Brazilian singer based in Perth, with over a year of sold out concerts around Australia, launches album to the World.
“Ned Kelly & Maria Bonita” dancing together in our tableau vivant*… symbolising Australian and Brazilian cultures connecting and our statement of art rather than violence.
Maria Bonita has multiple and complex meanings to me. She embodies the paradigm of what it is to be a woman and the challenges faced only by women.
Like Ned, Maria Bonita was a bushranger captured and killed by the police. Her head was cut off and exhibited as trophy, along with the heads of her whole band, lead by her partner Virgulino Lampiao. But Maria Bonita’s body was the only one violated with a stick into her vagina. Why? Because she was a daring and powerful woman. Therefore, her dead body “deserved” extra humiliation and punishment.
I particularly thought about Maria Bonita this week for two very different reasons:
1. A male anaesthetist in Brazil was recently caught in the act of raping his patient, who was there to give birth to her baby by Caesarian. It shows that the potential for violence against women has no limit and that not much has changed since Maria Bonita’s time. A shocking reality all too close to Almodovar’s surreal film “Talk to her” – one that keeps happening every day.
2. This week is my mother’s birthday. She was initially cast to play the role of Maria Bonita in Globo TV’s first mini series in 1982, but ended up losing the role to Tania Alves – an already well known theatre actor-singer. Despite all the challenges and prejudices she faced, my mother – who has schizophrenia – has raised three kids with very little help. Thank you Mamae, happy birthday to you! Thanks to you here we are!
Every year during winter in Brazil we have our Folk Festival where we celebrate the culture, music and food of Brazil’s northeastern outback, where Maria Bonita came from. A version of this special Folk Festival will be happening in Perth this Sat 16 July at the Mess Hall – The BrazilWA July Fest. I will be there singing as a special guest and paying my respect as a woman and artist to Maria Bonita, my mother and to all women facing unique challenges every day.
Brazil WA – The Brazilian Association of Western Australia Inc, was founded on International Women’s day over 10 years ago, by four daring women: Eliane, Cema, Ester and myself. Thank you to all presidents and members for keeping it alive- Eliane, Wilson, Carlos, Cema and Raquel. Thank you also to Carina, Giba, Roberta, Patricia, Fred, Pinguim for being part of it since the very beginning and the Bamboo Production team for helping BrazilWA to keep producing the Brazilian Winter Festival every year – the main event of the association calendar since its foundation.
Thank you Brazil WA, Bamboo Productions and WTD band for making this event happen and for the invitation. More info at www.julianaareias.com and at the link below.
May we all keep learning how to dance together… More culture and art instead of violence always.
*”Ned Kelly and Maria Bonita” – Tableau Vivant by Geoffrey Drake-Brockman and Juliana Areias
I love the ocean, I love the trees I love the sky, because of him We go for walks and talks along the beach The sun sets into the sea, he goes for a dip It has been 9 years since we first kissed
In a solstice night, we planted our seeds At Grace Busssell’s chair I seat to read Henrietta’s words of the wide open road We hug in the mornings, we share our dreams We catch the waves, we open the windows
It has been 9 years since we first kissed
Happy anniversary Meu Amor… Te amo…
Juliana Areias for Geoffrey Drake-Brockman Perth, 21 June 2022.
Viva João Gilberto! 90 years since he was born. Without Joao, the song “Chega de Saudade”, could be a lost samba cancao that Jobim & Vinicius forgot in a drawer. We are glad they met, and it became the very first Bossa Nova song ever recorded in 1958! Here is our sweet tribute to João, who keeps influencing new generations around the globe with his voice and guitar.
Now that the pandemic is starting to be under control, we with our Bossa Nova Baby Band hope that we can start to tour again around Australia, Brazil, USA, New Zealand, Japan, Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa… anywhere our music and tributes can be appreciated. Award-winning Brazilian singer-songwriter – Juliana Areias, the “Bossa Nova Baby” – presents a blazing show to warm your winter and light a bonfire of the heart. Juliana invites you on a musical passage on the train of colours, precious gems, and songs from the Interior of Brazil. On this journey you’ll discover the beautiful horizons and sounds from the diverse inland of Brazil: its baroque mining cities in Minas Gerais State; the broad farmlands of Southern Brazil, rainforests of Pantanal, modern architecture in the capital Brasilia, the tropical expanse of the Amazon, and the folk bonfire festivals from the north-eastern dry areas where the rhythm of Baiao and the popular Quadrilha and Forro dance originate.
This eclectic concert will embrace some of South America’s most evocative rhythms – samba, baiao, carimbo, maracatu, guarania, folkpop – spanning traditional and contemporary composers and interpreters such as: Antonio Carlos Jobim (bossa-nova and beyond), Ary Barroso (composer of Brazil), Luiz Gonzaga (the king of Baiao), Joao Bosco, Djavan, Lenine, Joao Donato, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, Beto Guedes, Lo Borges, Fatima Guedes, Flavio Venturini, Roupa Nova, 14 Bis, Maria Rita, Maria Gadu, Diana Pequeno, Gal Costa, Toninho Horta, Wagner Tiso, Ronaldo Bastos, Fernando Brant, Dorival Caymmy,… as well as few songs from Juliana Areias’s award-winning album “Bossa Nova Baby”.

