This vibrant concert  will embrace Brazil’s most evocative rhythms and fusions – bossa, samba, baiao, choro, maracatu, Afro-samba, samba-jazz, samba-funk, samba-rock and samba-reggae featuring some of the finest Brazilian songs of all times. From fresh arrangements of bossa classics such as The Girl from Ipanema, One note Samba, So Nice (Summer Samba) and Mas que nada to some of the most iconic songs of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), as well as a few tunes from Juliana Areias’s award-winning album Bossa Nova Baby – the Summer Samba Concert  will make your heart beat stronger and your imagination fly high.

Last Concerts of the Year

Tomorrow Sat 11 Dec it will be our last concert of the year at the Ellington Jazz Club. And what a year! We have literally produced over 20 completely different concerts, to be able to present to you a different theme every month at the Ellington plus countless performances at Cottesloe & Scarborogh Beaches, at the Perth Festival and so many other events, performing for thousands of people during the whole year in just one city due to covid restrictions. Thank you all for being part of it! Thank you to my amazing Bossa Nova Baby Band members Joshua de Silva, Paul Millard, Rafael Medeiros de Souza, Bronton Ainsworth, Filipe Rimis and all our special guest artists and friends… Thanks to the Ellington Jazz Club for being our main stage in town for already 12 years! Brazilian singer Juliana Areias accompanied by her quartet and Sandance were the artists chosen to perform at the VIP Launch of Indigo Oscar – in Cottesloe, at the Indiana Tea House, the most iconic beachfront and postcard of Perth. This spot that used to be the dancing ballroom of Perth’s Society in the 1930’s is back and full of life and glamour with the new colours, flavours and sounds of Brazil! The Oceano Yemanja Concert will feature songs about the seven seas of Yemanja, iconic beaches, mythic creatures, lost treasures and magic tales of Neptune, Poseidon, sirens, mermaids, pirates, fish-men, African ships and Atlantis’s mysteries.

Dive into Brazil’s most evocative rhythms  – bossa, samba, baiao, afoxe, maracatu, and samba-jazz fusions – featuring fresh arrangement of classics such as “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Beyond the Sea” (“La Mer”) as well as alluring songs by iconic Brazilian artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Djavan, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Alceu Valença, Tim Maia, Maria Gadu, Marina, Lenine, Lulu Santos, Marisa Montes, Ceu, Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo.

The concert will also reference Christiane Anu’s iconic rendition of Warumpi Band’s Australian song “My Island Home” and UK artists who influenced Juliana Areias when she lived in Europe during the 90’s – David Byrne’s record with Caetano Veloso “Dreamworld – Red Hot” (1998) and Smoke City’s record “Underwater Love” (1997) – as well as Madonna’s 1989 hit “Cherish” which includes a line from 1966 “Cherish” by California band “The Association”.

Perth’s own award-winning Brazilian singer-songwriter, Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”, invites you celebrate 2021 Spring on a high note with the exuberant and colourful rhythms of her “Flor de Maracuja” – The Passion Flower Concert.

“Flor de Maracuja” will feature the exotic and irresistible music of Joao Donato, precursor of Bossa Nova and creator of Sambolero (a fusion of Brazilian Samba with Cuban & Mexican Bolero). You will be inspired to sway all the way during this magic night of Brazilian, Latin and Jazz Fusions.

To experience Donato’s music is to drink an elixir of happiness . You will feel enchanted by Donato’s fresh compositions such as his baiao/forro  “Flor de Maracuja” (The Passion Fruit Flower), his funky “A Ra” (The Frog)  and his iconic bossa “A Paz” (The Peace).  “A Paz” was co-composed with Gilberto Gil, and reflects on the human paradox of only being able to truly appreciate beauty and peace after suffering pain, war or challenging times.

Grammy Award winner Joao Donato (86 years old in 2020) has been performing, arranging and composing for the past 70 years. He started his musical career in the 1940s as a teenage accordionist and pianist. He composed “Minha Saudade” with Joao Gilberto and inspired Gilberto to create Bossa Nova. He also composed and recorded iconic contemporary songs with Sergio Mendes, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Marisa Montes, Arnaldo Antunes, Carlinhos Brown, Tito Puentes, Astrud Gilberto, Bebel Gilberto, Gal Costa, Zizi Possi, Joyce, Joao Bosco, Emilio Santiago, Lisa Ono to name just a few. His “Sambolero” album won the Latin Grammy Award for best Latin Jazz Album in 2010 and  his “Donato Eletrico” album was nominated for the Latin Grammy Best Instrumental Album of 2016.  Rolling Stone magazine named two of his albums as the Best Brazilian album of 2016 and 2017.

Roll-up for an entrancing night of rhythms, sultry songs and evocative stories from the country of bossa nova, samba and carnival, with Perth’s own award winning Brazilian singer-songwriter – Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby”.

Juliana Areias invites you to be seduced by the music of some of the most iconic Brazilian women composers of all time. Tune your senses and get to experience the true colours of Brazilian women’s love, passion, lust, loss, nature, instinct, intuition, power, motherhood, work, friendship and identity.

