PERTH INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL AT THE ELLINGTON JAZZ CLUB
25TH OCTOBER – 2ND NOVEMBER

“The toast of the Perth Jazz Scene. The release of Bossa Nova Baby has elevated her above a mere covers singer or bossa specialist. Rhythmically perfect and vocally passionate” The Australian

Award-winning singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, The Bossa Nova Baby, brings her authentic Brazilian style to this colourful concert blending iconic MPB songs & timeless bossa nova classics with an exquisite selection of originals.

Juliana Areias has performed on major stages around the world, including the Sydney Opera House, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, and Rio’s legendary Beco das Garrafas – where bossa nova was born.

Her acclaimed original album Bossa Nova Baby won Best Brazilian Album at the US Focus Brazil Awards and reached the US Top 100 Jazz Charts. A five-time Western Australian Music Awards nominee, her music was considered “the changing face of Australian music” by ABC Radio National and praised as “excelling in elegance” by The Australian in its four-star review.

Expect favourites by masters such as Jobim, Djavan, Joao Donato, Rita Lee, Gal Costa, Elis Regina, Leny Andrade, Rosa Passos and many more. For this exclusive concert, Areias is honoured to share the stage with the beating heart of her dream band – Joshua de Silva (seven-string guitars), Bronton Ainsworth (drums), Rafael Medeiros de Souza (percussion) and a new generation of exceptionally talented Brazilian musicians and singers: Arthur Freitas (voice/guitar) and Loro Bardot (voice/piano/guitar). Let’s sway and be spellbound by Juliana Areias and her Bossa Nova Baby Band!

A show tribute to Graham Wood

A red rose on the piano. A special night at the Ellington Jazz Club. Bossa Nova Baby Show Tribute to Graham Wood’s life, talent and legacy. Thank you everyone for being part of it last night. With love from all of us.

This week on Wednesday 19th July,  Perth lost Graham Wood, great pianist, academic, co-owner of The Ellington Jazz Club and founder of The Perth International jazz Festival. My condolences to the family, Alex, the kids… May Graham be with his beautiful mother Stella and his father… May Graham always be with us through his music and all that he has created to make a difference.

Of course the show Juliana Areias – Bossa Nova Baby at the Ellington this Friday 21st, could not be a regular one, but also a tribute to Graham’s amazing legacy…

Without Graham, the Bossa Nova Baby album would not sound the same. Without Graham, there would be no Ellington Jazz Club, no Perth International Jazz Festival… It was even Graham who introduced me and recommended the talented young pianist Shai Martin who  performed and shared the Ellington stage with us this Friday… Without Graham all the pianists and jazz students from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) would not be the same… Jazz would not be the same, Perth and Australia would not be the same…

You never know how you feel about death until it strikes…

RIP, Graham… Eternal life to your music, creations and legacy… With love from all of us…