Dubbed the “Bossa Nova Baby” by iconic Brazilian journalist Ruy Castro, Juliana’s original album “Bossa Nova Baby” won “Best Brazilian Album” at the US Focus Brazil Awards in 2019 and spent five weeks in the US Top 100 Jazz Charts. Now it is your turn to feel spellbound by the Bossa Nova Baby, Juliana Areias.
– “The toast of the Perth Jazz Scene. The release of Bossa Nova Baby has elevated her above a mere covers singer or bossa specialist. The singer excels in an elegant co-composed duet (Belas Artes) with Australia’s finest Brazilian-oriented 7-string guitarist, Doug de Vries”.– The Australian – Tony Hillier
– “It’s bossa that plays soccer with Jazz – as it has since the 60’s – and scoring a goal. Bossa Nova Baby” is a welcome surprise of great Brazilian music, made far away.” – O GLOBO– Brazil– Antonio Carlos Miguel – Music critic and judge member of the Latin Grammy Award.
– “The idea of mixing styles and cultures is reflected in Areias’ life and her music” – Daily Record, USA – Bill Nutt
Award-winning Brazilian singer Juliana Areias and her Bossa Nova Baby Band invites you to celebrate the music of Elis Regina – Brazil’s most loved voice.
Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) would not be the same if Elis Regina hadn’t discovered and given voice to so many new composers. She was among the first mainstream artist to champion the works of an up-and-coming generation of Brazilian songwriters, including many that had their songs censored by the Brazilian Military Dictatorship – Edu Lobo, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, João Bosco, Ivan Lins, Joyce, Rita Lee. Elis’s rendition of João Bosco and Aldir Blanc’s “O Bêbado e o Equilibrista,” became the anthem of Brazil’s political amnesty movement, as the days of the junta drew to a close in 1984. At the same time, she was probably the finest-and most loyal interpreter of the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Bossa Nova’s most defining composer, immortalising many of his songs including “Waters of March”.
Elis Regina signed her first recording contract at the age of fifteen at her hometown of Porto Alegre, in South Brazil, and by 1965 had relocated to Rio and taken Brazil and the world by storm, with triumphant performances such as her Montreux Jazz Festival Concert 1979, TV shows and 30 albums released included the iconic “Elis & Tom”, with Antonio Calos Jobim.
It has been 40 years since Elis tragically died in 1982 of an overdose – mother of three and aged only 36. Yet the beauty of her work keeps inspiring the following generations, including her children; music producer João Marcello Boscolli and singers Pedro Mariano and Maria Rita.
To honour and celebrate Elis’ music and life, Juliana Areias is excited to share the stage with her Bossa Nova Baby Band, comprising the grooviest cats in town; Paul Millard – sax/flute, Joshua de Silva – seven string hybrid guitar, Bronton Ainsworth – drums, and percussionist Rafael Medeiro de Souza.

Whatever comes, let it come
(Lyrics translation)
I will unleash the horses I will rest in the grass I will steal the show I will smile broadly No reins to pull No rules to follow No pain or sorrow With no error in my dance Whatever comes, let it come
All is colorful Even black and white When I paint, it’s beautiful And what I draw is honest Be it straight or curved Be it a sphere or a line Life is always right And I do not fear mine Whatever comes, let it come
Whether black or white I do not fear life Nor its counterpoint Whatever comes, let it come

“Tupi or not Tupi? That is the question” that was made by Brazilian modernist author Oswald de Andrade at his “Antropophagite Manifest” in 1928. This week marks the centenary of the 1922 “Modern Art Week of São Paulo”, when artists with “vanguard aspirations” such as Oswald de Andrade and composer Heitor Villas-Lobos got together to think and discuss how Brazilian culture and the arts should not only value European Aesthetics but should reflect its own unique mixture of elements. This capacity of absorbing outside influences and at the same time mixing it with its own strong roots giving back to the world something new, is still what for me makes Brazilian Culture and Arts extraordinary. (In fact, I believe the mixture is what makes any culture richer, this is what we are also creating in Australia).
The Centenary of the Modernist Week of São Paulo, has been provoking a huge discussion and opportunity for Brazil to review these ideas and think about its cultural identity again. A lot of criticisms have been made about how relevant and at the vanguard the week truly was in its own time. Although it is great to try to review its history and context, it is clear that it is still very relevant 100 years on, otherwise nobody would be writing about it now.
In my art practice particularly, modernist ideas have been always pivotal as you can see by some of the projects I was already involved with in Switzerland in late 1998 and how these values are still present in my projects in Australia including my concert at the Western Australia Art Gallery in 2013 and my most recent collaborations with the Perth Symphony Oschestra in 2021 and this weekend with the West Coast Philharmonic Orchestra celebrating First Nation and all immigrants contributions to this place we love to call home. Tupi or not Tupi, that is still the question.
*Tupi Guarani was the main spoken indigenous language in Brazil before the arrival of the Portuguese colonisers.
