PERTH – Sat 24 Feb 2024 – Juliana Areias – COLOURFUL MAGIC – between Marina Lima & Loro bardot @ The Ellington Jazz Club 7pm – BOOK NOW
“Summer is on, a warmth in the heart, this colourful magic, is part of life”.
Award-winning Brazilian singer/songwriter – Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, invites you to celebrate a rainbow of rhythms featuring the hits of Brazilian 80-90’s pop star Marina Lima, as well as the alluring voice and compositions of Loro Bardot, Brazilian movie-star and singer/songwriter who is currently in Perth.
Part of Marina Lima’s lasting impact on the Brazilian Music scene was to be one of the first pop artists to declare and sing about being non-heterosexual, paving the way for contemporary artists like Loro Bardot. Both of them had their voices showcased as opening themes of major television shows in Brazil and are prominent artists of their generations, with their songs well-loved both inside and outside the LGBTQ+ community.
The Colourful Magic concert will present some of the most iconic songs from Marina Lima’s brilliant repertoire, including “Fullgas”, “Uma noite e meia”, “A Francesa”; as well as an exclusive selection of songs by Loro Bardot. Stand by also to learn a little of the history and interesting stories behind these songs.
For this exceptional concert, Juliana Areias is thrilled to share the stage with the amazing musicians of her Bossa Nova Baby band: Paul Millard (sax/flute), Tommi Flamenco (bass), Francisco Munõz (drums), Rafael Medeiros de Souza (percussion); this time, also featuring Loro Bardot playing piano for the entire night.
Come and discover or rediscover these irresistible tunes and experience Juliana’s “pop” side as she connects with these legendary artists.
Loro Bardot began their musical career at the age of 18 with the release of his first EP “Café dos Pássaros” (Bird Cafe). Despite having started out in music, they hold a bachelor’s degree in Performing Arts from ESCH, and their intelligence is focused on physical theater and soundtrack production. In 2015, Loro acted in “Ramp”, an English play directed by Scottish director Shona Cowie about the occupation of public schools in São Paulo. Loro is best known for singing the opening song for the TV series “Assédio” (Globo, 2019) and being featured in GQ magazine as one of the rising voices of 2019, alongside other artists such as Duda Beat, Jaloo, and MC Tha. In May 2021, they released the EP “Sessões de Quarentena” (Quarantine Sessions), which addressed themes such as desire, death, and the passage of time. In 2023, Bardot made their debut in the film industry in the movie LEVANTE (Power Alley), in which they starred alongside actress Ayomi Domenica. This multi-award winning film was nominated for best movie at Cannes Film Festival Critics Week, and also won the Fipresci prize at Cannes.
Juliana Areias has performed on major stages internationally including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro. Dubbed the “Bossa Nova Baby” by iconic Brazilian journalist Ruy Castro, her original album “Bossa Nova Baby” won “Best Brazilian Album” at the US Focus Brazil Awards in 2019 and spent five weeks in the US Top 100 Jazz Charts. Juliana has also been nominated five times for Western Australian Music Awards including Best World Music Act and Best Song.

Thank you everyone for coming to our last concert of the year – Juliana Areias – SAMBA JAZZ – Leny Andrade on Saturday 16 December 2023. It was a night full of emotions and mysteries.
We were on stage in Perth, Western Australia, the most isolated capital of the world, performing this song “O negócio é amar” (What matters is to love), composed by Carlos Lyra & Dolores Duran, as recorded by Leny Andrade, when in Brazil came the news of the death of its composer Carlinhos Lyra.
To introduce the song, I was telling to the public, its origin story, which I learned from Leny: Dolores Duran wrote the lyrics and after her death, Carlinhos Lyra, who knew it, made the song. Dolores was Leny’s true diva, as Leny is my true diva. This beautiful line of continuity happening on stage without us knowing that Lyra was in that moment joining them on the musical constellation of the sky.
Lyra was considered by Antonio Carlos Jobim, the greatest melodist of Brazil. In the beginning of December, Lyra, 90 years old, just released his latest and last album called “AFETO” (Affection) featuring a stellar lineup of artists recording his compositions: Gilberto Gil, Joyce Moreno, Ivan Lins, Edu Lobo, Wanda Sá, Fernanda Abreu, Mônica Salmaso, Lulu Santos, Marcos Valle, Paula Morelenbaum, Roberto Menescal, Caetano Veloso, Patrícia Alví, Leila Pinheiro, Mart’nália, Ney Matogrosso and Djavan. Arranged by João Donato, Marcos Valle, Gilson Peranzzetta, Antônio Adolfo, Leila Pinheiro and Jaques Morelenbaum.
Rest in peace and rest in music Lyra, Leny, Joao Donato, Doris Monteiro and Tony Bennett – all great artists who left us in 2023.
Life, death, love, music, feelings… all flowing continuously in the space, time and universe.
As the song says what matters is to love.

