Fri 20 Sep – back in Perth – Juliana Areias – JOBIM FOREVER concert, 6.30pm at The Ellington Jazz Club, featuring a new band member, Cuban pianist Moha Michek – BOOK NOW

Spring brings award-winning Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias, the Bossa Nova Baby, with her new band to present a magical tribute to her favourite composer and bossa nova master; Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the iconic album Getz/Gilberto, the 50th anniversary of Elis & Tom album, and remembering the 30th anniversary of Jobim’s death, the Jobim Forever concert will embrace timeless Jobim bossa classics – such as; The Girl from Ipanema, One Note Samba, Waters of March – which were introduced to the English-speaking world by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao & Astrud Gilberto, Stan Getz, Sergio Mendes, Charlie Byrd, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau and Esperanza Spalding; – as well as other breathtaking Jobim compositions that may sound new for the audience.
Juliana was personally introduced to the Bossa Nova founders when she was a teenager by the legendary Brazilian music historian and journalist Ruy Castro who also dubbed her “The Bossa Nova Baby”. This direct contact with the bossa masters inspired her to become a professional singer and songwriter. Juliana still vividly remembers the last time she saw Jobim’s live open air concert at Ibirapuera Park in Sao Paulo City, one year before his passing in 1994 and how his music has been influencing her and future generations globally ever since.
For this exceptionally special concert, Juliana Areias’s Bossa Nova Baby band will feature for the first time Cuban pianist Mohamed Michel and bassist Danny Moss Jr, as well as her long time music partners Paul Millard (sax-flute), Francisco Muñoz (drums) and Rafael Mendeiros de Souza (percussion). – showcasing the amazing talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth.
Juliana Areias has performed on major stages around the world including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro. Her original album “Bossa Nova Baby” won “Best Brazilian Album” at the US Focus Brazil Awards in 2019 and spent five weeks in the US Top 100 Jazz Charts. Juliana has also been nominated five times for Western Australian Music Awards including Best World Music Act and Best Song.
Now it is your turn to feel spellbound by the Bossa Nova Baby, Juliana Areias.
–“The idea of mixing styles and cultures is reflected in Areias’ life and her music.”, Daily Record – USA

–“We celebrate the changing face of Australian music with Brazilian-born, Perth based singer Juliana’s excellent, Bossa Nova-centred album.” – ABC Radio National

SUPPORTING PERTH’S NEW GENERATION TALENT AND CELEBRATING 15th YEARS OF THE ELLINGTON JAZZ CLUB – ELLINGTON 15 PHOTO EXHIBITION LAUNCH – 7 June 2024

This week, feeling a new wave of energy, after taking a pivotal decision and also after going out to appreciate the UNDENIABLE artistic talent of some incredible women I truly admire and their tremendous contribution to Perth’s superb arts scene.
Since Thursday discovering the original instrumental songs of CARLTON/FORSTER/PASS/VALENTI Quartet – via their beautiful live concert and album “UNDENIABLE”. Thank you Talya for this precious gift.
Yesterday at the opening of “Ellington 15 Exhibition: Fifteen Years of Jazz Photography” – Upstairs at The Ellington – curated by ANGELYNE WOLFE featuring the beautiful photographies of ANGELYNE Wolfe, Nathan Bullivant, Steven Emmerson, Ewa Ginal-Cumblidge, and Corey James. The free exhibition stays open until this Sunday night . You should come and see it.
Without Angelyne, the Ellington Jazz Club as we know it, would not have been created and succeed. Not only because thanks to her Graham Wood and Bernard Kong have met but also because her mark is in its every conceptual detail including its logo, its original website, posters and flyers and all her “behind the camera” work, literally helping to run the show.
Angelyne was also the photographer and graphic designer who did my album “Bossa Nova Baby” and who photographed its launch. It was extremely emotional to me to see that special night also represented in the exhibition as well as all the amazing moments captured of all my muso colleagues over these 15 years .
Thank you Angelyne for creating this exhibition and the Ellington itself and all your tremendous work for its success and its fine reputation. Thank you for celebrating and documenting The Ellington’s history and evolution – this place which is like home for all of us. Thank you.
Thank you as well for being there with me and for capturing these moments dear friend photographer Laura Casotti and Meu Amor Geoffrey Drake- Brockman.
