BIOGRAPHY

Bossa Nova Baby is her nick name. And now also the title of her first original album

When she was a teenager, she was introduced personally to the Bossa Nova movement’s founders by Brazilian Music biographer Ruy Castro – who also named her “The Bossa Nova Baby”. This direct exposure to the Bossa Nova masters inspired her to become a professional singer and song-writer.

Juliana Areias lived for many years in Switzerland and New Zealand prior to moving to Australia. Her career includes performances at major international festivals such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, Auckland Festival, and America’s Cup (NZ). Recent performances include, The Perth International Jazz Festival, The Kings Park Festival, New York’s exhibition “Van Gogh, Dali and Beyond” at The Art Gallery of Western Australia, and Ritmo Festival at The Darling Harbour, where she sang for a crowd of over 30.000 people.

After the great launch concert for her first original album “Bossa Nova Baby”, Juliana Areias, the Bossa Nova Baby herself – is back at the Ellington to present a one-night only show; “From Sugarloaf to Absinthe” – a blend of classic and exotic tunes from the tropical plantations of sugarcane, cocoa and coffee – blended with the bohemian spirit of “La Belle Époque”.

The concert will embrace timeless classics such as “The Girl from Ipanema”, “Quizas” (“Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps”) and “La Vie en Rose” and feature a stellar line-up of musicians, including Mark Shanahan – nylon string guitar, Marcio Mendes – percussion, Paul Millard – flute/sax, special guests and more surprises.

An exuberant night of sensuous bossas and sambas from Rio’s Sugarloaf, joyful rumbas and boleros inspired by the Caribbean Islands and the Aztec lands of Mexico along with some inebriating fine drops of French swing.

Brazilian singer Juliana Areias celebrates release of her first original album.

Bossa Nova Baby is her nickname. And now also the title of her first original album. With over a year of sold out concerts around Australia, Brazilian Singer Juliana Areias will be launching “Bossa Nova baby” at the Ellington Jazz Club on Saturday, 7th February, when she also celebrates her 40th birthday.

Sponsored by The Department of Culture and the Arts of the Government of Western Australia, the CD is a selection of 12 original songs composed by Juliana Areias all around the globe and recorded in Perth with some of the most highly regarded jazz musicians in Australia.

Most of then will be sharing the stage with her at The Ellington – Pete Jeavons ( bass, double bass, arranger and producer), Graham Wood (piano), Ray Walker (drums), Paul Millard (sax, flute) plus special guests. On stage, they will create a contemporary dialogue between bossa, samba jazz, tango, choro, pop and funk through songs like “Mare Cheia”, :Belas Artes”, “Meu Lugar” and “Night in Takapuna”.

“6 Continentes” Festival and Summer Nights show

While finishing the production of the Bossa Nova Baby Album, Juliana Areias prepares her last concerts of the year – as part of the “6 Continentes Festival“, on Saturday 6 December, and Summer Nights Show at the Ellington Jazz Club, on Friday 12 December. (Book now).

Juliana Areias will represent Brazil and Australia at “6 Continentes Festival” ( Festival 6 Continentes – O Festival – Internacional da musica lusofona) – A worldwide festival celebrating Portuguese Language Music simultaneously around the globe. In Perth, on Saturday 6/12 – 4 – 7pm at MosArts – Mosman Park Performing Centre – Camelot (12-16 Lockee St Mosman Park). Also featuring Mike Burns and Fado Bica (Portugal), Brenda Lee (Malacca), Mahmoud Selimane (Mozambique). Event supported in Brazil by Paula Morelenbaum and Danilo Caymmi.

Juliana Areias’ “Summer Nights” show at the Ellington on Friday 12/12 presents summer songs composed by some of the greatest Brazilian composers including Antonio Carlos Jobim, Djavan, and Chico Buarque – Brazil’s most acclaimed lyricist who is celebrating his 70th anniversary in 2014. In this show, Juliana presents the Brazilian guitar player Eduardo Ruaro, who will be performing for the first time at the Ellington. The show also features Brazilian percussionist Sergio Maia and multi-instrumentalist Steve Searle on flute, sax, clarinet and trompete.

Juliana Areias is thrilled to announce that she will be sharing the stage and supporting her superb friends and performers from Melbourne for one night only magic presentation.

“While producing my own original album “Bossa Nova Baby” it is a honor to support another great original work, showcasing in Perth one of the best acts from Melbourne.”

Melbourne singer-songwriter and Brazilian song interpreter Diana May Clark launches her debut original album ‘The Other Side of the Girl’ at this special Ellington Launch event, with the support of Perth based Brazilian Singer Juliana Areias and the virtuoso Doug de Vries Trio.

