Last Saturday marked a significant day for me, as it was not only International Women’s Day but also the first time I voted as an Australian citizen. Additionally, it marked the completion of my first two weeks as a full-time Bachelor of Arts student at UWA. Reflecting on the significance of these milestones together, I’ve realised just how much we take for granted the ability to vote or ride our bikes as women. These freedoms were hard-won by suffragettes during the first wave of the feminist movement (1850-1920). Before their efforts, it was considered inappropriate for women to ride a bike or vote. Thank you, suffragettes! While much still needs to be done in terms of achieving global equity for all genders, your contributions were pivotal in advancing these rights.