PERTH Sat 16 Dec 2023 – Juliana Areias – Samba Jazz – Leny Andrade @ The Ellington Jazz Club 7pm – BOOK NOW
Award winning Brazilian singer-songwriter – Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, invites you to finish the year in the grooviest mode, celebrating the music and life of the greatest lady of Brazilian Samba-Jazz: Leny Andrade.
Described by Tony Bennett as the “Ella Fitzgerald of Brazil”, Leny spent her career touring the world and living between her home town of Rio de Janeiro, New York and Mexico. Tony used to often come to watch Leny’s concerts and he loved to make live drawings of her while she was performing. Tony Bennet and Leny Andrade were together in music, friendship and life, to the point of leaving us only a few days apart, on the 21st and 24th of July 2023 respectively.
For the The New York Times Andrade was both the Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald of bossa nova …”her voice seems to contain the body and soul of Brazil.”
Leny Andrade’s impeccable sense of rhythm, signature scats, rich low vocals, and majestic presence has gained the respect and admiration of generations. Indeed, Leny is the singer who Juliana Areias most saw live since her teenage years, and is Areias’s greatest inspiration to become a singer herself.
The concert will feature some of the most iconic songs and arrangements from Leny’s repertoire, featuring composers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ivan Lins, Djavan, Chico Buarque, Gonzaquinha, Moacyr Luz, Aldir Blanc, Dolores Duran, Carlos Lyra, Durval Ferreira, Mauricio Einhorn… as well as the very first bolero Leny learned in Spanish “Si me enamoro” by Sergio Mianovich, and some of the delicious stories she used to tell on stage which Juliana Areias still remembers by heart.
Juliana Areias is honoured to share the stage once more with the amazing musicians of her Bossa Nova Baby band: Joshua de Silva (seven string guitar), Paul Millard (sax/flute), Tommi Flamenco (bass), Bronton Ainsworth (drums), Rafael Medeiros de Souza (percussion); and special guest singer-songwriter Loro Bardot. This will be the last opportunity to enjoy Juliana Areias and Joshua de Silva performing together and a celebration of all the beautiful musicianship they have created during six years of collaboration.

Award-winning Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, known as the “Bossa Nova Baby,” invites you to dance and celebrate the incredible music, life, and irreverent free spirit of Rita Lee. Rita Lee was a Brazilian superstar singer-songwriter with a career spanning over 50 years, who unfortunately passed away from cancer on May 8, 2023, at the age of 75.
Rita Lee’s eclectic music combines sunny Latin jazz rhythms with psychedelic guitars, smooth bossa-like vocals, and a witty mix of romantic, feminist, and transgressive ideas – all delivered with an elegance rarely found in pop music.
Having sold over 60 million albums worldwide, Rita Lee is considered the greatest musical exponent of São Paulo, Latin America’s largest city with a population exceeding 20 million. Both Rita Lee and Juliana Areias were born and raised in São Paulo, close to Paulista Avenue. The very first song Juliana Areias ever sung in public was a Rita Lee song, the same one that Prince Charles of England (now King) declared as his favorite song of all time. Bossa Nova creator João Gilberto also recorded with Rita Lee, and every iconic Brazilian recording artist since the 60s has performed her tunes. For decades, Rita Lee sang about the beauty of women’s freedom of expression, sexuality, pleasures, desires, and aspirations – well before Madonna and Lady Gaga hit the scene.
The concert will feature selections from Rita Lee’s greatest hits, including the infectious “Lanca Perfume” (Perfume Spray – King Charles’s favorite tune), “Ovelha Negra” (Black Sheep), “Doce Vampiro” (Sweet Vampire), “Mutante” (Changeable), “Nem Lixo, nem Lixo” (Neither Luxury nor Rubbish), as well as a few of her Beatles arrangements and collaborations with other major Brazilian composers and singers such as Cazuza, Zelia Duncan, Ed Motta, and Paulo Coelho (bestselling author of The Alchemist).
Juliana Areias is excited to share the stage with the grooviest cats in town: Paul Millard on sax/flute, Joshua de Silva on seven-string and hybrid guitars, Rafael Medeiro de Souza on percussion, and Joel de Silva on drums.
Come and discover or rediscover these irresistible tunes and perhaps experience Juliana’s own “psychedelic” side as she connects with the legendary intensity of the singular Rita Lee.

Award-winning Brazilian singer Juliana Areias and her Bossa Nova Baby Band invites you to celebrate the music of Elis Regina – Brazil’s most loved voice.
Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) would not be the same if Elis Regina hadn’t discovered and given voice to so many new composers. She was among the first mainstream artist to champion the works of an up-and-coming generation of Brazilian songwriters, including many that had their songs censored by the Brazilian Military Dictatorship – Edu Lobo, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, João Bosco, Ivan Lins, Joyce, Rita Lee. Elis’s rendition of João Bosco and Aldir Blanc’s “O Bêbado e o Equilibrista,” became the anthem of Brazil’s political amnesty movement, as the days of the junta drew to a close in 1984. At the same time, she was probably the finest-and most loyal interpreter of the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Bossa Nova’s most defining composer, immortalising many of his songs including “Waters of March”.
Elis Regina signed her first recording contract at the age of fifteen at her hometown of Porto Alegre, in South Brazil, and by 1965 had relocated to Rio and taken Brazil and the world by storm, with triumphant performances such as her Montreux Jazz Festival Concert 1979, TV shows and 30 albums released included the iconic “Elis & Tom”, with Antonio Calos Jobim.
It has been 41 years since Elis tragically died in 1982 of an overdose – mother of three and aged only 36. Yet the beauty of her work keeps inspiring the following generations, including her children; music producer João Marcello Boscolli and singers Pedro Mariano and Maria Rita.
To honour and celebrate Elis’ music and life, Juliana Areias is excited to share the stage with her Bossa Nova Baby Band, comprising the grooviest cats in town; Paul Millard – sax/flute, Joshua de Silva – seven string hybrid guitar, Bronton Ainsworth – drums, and percussionist Rafael Medeiro de Souza.