Diana May Clark established her interpretive credentials by way of 2 award-winning recordings with Guitarist (collaborator and husband) Doug de Vries. Their take on the Brazilian Songbook is superb.

This project of ‘sunny grown up pop’ was in response to Clark taking to the piano after losing her voice for a winter. It combines the pop/rock/jazz influences she grew up with and the font of ‘musica brasileira’ that she still loves. Produced by Greg Arnold (Things of Stone and Wood) through a 60s Pure Pop filter, this is an album of summer anthems.

Playing Perth in acoustic mode, Diana’s songs speak of unity, the wheel of life, travel, family and having an escape plan. Her ‘film-noir’ ripe vocals the heart wrapped in collaborator/husband Doug de Vries’ cool guitar riffs and the good groove of Alastair Kerr’s drum kit and superb Pete Jeavons’ bass.

Patrons can expect psychedelic melodies peppered with occasional Portuguese lyrics, – don’t be afraid to dress with a 60s twist and be ready to fall in love with Diana’s sound!

Sydney Tour 2014 – Abuka and Juliana Areias Concert at 505

After the great concert at the Kings Park Festival and the 2 first weeks of the recording and production of the Bossa Nova Baby Album, Juliana Areias heads to Sydney for one night only concert with ABUKA at the 505 on the October 16th. Together they will showcase original songs as well as their influences in the vast Brazilian and world music scene. Book now. (505: 280 Cleveland St Surry Hills – Corner of Cleveland and Perry St)

The concert, named Pipoca Moderna refers to “Tropicalismo”, a movement, whose diverse influence and anthropophagic behaviour, changed Brazilian music history in the 60s.

Tropicalismo portrayed a critical and complex picture of the country combining the archaic Brazil of tradition and the modern Brazil of mass culture through music, cinema and visual arts.

The repertoire of Brazilian popular music became more sophisticated and innovative yet open and all-inclusive. Tropicalismo mixed rock and bossa nova, samba, rumba, bolero, baião and beyond.

Sandro Bueno Abuka 505 Juliana Areias Both Juliana Areias and Abuka are undoubtedly shaped by the Tropicalia concept, therefore their music are a wonderful melting pot of rhythms blending Brazilian and world sounds.

Singer/songwriter Tiago De Lucca and multi-percussionist Sandro Bueno, based in Sydney, are the minds behind Abuka. Playing together for the past 5 years they have exchanged music ideas and shared stages with an array of outstanding Australian and international musicians.

On the double-bass, one of the major players on the Australian Jazz landscape, winner of the Australian Independent Record Industry (AIR) in 2013, best selling jazz artist album for Birdland record for two years (2013/14) consecutively, the APRA Ambassador Jonathan Zwartz.

On drums recently arrived from Brazil, Bruno Silveira is a fresh muso in Sydney bringing his spectacular curriculum and groove knowledge to our shores. Bruno recorded with some of the biggest names in Brazilian music, such as Caetano Veloso, Elza Soares, Black Rio and list goes on.

On piano/keyboards the master Daniel Pliner, whose talent is justified as one of the most sought after musicians in town. He shares his talent with various bands and music projects. Barefoot Divas, The Strides and Watussi are a few of the hot Australian bands where Pliner add his flawless style.

At the same very night, Vibez Brazil will put on a selection of rare, classics and contemporary Brazilian grooves, a 100% on VINYL. Vibez Brazil will guide you thru different periods of Brazilian music and a beautiful insight of Tropicalia sounds.

Spring news: Sunset songs , Perth & Sydney Concerts

This spring brings exciting news and concerts!

The production of the “Bossa Nova Baby Album” is progressing in full swing – or , shall we say “in full bossa” – thanks to the amazing talent and passion of all the musicians and professionals involved in the project and with the support of the Department of Culture and the Arts and fans around the world. You can pre-order your copy of the album now.

Following a month of shows at the Crown Casino and a special invitation to perform at the Cine Vivo – 10th Latin American Film Festival (20/9), Juliana Areias is confirmed to perform on the closing day of the Kings Park Festival , on 28/9 – 12.30pm- 2pm at the main stage, located in the WA Botanic Garden, near the corner of Lovekin and Forrest Drives. The Belleville Gypsy Quartet and Libby Hammer Big Band are also part of the program.

The new season of SUNSET SONGS begins on 02/10! Every Thursday 6.30-8pm at the Kiosk Floreat Beach – Brazilian Music and the beach, the perfect combination, this year featuring Juliana Areias & Gus Potenza. This musical residency started in 2010 with So Brazil Duo and it has become a musical tradition in Perth since then.