The Feminina Concert will celebrate what means to be a woman – the full spectrum of pleasures and challenges – according to the creative perspective of an amazing selection of Brazilian women songwriters: Joyce, Rosa Passos, Rita Lee, Marina, Marisa Montes, Ceu, Maria Gadu, Adriana Calcanhoto, Ana Carolina, Luedji Luna, Fatima Guedes, Zelia Duncan,  Maria Luiza Jobim, Vanessa Moreno, Vanessa da Mata, Teresa Cristina, Alcione, Chiquinha Gonzaga, Ivone Lara, Dolores Duran and Ale Kali. All of them are inspirations for Juliana Areias.
This concert will happen in the week of the 174th birthday of  the virtuoso, prolific and daring pianist Chiquinha Gonzaga, Brazil’s first woman conductor and successful composer who had her first musical hit in 1877 – a song called “Atraente” (attractive) in a polca-choro style. Also from Chiquinha Gonzaga comes the very first Carnival March Samba called “O, Abre Alas” (Please give way) released for the Carnival of 1899 and sung every Carnival parade in Brazil ever since. Chiquinha certainly pathed the way for every other Brazilian woman composer, including Rita Lee, Brazil’s queen of Rock, who recorded many songs with Joao Gilberto – the father of Bossa Nova. Rita and Joao, both pivotal musical influences for Juliana Areias as an artist.

This blazing concert will also showcase the sensational talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth. Perth Jazz Society invites Juliana Areias to present a full concert of original songs from her acclaimed “Bossa Nova Baby” album – fresh from the USA Top 100 Jazz Charts of 2020 – as well as to provide a hint of the new compositions she is cooking up for her next album in 2022. Dubbed  the “Bossa Nova Baby”, this year Juliana Areias will reach the milestone of 25 years living and performing outside Brazil. Juliana Areias’s original compositions explore her artistic journey – from her birth country of Brazil, where she grew up and was personally introduced to the masters of Bossa Nova, until today living in Perth, where she settled in 2007. During 2021, unable to tour nationally and internationally due to covid restrictions, she has performed a series of emblematic concerts at The Ellington Jazz Club, North Cottesloe Beach, Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre, Perth Festival, and as a soloist with The Perth Symphony Orchestra at the 2021 Western Australian of The Year Awards. All these experiences have inspired her new songs.

Juliana Areias is extremely proud and enthusiastic about the quality of the WA arts scene and is always honoured to share the stage with the groovy cats of her “Bossa Nova Baby Band”, featuring a blazing line-up of sensational musicians, and showcasing the amazing talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth: Paul Millard – sax/flute, Joshua de Silva – seven string hybrid guitars, Bronton Ainsworth – drums, and Brazilian percussionist Rafael Medeiro de Souza.

Juliana Areias has performed on major stages internationally including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro.

October brings two very special concerts at the Ellington Jazz CLub celebrating original music inspirations and Brazilian women composers!

Both concerts are connected in terms of what inspires me and who inspires me to dedicate my life to Brazilian music… If you would like to travel with us in the whole spectrum of this musical journey and get ready for a double dose of  Juliana Areias & The Bossa Nova Baby band. We would love to share it all with you!

What inspires you? Perth Jazz Society invites Juliana Areias to perform her own compositions inspired by the beach sands from Ipanema & Itapua to Takapuna, Scarborough & Cottesloe. One night only Wed 13 Oct 2021.

Areias means beach sands in Portuguese, the language of Brazil, bossa nova and samba. Let’s catch the wave of inspiration with Juliana Areias, presenting the songs of her acclaimed Bossa Nova Baby album and a hint of the new compositions she is cooking up for her next album in 2022.

The Feminina Concert will celebrate what means to be a woman – the pleasures and challenges – according to the creative perspective of an amazing selection of Brazilian women songwriters: Joyce, Rosa Passos, Rita Lee, Marina, Marisa Montes, Ceu, Maria Gadu, Adriana Calcanhoto, Ana Carolina, Luedji Luna, Fatima Guedes, Zelia Duncan, Maria Luiza Jobim, Vanessa Moreno, Vanessa da Mata, Teresa Cristina, Alcione, Chiquinha Gonzaga, Ivone Lara, Dolores Duran and Ale Kali. All of them are inspirations for Juliana Areias.

This concert will happen in the week of the 174th birthday of the virtuoso, prolific and daring pianist Chiquinha Gonzaga, Brazil’s first woman conductor and successful composer who had her first musical hit in 1877 – a song called “Atraente” (attractive) in a polca-choro style. Also from Chiquinha Gonzaga comes the very first Carnival March Samba called “O, Abre Alas” (Please give way) released for the Carnival of 1899 and sung every Carnival parade in Brazil ever since. Chiquinha certainly pathed the way for every other Brazilian woman composer, including Rita Lee, Brazil’s queen of Rock, who recorded many songs with Joao Gilberto – the father of Bossa Nova. Rita and Joao, both pivotal musical influences for Juliana Areias as an artist.
