like me. Thank you. Obrigada. Rest in music, aquarian visionary artist. Sergio Mendes – 11/2/1941 – 6/9/2024.
